Non-stationary Aharonov-Bohm effect

Abstract

The non-stationary Aharonov-Bohm effect (scattering of electron in the field of a narrow solenoid with alternating current) is considered. Using the eikonal approximation, the wave function of electron, the differential and total scattering cross sections are found. Unlike the case of direct current, the total cross section in the case of alternating current turns out to be finite. An oscillating asymmetry in the differential scattering cross section is discovered. The possibility of experimental observation of the effect is discussed.

Continuous Aharonov-Bohm effect

Uzunova

The Aharonov--Bohm effect in a model system described by the generalized Schrödinger equation is considered. The scattering cross section is calculated in the standard formulation: an electron beam impinges on a long impenetrable solenoid encompassing a magnetic field. It is shown that the incident wave is scattered regardless of whether the magnetic flux through the solenoid is an integer of flux quanta whereby the scattering cross section becomes a continuously nonzero function of the total magnetic flux. The problem may find its application in investigations of the soliton-magnon interaction in the low-dimensional magnetism.

AHARONOV–BOHM EFFECT WITH SPIN-POLARIZED ELECTRONS

V. R. Khalilov

The scattering of spin-polarized electrons in an Aharonov–Bohm vector potential is considered. The scattering cross-sections for spin-unpolarized and spin-polarized electron beams differ. It is shown that a bound electron state may occur if the interaction of electron spin with magnetic field having the form of two-dimensional delta function is included. The occurrence of bound state can modify the scattering states but the total cross-section does not change.

Unified description of the Aharonov-Bohm effect in isotropic multiband electronic systems

R. Németh, József Cserti

We present a unified treatment of the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect for two-dimensional multiband electronic systems possessing isotropic band structures. We propose an integral representation of the AB scattering state of an electron scattered by an infinitely thin solenoid. Moreover, we derive the asymptotic form of the AB scattering state and obtain the differential cross section from that. We found a remarkable result, namely, that this cross section is the same for all isotropic systems and agrees with that obtained first by Aharonov and Bohm for spinless free-particle systems. To demonstrate the generality of our theory, we consider several specific multiband systems relevant to condensed matter physics.

Aharonov-Bohm Effect for Electron Phase Representing a Quantum Mechanical Average Value

Vladan Panković, D. Kapor

In the usual Aharonov-Bohm effect, representing an especial case of the Berry phase phenomenon, classical magnetic field within long and thin solenoid (or classical vector potential of the electromagnetic field without this solenoid) causes phase difference and interference shape translation of the quantum propagating (external) electron. In this work we consider a variation of the usual Aharonov-Bohm effect with two solenoids sufficiently close one to the other so that (external) electron cannot propagate between two solenoids but only around both solenoids. Here magnetic field (or classical vector potential of the electromagnetic field) acting at quantum propagating (external) electron represents the quantum mechanical average value or statistical mixture. It is obtained by wave function of single (internal, quantum propagating within some solenoid wire) electron (or homogeneous ensemble of such (internal) electrons) representing a quantum superposition with two practically non-interfering terms. All this implies that phase difference and interference shape translation of the quantum propagating (external) electron represent the quantum mechanical average value or statistical mixture. In this way we obtain a very interesting generalization of the usual Aharonov-Bohm effect and Berry phase concept. As it is well-known in the usual experimental arrangement corresponding to the AharonovBohm effect [1]-[4] (representing an especial case of the Berry phase phenomenon [4], [5]) behind a diaphragm with two slits there is a long and very thin solenoid (placed perpendicularly, i.e. in the z-axis direction, to the x-0-y plane of the propagation of the (external, without solenoid

A Kuramoto Model for the Bound State Aharonov–Bohm Effect

Alviu Rey Nasir, José Luís da Silva, Jingle B. Magallanes +2 more

The Aharonov–Bohm effect can be described as a phase difference in interfering charged particles that travel through two distinct pathways oppositely surrounding a perpendicularly-positioned solenoid. The magnetic field emanates from the solenoid but does not intersect the pathways. On the other hand, the Kuramoto model can be used to identify the synchronization conditions that lead to a particular phase difference by treating the phases as coupled oscillators. Starting with the overall wave function expression for the electron in an Aharonov–Bohm potential, we derive a version of the Kuramoto model describing the phase dynamics of the bound state of the quantum mechanical system. We show that the resulting synchronization condition of the model coincides with the allowable values of the flux parameter for our case to achieve an Aharonov–Bohm effect.

Aharonov-Bohm effect in a class of noncommutative theories

Ashok Das, H. Falomir, M. Nieto +2 more

The Aharonov-Bohm effect including spin-noncommutative effects is considered. At linear order in $\ensuremath{\theta}$, the magnetic field is gauge invariant although spatially strongly anisotropic. Despite this anisotropy, the Schr\"odinger-Pauli equation is separable through successive unitary transformations and the exact solution is found. The scattering amplitude is calculated and compared with the usual case. In the noncommutative Aharonov-Bohm case the differential cross section is independent of $\ensuremath{\theta}$.
