Abstract

In this paper we study the scaling of the correction of the Renyi entropy of the excited states in systems described, in the continuum limit, by a conformal field theory (CFT). These corrections scale as $L^{-\frac{2Δ}{n}}$, where $L$ is the system size and $Δ$ is the scaling dimension of a relevant bulk operator located around the singularities of the Riemann surface $\mathcal{R}_n$. Their name is due to their explicit dependence on the Riemann surface $\mathcal{R}_n$. Their presence has been detected in several works on the entanglement entropy in finite size systems, both in the ground and the excited states. Here, we present a general study of these corrections based on the perturbation expansion on $\mathcal{R}_n$. Some of the terms in this expansion are divergent and they will be cured with addition cut-offs. These cut-offs will determine how these corrections scale with the system size $L$. Exact numerical computations of the Renyi entropy of the excited states of the XX model are provided and they confirm our theoretical prediction on the scaling of corrections. They allow also a comparison with the other works present in the literature finding that the corrections, for the excited states, have the exact same form of the ones of the ground state case multiplied by a model dependend function of $n$ and $l/L$.

Unusual corrections to scaling in entanglement entropy

John Cardy, Pasquale Calabrese

We present a general theory of the corrections to the asymptotic behaviour of the Renyi entropies which measure the entanglement of an interval A of length L with the rest of an infinite one-dimensional system, in the case when this is described by a conformal field theory of central charge c. These can be due to bulk irrelevant operators of scaling dimension x>2, in which case the leading corrections are of the expected form L^{-2(x-2)} for values of n close to 1. However for n>x/(x-2) corrections of the form L^{2-x-x/n} and L^{-2x/n} arise and dominate the conventional terms. We also point out that the last type of corrections can also occur with x less than 2. They arise from relevant operators induced by the conical space-time singularities necessary to describe the reduced density matrix. These agree with recent analytic and numerical results for quantum spin chains. We also compute the effect of marginally irrelevant bulk operators, which give a correction (log L)^{-2}, with a universal amplitude. We present analogous results for the case when the interval lies at the end of a semi-infinite system.

Unusual corrections to scaling and convergence of universal Renyi properties at quantum critical points

Sharmistha Sahoo, Edwin Miles Stoudenmire, Jean-Marie Stéphan +3 more

At a quantum critical point, bipartite entanglement entropies have universal quantities which are subleading to the ubiquitous area law. For Renyi entropies, these terms are known to be similar to the von Neumann entropy, while being much more amenable to numerical and even experimental measurement. We show here that when calculating universal properties of Renyi entropies, it is important to account for unusual corrections to scaling that arise from relevant local operators present at the conical singularity in the multisheeted Riemann surface. These corrections grow in importance with increasing Renyi index. We present studies of Renyi correlation functions in the $1+1$ transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) using conformal field theory, mapping to free fermions, and series expansions, and the logarithmic entropy singularity at a corner in $2+1$ for both free bosonic field theory and the TFIM, using numerical linked cluster expansions. In all numerical studies, accurate results are only obtained when unusual corrections to scaling are taken into account. In the worst case, an analysis ignoring these corrections can get qualitatively incorrect answers, such as predicting a decrease in critical exponents with the Renyi index, when they are actually increasing. We discuss a two-step extrapolation procedure that can be used to account for the unusual corrections to scaling.

Relevant perturbation of entanglement entropy of singular surfaces

Mostafa Ghasemi, Shahrokh Parvizi

We study the entanglement entropy of theories that are derived from relevant perturbation of given CFTs for regions with a singular boundary by using the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the smooth case, it is well known that a relevant deformation of the boundary theory by the relevant operator with scaling dimension $Δ=\frac{d+2}{2}$ generates a logarithmic universal term to the entanglement entropy. As the smooth case, when the boundary CFT deformed by a relevant operator, we find that the entanglement entropy of singular surface also contains a new logarithmic term which is due to relevant perturbation of the conformal field theory, and depends on the scaling dimension of relevant operator. We also find for extended singular surfaces, $c_{n}\times R^{m}$, as well as logarithmic term, the new universal double logarithmic terms may appear depending on the scaling dimension of relevant operator and spacetime dimensions. These new terms are due to relevant perturbation of the boundary theory.

