Abstract

We analyze the coexisting ordered phases that arise in the half-filled [Formula: see text]-t-U-V extended Hubbard Model on the square lattice when tackled within the Kotliar and Ruckenstein slave boson representation in the thermodynamical limit. Particular emphasis is put on the dependence of the quasi-particle dispersions, the gaps, the spin-resolved renormalization factors, and the distribution of double occupancy on the microscopical parameters of the model. Our calculations are performed in a parameter range that is most suitable for resistive switching. In particular, the main contributions to the gaps are shown to either arise from [Formula: see text] in the weak coupling regime, or from U and V when they are the largest scales. The gaps are thus from joint spin and charge origin, and so are the order parameters.

Metal to Insulator Transition in the 2-D Hubbard Model: A Slave Boson Approach

Raymond Frésard, K. Doll

We use the Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave boson technique to treat the strong correlation of the Hubbard model. In a first part we discuss the metal to insulator transition that is occurring on the honeycomb lattice at half filling. We find the critical value for the interaction strength to be U/t=3.1. Above it a gap opens in the spectrum which behaves like (U-U_c) in the vicinity of the transition, and like U for strong coupling. In a second part we calculate the phase diagram of the Hubbard model on the square lattice at finite temperature. The Mermin-Wagner theorem is fulfilled in the largest part of the phase diagram. In the strong coupling regime, the uniform magnetic susceptibility shows a maximum in its doping dependence in agreement with numerical simulations.

Two-dimensional extended Hubbard model at half-filling

A. Sherman

Abstract We consider the extended Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice at half-filling. The model is investigated using the strong coupling diagram technique. We sum infinite series of ladder diagrams allowing for full-scale charge and spin fluctuations and the actual short-range antiferromagnetic order for nonzero temperatures. In agreement with earlier results, we find the first-order phase transition in the charge subsystem occurring at v = v c ≳ U/4 with v and U the intersite and on-site Coulomb repulsion constants. The transition reveals itself in an abrupt sign change of a sharp maximum in the zero-frequency charge susceptibility at the corner of the Brillouin. States arising at the transition have alternating deviations of electron occupations from the mean value on neighboring sites. Due to fluctuations, these alternating occupation deviations have short-range order. For the considered parameters, such behavior is found for U ≲ 5t with t the hopping constant. For the insulating case U ≳ 6t, in which the transition is not observed, we find a continuous growth of the Mott gap with v. The evolution of the electron density of states with increasing v is also considered.

Breakdown of charge homogeneity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model: Slave-boson study of magnetic order

Jannis Seufert, David Riegler, Michael Klett +2 more

We study the two-dimensional one-band Hubbard model on the square lattice through the spin rotation invariant Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson method, with an emphasis on the electron-doped regime. The phase diagram determined within mean field approximation reveals three different magnetically ordered phases separated by first-order transitions, and a wide instability region as indicated by a negative compressibility. We show that this conundrum of the unstable mean field domain is resolved by spatially mixed phases of neighboring stable states. We also find charge density wave type instabilities in the antiferromagnetically ordered (AFM) state at wave vectors commensurate with the doping. The corresponding charge and spin density response functions are calculated from a Gaussian fluctuations formalism about a magnetic saddle point, for which we provide a detailed derivation. Further, we present density and spin excitation spectra in the AFM phase, allowing for a quantitative calculation of the spin wave parameters, the gap in the longitudinal spin excitation spectrum, and the density excitations in the upper Hubbard band.

Phase diagram of the Hubbard model on a square lattice: A cluster slave-spin study

Minghuan Zeng, Tianxing Ma, Y.-J. Wang

The cluster slave-spin method is employed to investigate systematically the ground state properties of the Hubbard model on a square lattice with doping $\ensuremath{\delta}$ and coupling strength $U$ being its parameters. At half-filling, a relation between the staggered magnetization $M$ and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) gap ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{\text{AFM}}$ is established in the small $U$ limit to compare with that from the Hartree-Fock theory, and a first-order metal-insulator Mott transition in the paramagnetic state is substantiated, which is characterized by discontinuities and hystereses at ${U}_{\text{Mott}}=10t$. The interaction ${U}_{c}$ for the crossover in the AFM state, separating the weak- and strong-coupling regimes, is found to remain almost unchanged with large dopings, and smaller than ${U}_{\text{Mott}}$ at half-filling because of long range AFM correlations. Finally, an overall phase diagram in the $U\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\delta}$ plane is presented, which is composed of four regimes: the AFM insulator at half-filling, the AFM metal with the compressibility $\ensuremath{\kappa}>0$ or $\ensuremath{\kappa}<0$, and the paramagnetic metal, as well as three phase transitions: (i) From the AFM metal to the paramagnetic metal, (ii) between the AFM metal phases with positive and negative $\ensuremath{\kappa}$, and (iii) separating the AFM insulating phase at $\ensuremath{\delta}=0$ from the AFM metal phase for $\ensuremath{\delta}>0$.

Coexistence of the bond-order wave and antiferromagnetism in a two-dimensional half-filled Peierls-Hubbard model

Qingshan Yuan, Thilo Kopp

The two-dimensional Peierls-Hubbard model is studied at half filling within both Hartree-Fock and Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson theory. The interplay between two types of long-range order, bond-order wave (BOW) and antiferromagnetism (AFM), is analyzed for two representative dimerization patterns, corresponding both to the same wave vector $(\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi}).$ For each pattern, the Peierls dimerization (and associated BOW) is weakened and finally suppressed with increasing Hubbard on-site interaction, and correspondingly AFM is gradually enhanced. In particular, a coexistence regime with both BOW and AFM order is established in the parameter space of electron-lattice and Hubbard interactions.

Gapped spin-liquid states in a one-dimensional Hubbard model with antiferromagnetic exchange interaction

Jianhui Dai, Xiaoyong Feng, Tao Xiang +1 more

We study the phase diagram of a one-dimensional extended Hubbard model with antiferromagnetic exchange interaction analytically and numerically. The bosonization and transfer-matrix renormalization group methods are used in the corresponding coupling regimes. At half-filling, the system is a Mott insulator with a finite spin excitation gap if the on-site Coulomb repulsion is fairly smaller than the antiferromagnetic exchange $J$. This Mott insulator is characterized by the bond-charge-density-wave order or spontaneously dimerization. In the weak-coupling regime where the spin-charge separation holds approximately, the critical point separating the gapless and gapped spin liquid phases is ${U}_{c}\ensuremath{\sim}J∕2$. However, as $J$ increases, the spin-charge couplings become important and the critical point ${U}_{c}$ is significantly suppressed and eventually tends to zero as $J\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$. Away from half-filling, the charge gap completely collapses but the spin gap persists.
