Abstract

We investigate a time-efficient and robust preparation of spin-squeezed states---a class of states of interest for quantum enhanced metrology---in internal bosonic Josephson junctions with a time-dependent nonlinear coupling strength between atoms in two different hyperfine states. We treat this state-preparation problem, which had previously been addressed using shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA), using the recently proposed analytical modification of this class of quantum control protocols that has become known as the enhanced STA (eSTA) method. We characterize the state-preparation process by evaluating the time dependence of the coherent spin-squeezing and number-squeezing parameters and the target-state fidelity. We show that the state-preparation times obtained using the eSTA method compare favorably to those found in previously proposed approaches. We also demonstrate that the increased robustness of the eSTA approach---compared to its STA counterpart---leads to additional advantages for potential experimental realizations of strongly spin-squeezed states in internal bosonic Josephson junctions.

Twist-and-turn dynamics of spin squeezing in bosonic Josephson junctions: Enhanced shortcuts-to-adiabaticity approach

Manuel Odelli, A. Ruschhaupt, Vladimir M. Stojanović

The twist-and-turn dynamics of spin squeezing results from the interplay of the one-axis-twisting (nonlinear in the collective-spin operators) and the transverse-field turning (linear) term in the underlying Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick-type Hamiltonian, both with constant (time-independent) prefactors. Using shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) and the recently developed enhanced version thereof (eSTA), we demonstrate here that dynamics of this type can be utilized for a fast and robust preparation of spin-squeezed states in internal bosonic Josephson junctions, i.e., condensates of cold bosonic atoms in two different internal (hyperfine) states (single-boson modes) coupled through Rabi rotations. Assuming that the initial state of this system is its ground state for a given initial value of the (time-dependent) linear coupling strength and that the nonlinear coupling strength remains constant, we set out to determine the time dependence of the linear (Rabi) coupling strength that allows for the generation of spin-squeezed states using the STA- and eSTA-based approaches. We then characterize the modified twist-and-turn dynamics of this system by evaluating the coherent spin-squeezing and number-squeezing parameters, as well as the fidelity of the target spin-squeezed states. In this way, we show that the eSTA approach allows for a particularly robust realization of strongly spin-squeezed states in this system, consistently outperforming its adiabatic and STA-based counterparts, even for systems with several hundred particles. Our method could also be employed for the generation of metrologically-useful non-Gaussian states.

Quantum control via enhanced shortcuts to adiabaticity

C. Whitty, A. Kiely, A. Ruschhaupt

Fast and robust quantum control protocols are often based on an idealized approximate description of the relevant quantum system. While this may provide a performance that is close to optimal, improvements can be made by incorporating elements of the full system representation. We propose a technique for such scenarios, called enhanced shortcuts to adiabaticity (eSTA).The eSTA method works for previously intractable Hamiltonians by providing an analytical correction to existing STA protocols. This correction can be easily calculated, and the resulting protocols are outside the class of STA schemes. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the method for three distinct cases: manipulation of an internal atomic state beyond the rotating-wave approximation, transport of a neutral atom in an optical Gaussian trap, and transport of two trapped ions in an anharmonic trap.

Design of shortcuts to adiabaticity for Bose–Einstein condensate dynamics in soliton Josephson junctions

Jingru Wu, Chengyu Han, Qian Kong

Abstract This article primarily establishes a two-soliton system and employs the Lewis–Riesenfeld invariant inverse control method to achieve shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) technology. We study an atomic soliton Josephson junctions (SJJs) device and subsequently compare and analyze it with atomic bosonic Josephson junctions. Moreover, we use higher-order expressions of the auxiliary equations to optimize the results and weaken the detrimental effect of the sloshing amplitude. We find that in the adiabatic shortcut evolution of two systems with time-containing tunnelling rates, the SJJs system is more robust over a rather short time evolution. In comparison with linear ramping, the STA technique is easier to achieve with the precise modulation of the quantum state in the SJJs system.

Efficient generation of arbitrary photon-number-squeezed light via shortcuts to adiabaticity

Jiawen Yu, Ke-Xiong Yan, Yuan Qiu +3 more

The implementation of shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) enables a substantial reduction in the evolution time relative to traditional adiabatic methods, concurrently mitigating detrimental environmental interference. In this manuscript, we present a protocol using STA for the one-step generation of squeezed-light states of arbitrary photons. By starting from different initial Fock states, high-fidelity (>0.99) squeezed-light states can be generated with the same control Hamiltonian. We investigate the protocol's robustness under conditions of systematic errors and environmental noises through numerical simulations, which confirm the feasibility of the proposed scheme. The protocol may facilitate the investigation of quantum state control process, with the potential for significant impact in the near future.

Manipulation of an elongated internal Josephson junction of bosonic atoms

A. Farolfi, Alessandro Zenesini, Riccardo Cominotti +4 more

We report on the experimental characterization of a spatially extended Josephson junction realized with a coherently coupled two-spin-component Bose-Einstein condensate. The cloud is trapped in an elongated potential such that transverse spin excitations are frozen. We extract the nonlinear parameter with three different manipulation protocols. The outcomes are all consistent with a simple local density approximation of the spin hydrodynamics, i.e., of the so-called Bose-Josephson junction equations. We also identify a method to produce states with a well-defined uniform magnetization.

Fast adiabatic preparation of multisqueezed states by jumping along the path

Chuyi Chen, Jian-Yu Lu, Xuyang Chen +1 more

Multisqueezed states, also known as generalized squeezed states, are valuable quantum non-Gaussian resources, because they can feature nonclassical properties such as large phase-space Wigner negativities. In this paper, we introduce a shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) method for the fast preparation of multisqueezed states. In contrast to previous STA methods, which rely on the use of counterdiabatic control to suppress unwanted nonadiabatic effects, our method simplifies the process and accelerates state preparation by selecting an appropriate sampling along a quantum evolution path. We demonstrate the high fidelity and fast preparation of multisqueezed states, as well as hybrid entangled states between a bosonic mode and a qubit.