Entanglement entropy of excited states in conformal perturbation theory and the Einstein equation

Antony J. Speranza

For a conformal field theory (CFT) deformed by a relevant operator, the entanglement entropy of a ball-shaped region may be computed as a perturbative expansion in the coupling. A similar perturbative expansion exists for excited states near the vacuum. Using these expansions, this work investigates the behavior of excited state entanglement entropies of small, ball-shaped regions. The motivation for these calculations is Jacobson’s recent work on the equivalence of the Einstein equation and the hypothesis of maximal vacuum entropy [ arXiv:1505.04753 ], which relies on a conjecture stating that the behavior of these entropies is sufficiently similar to a CFT. In addition to the expected type of terms which scale with the ball radius as R d , the entanglement entropy calculation gives rise to terms scaling as R 2Δ, where Δ is the dimension of the deforming operator. When $$ \varDelta \le \frac{d}{2} $$ , the latter terms dominate the former, and suggest that a modification to the conjecture is needed.

Finite-size corrections of the entanglement entropy of critical quantum chains

J. C. Xavier, Francisco Castilho Alcaraz

Using the density matrix renormalization group, we calculated the finite-size corrections of the entanglement $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-R\'enyi entropy of a single interval for several critical quantum chains. We considered models with $U(1)$ symmetry such as the spin-1/2 $XXZ$ and spin-1 Fateev-Zamolodchikov models, as well as models with discrete symmetries such as the Ising, the Blume-Capel, and the three-state Potts models. These corrections contain physically relevant information. Their amplitudes, which depend on the value of $\ensuremath{\alpha}$, are related to the dimensions of operators in the conformal field theory governing the long-distance correlations of the critical quantum chains. The obtained results together with earlier exact and numerical ones allow us to formulate some general conjectures about the operator responsible for the leading finite-size correction of the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-R\'enyi entropies. We conjecture that the exponent of the leading finite-size correction of the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-R\'enyi entropies is ${p}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}=2{X}_{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}/\ensuremath{\alpha}$ for $\ensuremath{\alpha}>1$ and ${p}_{1}=\ensuremath{\nu}$, where ${X}_{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}$ denotes the dimensions of the energy operator of the model and $\ensuremath{\nu}=2$ for all the models.

Entanglement entropy for descendent local operators in 2D CFTs

Bin Chen, Wu-zhong Guo, Song He +1 more

We mainly study the Rényi entropy and entanglement entropy of the states locally excited by the descendent operators in two dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs). In rational CFTs, we prove that the increase of entanglement entropy and Rényi entropy for a class of descendent operators, which are generated by $$ {\mathrm{\mathcal{L}}}^{\left(-\right)}{\overline{\mathrm{\mathcal{L}}}}^{\left(-\right)} $$ onto the primary operator, always coincide with the logarithmic of quantum dimension of the corresponding primary operator. That means the Rényi entropy and entanglement entropy for these descendent operators are the same as the ones of their corresponding primary operator. For 2D rational CFTs with a boundary, we confirm that the Rényi entropy always coincides with the logarithmic of quantum dimension of the primary operator during some periods of the evolution. Furthermore, we consider more general descendent operators generated by $$ {\displaystyle \sum {d}_{\left\{{n}_i\right\}\left\{{n}_j\right\}}\left({\displaystyle {\prod}_i{L}_{-}{{}_n}_{{}_i}{\displaystyle {\prod}_j{{\overline{L}}_{-n}}_{{}_j}}}\right)} $$ on the primary operator. For these operators, the entanglement entropy and Rényi entropy get additional corrections, as the mixing of holomorphic and anti-holomorphic Virasoro generators enhance the entanglement. Finally, we employ perturbative CFT techniques to evaluate the Rényi entropy of the excited operators in deformed CFT. The Rényi and entanglement entropies are increased, and get contributions not only from local excited operators but also from global deformation of the theory.
