Abstract

At a quantum critical point, bipartite entanglement entropies have universal quantities which are subleading to the ubiquitous area law. For Renyi entropies, these terms are known to be similar to the von Neumann entropy, while being much more amenable to numerical and even experimental measurement. We show here that when calculating universal properties of Renyi entropies, it is important to account for unusual corrections to scaling that arise from relevant local operators present at the conical singularity in the multisheeted Riemann surface. These corrections grow in importance with increasing Renyi index. We present studies of Renyi correlation functions in the $1+1$ transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) using conformal field theory, mapping to free fermions, and series expansions, and the logarithmic entropy singularity at a corner in $2+1$ for both free bosonic field theory and the TFIM, using numerical linked cluster expansions. In all numerical studies, accurate results are only obtained when unusual corrections to scaling are taken into account. In the worst case, an analysis ignoring these corrections can get qualitatively incorrect answers, such as predicting a decrease in critical exponents with the Renyi index, when they are actually increasing. We discuss a two-step extrapolation procedure that can be used to account for the unusual corrections to scaling.

Thermodynamic singularities in the entanglement entropy at a two-dimensional quantum critical point

Rajiv R. P. Singh, Roger G. Melko, J. Oitmaa

We study the bipartite entanglement entropy of the 2D transverse-field Ising model in the thermodynamic limit. Series expansions are developed for the Renyi entropy around both the small-field and large-field limits, allowing the separate calculation of the entanglement associated with lines and corners at the boundary between subsystems. Series extrapolations are used to extract power laws and logarithmic singularities as the quantum critical point is approached, giving access to new universal quantities. In 1D, we find excellent agreement with exact results as well as quantum Monte Carlo simulations. In 2D, we find compelling evidence that the entanglement at a corner is significantly different from a free boson field theory. These results demonstrate the power of the series expansion method for calculating entanglement entropy in interacting systems, a fact that will be particularly useful in searches for exotic quantum criticality in models with and without the sign problem.

Entanglement at a Two-Dimensional Quantum Critical Point: A Numerical Linked-Cluster Expansion Study

Ann B. Kallin, Katharine Hyatt, Rajiv R. P. Singh +1 more

We develop a method to calculate the bipartite entanglement entropy of quantum models, in the thermodynamic limit, using a numerical linked-cluster expansion (NLCE) involving only rectangular clusters. It is based on exact diagonalization of all n×m rectangular clusters at the interface between entangled subsystems A and B. We use it to obtain the Renyi entanglement entropy of the two-dimensional transverse field Ising model, for arbitrary real Renyi index α. Extrapolating these results as a function of the order of the calculation, we obtain universal pieces of the entanglement entropy associated with lines and corners at the quantum critical point. They show NLCE to be one of the few methods capable of accurately calculating universal properties of arbitrary Renyi entropies at higher dimensional critical points.

Unusual Corrections to the Scaling of the Entanglement Entropy of the Excited states in Conformal Field Theory

Lorenzo Cevolani

In this paper we study the scaling of the correction of the Renyi entropy of the excited states in systems described, in the continuum limit, by a conformal field theory (CFT). These corrections scale as $L^{-\frac{2Δ}{n}}$, where $L$ is the system size and $Δ$ is the scaling dimension of a relevant bulk operator located around the singularities of the Riemann surface $\mathcal{R}_n$. Their name is due to their explicit dependence on the Riemann surface $\mathcal{R}_n$. Their presence has been detected in several works on the entanglement entropy in finite size systems, both in the ground and the excited states. Here, we present a general study of these corrections based on the perturbation expansion on $\mathcal{R}_n$. Some of the terms in this expansion are divergent and they will be cured with addition cut-offs. These cut-offs will determine how these corrections scale with the system size $L$. Exact numerical computations of the Renyi entropy of the excited states of the XX model are provided and they confirm our theoretical prediction on the scaling of corrections. They allow also a comparison with the other works present in the literature finding that the corrections, for the excited states, have the exact same form of the ones of the ground state case multiplied by a model dependend function of $n$ and $l/L$.

Criticality on Rényi Defects at (2+1)$D$ O(3) Quantum Critical Points

Yanzhang Zhu, Zhe Wang, Meng Cheng +1 more

At a quantum critical point, the universal scaling behavior of Rényi entanglement entropy is controlled by the universality class of the codimension-two Rényi (or conical) defects in the infrared theory. In this work we perform a systematic study of critical correlations along Rényi defect lines in (2+1)$D$ quantum spin models realizing quantum phase transitions described by the O(3) Wilson-Fisher universality class, using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We present numerical evidence that, for a fixed Rényi index $n$, there exist multiple Rényi defect universality classes, with distinct critical exponents for the O(3) order parameter on the defect. These universality classes are realized by choosing microscopically different entanglement cuts in lattice models, which we classify as ordinary, special and extraordinary according to their relation to surface criticality. For the extraordinary entanglement cut, we further find evidence for a phase transition on the defect as a function of the Rényi index. Our results highlight the key role of defect universality classes in determining the universal scaling of Rényi entropy, and provide a framework for understanding the previously observed dependence of Rényi entropy scaling on microscopic lattice details.

Scaling of Entanglement Entropy at Deconfined Quantum Criticality

Jiarui Zhao, Yan-Cheng Wang, Zheng Yan +2 more

We develop a nonequilibrium increment method to compute the Rényi entanglement entropy and investigate its scaling behavior at the deconfined critical (DQC) point via large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. To benchmark the method, we first show that, at a conformally invariant critical point of O(3) transition, the entanglement entropy exhibits universal scaling behavior of area law with logarithmic corner corrections, and the obtained correction exponent represents the current central charge of the critical theory. Then we move on to the deconfined quantum critical point, where we still observe similar scaling behavior, but with a very different exponent. Namely, the corner correction exponent is found to be negative. Such a negative exponent is in sharp contrast with the positivity condition of the Rényi entanglement entropy, which holds for unitary conformal field theories (CFTs). Our results unambiguously reveal fundamental differences between DQC and quantum critical points described by unitary CFTs.

Quantum critical universality and singular corner entanglement entropy of bilayer Heisenberg-Ising model

Trithep Devakul, Rajiv R. P. Singh

We consider a bilayer quantum spin model with anisotropic intralayer exchange couplings. By varying the anisotropy, the quantum critical phenomena changes from XY to Heisenberg to Ising universality class, with two modes, three modes, and one mode, respectively, becoming gapless simultaneously. We use series-expansion methods to calculate the second and third Renyi entanglement entropies when the system is bipartitioned into two parts. Leading area-law terms and subleading entropies associated with corners are separately calculated. We find clear evidence that the logarithmic singularity associated with the corners is universal in each class. Its coefficient along the Ising critical line is in excellent agreement with those obtained previously for the transverse-field Ising model. Our results provide strong evidence for the idea that the universal terms in the entanglement entropy provide an approximate measure of the low energy degrees of freedom in the system.
