Anomalous dynamical response of non-Hermitian topological phases

Abstract

Composite topological phases with intriguing topology like M\"obius strips emerge in sublattice symmetric non-Hermitian systems due to spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry at some parameter regime. While these phases have been characterized by nonadiabatic complex geometric phases of multiple participating complex bands, the physical properties of these phases remain largely unknown. We explore the dynamical response of these phases by studying Loschmidt echo from an initial state of the Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, which is evolved by a non-Hermitian SSH Hamiltonian after a sudden quench in parameters. Topology-changing quenches display nonanalytical temporal behavior of return rates (logarithm of the Loschmidt echo) for the non-Hermitian SSH Hamiltonian in the trivial, M\"obius, and topological phase. Moreover, the dynamical topological order parameter appears only at one side of the Brillouin zone for the M\"obius phase case in contrast to both sides of the Brillouin zone for quench by the trivial and topological phase of the non-Hermitian SSH model. The last feature is a dynamical signature of different symmetry constraints on the real and imaginary parts of the complex bands in the M\"obius phase.

From chiral topological dynamics to chiral topological amplification: Real versus imaginary parameters in a Hermitian bosonic chain

Kiran Babasaheb Estake, T. R. Vishnu, Dibyendu Roy

We propose a Hermitian quadratic bosonic model (QBH) whose dynamical matrix exhibits distinct topological and dynamical phenomena depending on whether the hopping and pairing amplitudes are real or purely imaginary. In the real-parameter regime, the dynamical matrix is unitarily equivalent to four decoupled copies of the sublattice-symmetric non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (nSSH2) model, thereby inheriting its topological phases and energy spectrum, including the M\"obius phase, a gapless topological phase with fractional winding number, having no Hermitian counterpart. We show that the dynamics generated by the QBH Hamiltonian naturally reproduces non-Hermitian time evolution, without invoking nonlinear Schr\"odinger dynamics or ad hoc normalization. It is demonstrated by analytically calculating the Loschmidt amplitude and computing the dynamical topological order parameter under periodic boundary conditions, which displays a distinct chiral response in the M\"obius phase. In contrast, when the hopping and pairing terms are taken to be purely imaginary, the dynamical matrix becomes unitarily equivalent to a different version of the sublattice-symmetric non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (nSSH1) model that supports only two topological phases, trivial and nontrivial, and the M\"obius phase disappears. The latter system exhibits sublattice-dependent chiral amplification under open boundary conditions. We show that this amplification arises from the nontrivial topology of the dynamical matrix, establishing a clear link between topological phase and amplification behavior in the imaginary-parameter regime.

Fixed Points and Dynamic Topological Phenomena in a Parity-Time-Symmetric Quantum Quench

Xingze Qiu, Tian-Shu Deng, Ying Hu +2 more

We identify dynamic topological phenomena such as dynamic Chern numbers and dynamic quantum phase transitions in quantum quenches of the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hamiltonian with parity-time (PT) symmetry. Their occurrences in the non-unitary dynamics are intimately connected with fixed points in the Brillouin zone, where the density matrices do not evolve in time. Based on our theoretical formalism characterizing topological properties of non-unitary dynamics, we prove the existence of fixed points for quenches between distinct static topological phases in the PT-symmetry-preserving regime, thus unveiling the interplay between dynamic topological phenomena and PT symmetry. Interestingly, non-Hermiticity of the driving Hamiltonian gives rise to rich dynamic topological phenomena which are different, either qualitatively or quantitatively, from their counterparts in unitary dynamics. Our work sheds light on dynamic topological phenomena in open systems and is readily accessible in experiments.

-symmetry berry phases, topology and -symmetry breaking

Abstract We study the complex Berry phases in non-Hermitian systems with parity- and time-reversal   symmetry. We investigate a kind of two-level system with   symmetry. We find that the real part of the the complex Berry phases have two quantized values and they are equal to either 0 or π , which originates from the topology of the Hermitian eigenstates. We also find that if we change the relative parameters of the Hamiltonian from the unbroken-   -symmetry phase to the broken-   -symmetry phase, the imaginary part of the complex Berry phases are divergent at the exceptional points. We exhibit two concrete examples in this work, one is a two-level toys model, which has nontrivial Berry phases; the other is the generalized Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) model that has physical loss and gain in every sublattice. Our results explicitly demonstrate the relation between complex Berry phases, topology and   -symmetry breaking and enrich the field of the non-Hermitian physics.

Non-Hermitian topological phases and dynamical quantum phase transitions: a generic connection

Longwen Zhou, Qianqian Du

Abstract The dynamical and topological properties of non-Hermitian systems have attracted great attention in recent years. In this work, we establish an intrinsic connection between two classes of intriguing phenomena—topological phases and dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs)—in non-Hermitian systems. Focusing on one-dimensional models with chiral symmetry, we find DQPTs following the quench from a trivial to a non-Hermitian topological phase. Moreover, the critical momenta and critical time of the DQPTs are found to be directly related to the topological invariants of the non-Hermitian system. We further demonstrate our theory in three prototypical non-Hermitian lattice models, the lossy Kitaev chain (LKC), the LKC with next-nearest-neighbor hoppings, and the nonreciprocal Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model. Finally, we suggest a proposal to experimentally verify the found connection by a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond.

Topological classification of dynamical phase transitions

Szabolcs Vajna, Balázs Dóra

We study the nonequilibrium time evolution of a variety of one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) systems (including SSH model, Kitaev-chain, Haldane model, $p+ip$ superconductor, etc.) following a sudden quench. We prove analytically that topology-changing quenches are always followed by nonanalytical temporal behavior of return rates (logarithm of the Loschmidt echo), referred to as dynamical phase transitions (DPTs) in the literature. Similarly to edge states in topological insulators, DPTs can be classified as being topologically protected or not. In 1D systems the number of topologically protected nonequilibrium time scales are determined by the difference between the initial and final winding numbers, while in 2D systems no such relation exists for the Chern numbers. The singularities of dynamical free energy in the 2D case are qualitatively different from those of the 1D case; the cusps appear only in the first time derivative.

Anatomy of non-Hermitian dynamical quantum phase transitions

Yongxu Fu, Gao Xianlong

We establish a unified framework for dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) in non-Hermitian systems that encompasses both biorthogonal and self-norm nonbiorthogonal formulations for pure and mixed states under quantum quench protocols. Our framework provides explicit expressions for the Loschmidt amplitude, Loschmidt echo, and rate function, revealing a universal geometric signature of DQPTs in the two-band model: orthogonality of two related vectors in two-dimensional real space. Strikingly, we demonstrate that nonbiorthogonal quenches from non-Hermitian to Hermitian Hamiltonians under chiral symmetry exhibit emergent topological characteristics of DQPTs, unveiling their fundamental features beyond conventional Hermitian regimes. This work establishes fundamental geometric and topological principles governing quantum criticality in open systems, with implications for quantum sensing and many-body physics in dissipative environments.
