Coexistence of the bond-order wave and antiferromagnetism in a two-dimensional half-filled Peierls-Hubbard model

Abstract

The two-dimensional Peierls-Hubbard model is studied at half filling within both Hartree-Fock and Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson theory. The interplay between two types of long-range order, bond-order wave (BOW) and antiferromagnetism (AFM), is analyzed for two representative dimerization patterns, corresponding both to the same wave vector $(\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi}).$ For each pattern, the Peierls dimerization (and associated BOW) is weakened and finally suppressed with increasing Hubbard on-site interaction, and correspondingly AFM is gradually enhanced. In particular, a coexistence regime with both BOW and AFM order is established in the parameter space of electron-lattice and Hubbard interactions.

Peierls instability in the two-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model

Sanyee Tang, J. E. Hirsch

We have studied the tendency of the two-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model towards dimerization as a function of the on-site repulsion U. We have found that the phonon with (\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi}) wave vector is the most favorable vibration mode when U is less than a critical value ${U}_{c}$, where ${U}_{c}$ is a function of the dimerization. When U is greater than ${U}_{c}$, the (\ensuremath{\pi},0) phonon becomes preferred. In leading order, the energy gain under dimerization appears to be proportional to ${\ensuremath{\delta}}^{2}$ln\ensuremath{\delta} if the (\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi}) phonon is favorable, so that the system displays a Peierls instability in this case. For large U the energy gain to leading order appears to be proportional to ${\ensuremath{\delta}}^{2}$ for both the (\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi}) and (\ensuremath{\pi},0) phonons, and the latter one is preferred; in that case the system is stable unless the electron-phonon coupling exceeds a critical value. Unlike the effect in the one-dimensional case, the on-site repulsion U seems to have essentially no effect on the tendency towards dimerization for small U, and suppresses it for large U. This difference may be related to the fact that there exists long-range antiferromagnetic order in the two-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model when U is present.

Evolution of Bond-Order-Wave Phase in One-Dimensional Mott Insulators

Huang Xiao-Xuan, Pan Zheng-Quan, Zhaoxin Xu +2 more

In this paper, by using the level spectroscopy method and bosonization theory, we discuss the evolution of the bond-order-wave (BOW) phase in a one-dimensional half-filled extended Hubbard model with the on-site Coulomb repulsion U as well as the inter-site Coulomb repulsion V and antiferromagnetic exchange J . After clarifying the generic phase diagrams in three limiting cases with one of the parameters being fixed at zero individually, we find that the BOW phase in the U-V phase diagram is initially enlarged as J increases from zero but is eventually suppressed as J increases further in the strong-coupling regime. A three-dimensional phase diagram is suggested where the BOW phase exists in an extended region separated from the spin-density-wave and charge-density-wave phases.

Antiferromagnetic and bond-order-wave phases in the half-filled two-dimensional optical Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard model

Andy Tanjaroon Ly, Benjamin Cohen-Stead, Steven Johnston

Electron-phonon ($e$-ph) interactions arise in many strongly correlated quantum materials from the modulation of the nearest-neighbor hopping integrals, as in the celebrated Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. Nevertheless, relatively few non-perturbative studies of correlated SSH models have been conducted in dimensions greater than one, and those that have been done have primarily focused on bond models, where generalized displacements independently modulate each hopping integral. We conducted a sign-problem free determinant quantum Monte Carlo study of the optical SSH-Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice, where site-centered phonon modes simultaneously modulate pairs of nearest-neighbor hopping integrals. We report the model's low-temperature phase diagram in the challenging adiabatic regime ($Ω/E_\mathrm{F} \sim 1/8$). It exhibits insulating antiferromagnetic Mott and bond-order-wave (BOW) phases with a narrow region of coexistence between them. We also find that a critical $e$-ph coupling is required to stabilize the BOW phase in the small $U$ limit. Lastly, in stark contrast to recent findings for the model's bond variant, we find no evidence for a long-range antiferromagnetism in the pure $(U/t=0)$ optical SSH model.

Phase coexistence in a half-filled extended Hubbard model

Loïc Philoxene, Vu Hung Dao, Raymond Frésard

We analyze the coexisting ordered phases that arise in the half-filled [Formula: see text]-t-U-V extended Hubbard Model on the square lattice when tackled within the Kotliar and Ruckenstein slave boson representation in the thermodynamical limit. Particular emphasis is put on the dependence of the quasi-particle dispersions, the gaps, the spin-resolved renormalization factors, and the distribution of double occupancy on the microscopical parameters of the model. Our calculations are performed in a parameter range that is most suitable for resistive switching. In particular, the main contributions to the gaps are shown to either arise from [Formula: see text] in the weak coupling regime, or from U and V when they are the largest scales. The gaps are thus from joint spin and charge origin, and so are the order parameters.

Phase diagram of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard model on a square lattice

Chunhan Feng, Bo Xing, Dario Poletti +2 more

The Hubbard and Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) Hamiltonians are iconic models for understanding the qualitative effects of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions, respectively. In the two-dimensional square lattice Hubbard model at half filling, the on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$ between up and down electrons induces antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and a Mott insulating phase. On the other hand, for the SSH model, there is an AFM phase when the electron-phonon coupling $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ is less than a critical value ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{c}$ and a bond order wave when $\ensuremath{\lambda}>{\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{c}$. In this Letter, we perform numerical studies on the square lattice optical Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard Hamiltonian, which combines both interactions. We use the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method which does not suffer from the fermionic sign problem at half filling. We map out the phase diagram and find that it exhibits a direct first-order transition between an antiferromagnetic phase and a bond-ordered wave as $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ increases. The AFM phase is characterized by two different regions. At smaller $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ the behavior is similar to that of the pure Hubbard model; the other region, while maintaining long-range AFM order, exhibits larger kinetic energies and double occupancy, i.e., larger quantum fluctuations, similar to the AFM phase found in the pure SSH model.

Breakdown of charge homogeneity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model: Slave-boson study of magnetic order

Jannis Seufert, David Riegler, Michael Klett +2 more

We study the two-dimensional one-band Hubbard model on the square lattice through the spin rotation invariant Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson method, with an emphasis on the electron-doped regime. The phase diagram determined within mean field approximation reveals three different magnetically ordered phases separated by first-order transitions, and a wide instability region as indicated by a negative compressibility. We show that this conundrum of the unstable mean field domain is resolved by spatially mixed phases of neighboring stable states. We also find charge density wave type instabilities in the antiferromagnetically ordered (AFM) state at wave vectors commensurate with the doping. The corresponding charge and spin density response functions are calculated from a Gaussian fluctuations formalism about a magnetic saddle point, for which we provide a detailed derivation. Further, we present density and spin excitation spectra in the AFM phase, allowing for a quantitative calculation of the spin wave parameters, the gap in the longitudinal spin excitation spectrum, and the density excitations in the upper Hubbard band.
