Differential scattering cross section of the non-Abelian Aharonov-Bohm effect in multiband systems

Abstract

We develop a unified treatment of the non-Abelian Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect in isotropic multiband systems, namely, the scattering of particles on a gauge field corresponding to a noncommutative Lie group. We present a complex contour integral representation of the scattering states for such systems, and using their asymptotic form, we calculate the differential scattering cross section. The angular dependence of the cross section turns out to be the same as that obtained originally by Aharonov and Bohm in their seminal paper [Phys. Rev. 115, 485 (1959)], but this time, it depends on the polarization of the incoming plane wave. As an application of our theory, we perform the contour integrals for the wave functions explicitly and calculate the corresponding cross section for three nontrivial isotropic multiband systems relevant to condensed matter and particle physics. To have a deeper insight into the nature of the scattering, we plot the probability and current distributions for different incoming waves. This paper is a generalization of our recent results on the Abelian AB effect providing an extension of exactly solvable AB scattering problems.

Unified description of the Aharonov-Bohm effect in isotropic multiband electronic systems

R. Németh, József Cserti

We present a unified treatment of the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect for two-dimensional multiband electronic systems possessing isotropic band structures. We propose an integral representation of the AB scattering state of an electron scattered by an infinitely thin solenoid. Moreover, we derive the asymptotic form of the AB scattering state and obtain the differential cross section from that. We found a remarkable result, namely, that this cross section is the same for all isotropic systems and agrees with that obtained first by Aharonov and Bohm for spinless free-particle systems. To demonstrate the generality of our theory, we consider several specific multiband systems relevant to condensed matter physics.

Aharonov-Bohm effect in a class of noncommutative theories

Ashok Das, H. Falomir, M. Nieto +2 more

The Aharonov-Bohm effect including spin-noncommutative effects is considered. At linear order in $\ensuremath{\theta}$, the magnetic field is gauge invariant although spatially strongly anisotropic. Despite this anisotropy, the Schr\"odinger-Pauli equation is separable through successive unitary transformations and the exact solution is found. The scattering amplitude is calculated and compared with the usual case. In the noncommutative Aharonov-Bohm case the differential cross section is independent of $\ensuremath{\theta}$.

Aharonov-Bohm and Coulomb Scattering Near the Forward Direction

Charles M. Sommerfield, Hisakazu Minakata

The exact wave functions that describe scattering of a charged particle by a confined magnetic field (Aharonov-Bohm effect) and by a Coulomb field are analyzed. It is well known that the usual procedure of finding asymptotic forms of these functions which admit a separation into a superposition of an incident plane wave and a circular or spherical scattered wave is problematic near the forward direction. It thus appears to be impossible to express the conservation of probability by means of an optical theorem of the usual kind. Both the total cross section and the forward scattering amplitude appear to be infinite. To address these difficulties we find a new representation for the asymptotic form of the Aharonov-Bohm wave function that is valid for all angles. Rather than try to define a cross section at forward angles, however, we work instead with the probability current and find that it is quite well behaved. The same is true for Coulomb scattering. We trace the usual difficulties to a nonuniformity of limits.

Quantum scattering in helically twisted geometries: Coulomb-like interaction and Aharonov-Bohm effect

Augusto Tadeu P. de Araújo, Edilberto O. Silva

We investigate the scattering of a charged quantum particle in a helically twisted background that induces an effective Coulomb-like interaction, in the presence of an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) flux. Starting from the nonrelativistic Schrödinger equation in the twisted metric, we derive the radial equation and show that, after including the AB potential, it can be mapped onto the same Kummer-type differential equation that governs the planar $2D$ Coulomb $+$ AB problem, with a geometry-induced Coulomb strength and the azimuthal quantum number shifted as $m\to m-λ$. We construct the exact scattering solutions, obtain closed expressions for the partial-wave $S$ matrix and phase shifts, and derive the corresponding scattering amplitude, differential cross section, and total cross section. We also show that the pole structure of the $S$ matrix is consistent with the bound-state quantization previously obtained for the helically twisted Coulomb-like problem.

Non-stationary Aharonov-Bohm effect

Alexander I. Milstein, Ivan Sergeevich Terekhov

The non-stationary Aharonov-Bohm effect (scattering of electron in the field of a narrow solenoid with alternating current) is considered. Using the eikonal approximation, the wave function of electron, the differential and total scattering cross sections are found. Unlike the case of direct current, the total cross section in the case of alternating current turns out to be finite. An oscillating asymmetry in the differential scattering cross section is discovered. The possibility of experimental observation of the effect is discussed.

The incident wave in Aharonov-Bohm scattering wavefunction

Sahng-Kyoon Yoo, D.K. Park

It is shown that only the infinite angular momentum quantum states contribute to the incident wave in Aharonov-Bohm (AB) scattering. This result is clearly shown by recalculating the AB calculation with arbitrary decomposition of summation over the angular momentum quantum numbers in wave function. It is motivated from the fact that the pole contribution in the integral representation used by Jackiw is given by only the infinite angular momentum states, in which the closed contour integration involving this pole gives just the incident wave.
