Abstract

Abstract This paper presents two methods for topological analysis of the complex Hermitian Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) model using the quantum geometric tensor: Berry phase and topological data analysis. We demonstrate how both methods can effectively generate topological phase diagrams for the model, revealing two distinct regions based on the relative magnitudes of the parameters | v | and | w | . Specifically, when | v | > | w | , the system is found to be topologically trivial, whereas for | v | < | w | , it exhibits topologically non-trivial behavior. Our results contribute to building the groundwork for topological analysis of more complicated SSH-type models.

-symmetry berry phases, topology and -symmetry breaking

Abstract We study the complex Berry phases in non-Hermitian systems with parity- and time-reversal   symmetry. We investigate a kind of two-level system with   symmetry. We find that the real part of the the complex Berry phases have two quantized values and they are equal to either 0 or π , which originates from the topology of the Hermitian eigenstates. We also find that if we change the relative parameters of the Hamiltonian from the unbroken-   -symmetry phase to the broken-   -symmetry phase, the imaginary part of the complex Berry phases are divergent at the exceptional points. We exhibit two concrete examples in this work, one is a two-level toys model, which has nontrivial Berry phases; the other is the generalized Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) model that has physical loss and gain in every sublattice. Our results explicitly demonstrate the relation between complex Berry phases, topology and   -symmetry breaking and enrich the field of the non-Hermitian physics.

Reduced density matrix and order parameters of a topological insulator

Wing Chi Yu, Yanchao Li, Pedro D Sacramento +1 more

It has been recently proposed that the reduced density matrix may be used to derive the order parameter of a condensed matter system. Here we propose order parameters for the phases of a topological insulator, specifically a spinless Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, and consider the effect of short-range interactions. All the derived order parameters and their possible corresponding quantum phases are verified by the entanglement entropy and electronic configuration analysis results. The order parameter appropriate to the topological regions is further proved by calculating the Berry phase under twisted boundary conditions. It is found that the topological nontrivial phase is robust to the introduction of repulsive intersite interactions and can appear in the topological trivial parameter region when appropriate interactions are added.

Anomalous dynamical response of non-Hermitian topological phases

Ritu Nehra, Dibyendu Roy

Composite topological phases with intriguing topology like M\"obius strips emerge in sublattice symmetric non-Hermitian systems due to spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry at some parameter regime. While these phases have been characterized by nonadiabatic complex geometric phases of multiple participating complex bands, the physical properties of these phases remain largely unknown. We explore the dynamical response of these phases by studying Loschmidt echo from an initial state of the Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, which is evolved by a non-Hermitian SSH Hamiltonian after a sudden quench in parameters. Topology-changing quenches display nonanalytical temporal behavior of return rates (logarithm of the Loschmidt echo) for the non-Hermitian SSH Hamiltonian in the trivial, M\"obius, and topological phase. Moreover, the dynamical topological order parameter appears only at one side of the Brillouin zone for the M\"obius phase case in contrast to both sides of the Brillouin zone for quench by the trivial and topological phase of the non-Hermitian SSH model. The last feature is a dynamical signature of different symmetry constraints on the real and imaginary parts of the complex bands in the M\"obius phase.

Topological phases and spontaneous symmetry breaking: the revenge of the original Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

Polina Matveeva, Dmitri B. Gutman, Sam T. Carr

We study the interplay of spontaneous symmetry breaking and topological properties in interacting one-dimensional models. We solve these models using bozonization and identify topologically non-trivial phases by counting the additional degeneracy (affiliated with the edge modes) of a finite-size system relative to the infinite one. We find even if the mean-field solution is topological, this may not be true when it arises from spontaneous symmetry breaking, including in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. This implies that the original SSH model, as presented by Su, Schrieffer, and Heeger, is topologically trivial, as opposed to its mean-field version. A spinful version, on the other hand, does exhibit a topologically non-trivial phase. In that state, both mean-field solutions are topologically non-trivial and correspond to non-interacting SSH chains in the opposite phases with the winding number $ν=1$. We show that this phase is protected by a chiral symmetry, similar to the non-interacting phases.

Thermodynamics and entanglement entropy of the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

D. F. Munoz-Arboleda, R. Arouca, C. Morais Smith

Topological phase transitions are found in a variety of systems and were shown to be deeply related with a thermodynamic description through scaling relations. Here we investigate the entanglement entropy, which is a quantity that captures the central charge of a critical model and the thermodynamics of the nonreciprocal Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. Although this model has been widely studied, the thermodynamic properties reveal interesting physics not explored so far. In order to analyze the boundary effects of the model, we use Hill's thermodynamics to split the grand potential in two contributions: the extensive one, related to the bulk, and the subdivision one, related to the boundaries. Then, we derive the thermodynamic entropy for both the edges and the bulk, and the heat capacity for the bulk at the topological phase transitions. The latter is related to the central charge when the underlying theory is a conformal field theory, whereas the first reveals the resilience of the topological edge states to finite temperatures. The phase transition between phases that are adiabatically connected with the Hermitian SSH model display the well-known behavior of systems within the Dirac universality class, but the transition between phases with complex energies shows an unexpected critical behavior that signals the emergence of an imaginary time crystal.

Detection of topological phases by quasilocal operators

Wing Chi Yu, Pedro D Sacramento, Yanchao Li +2 more

It was proposed recently by some of the authors that the quantum phase transition of a topological insulator like the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model may be detected by the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the reduced density matrix. Here we further extend the scheme of identifying the order parameters by considering the SSH model with the addition of triplet superconductivity. This model has a rich phase diagram due to the competition of the SSH ``order'' and the Kitaev ``order,'' which requires the introduction of four order parameters to describe the various topological phases. We show how these order parameters can be expressed simply as averages of projection operators on the ground state at certain points deep in each phase and how one can simply obtain the phase boundaries. A scaling analysis in the vicinity of the transition lines is consistent with the quantum Ising universality class.
