Abstract

Exact solutions for non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems are rare but may provide valuable insights into the interplay between Hermitian and non-Hermitian components. We report our investigation of a non-Hermitian variant of a $p$-wave Kitaev chain by introducing staggered imbalanced pair creation and annihilation terms. We find that there exist fixed lines in the phase diagram, at which the ground state remains unchanged in the presence of a non-Hermitian term under the periodic boundary condition for a finite system. This allows the constancy of the topological index in the process of varying the balance strength at arbitrary rate, exhibiting the robustness of the topology for the non-Hermitian Kitaev chain under time-dependent perturbations. The underlying mechanism is investigated through the equivalent quantum spin system obtained by the Jordan-Wigner transformation for infinite chain. In addition, the exact solution shows that a resonant non-Hermitian impurity can induce a pair of zero modes in the corresponding Majorana lattice, which asymptotically approach the edge modes in the thermodynamic limit, manifesting the bulk-boundary correspondence. Numerical simulation is performed for the quench dynamics for the systems with slight deviation from the fixed lines to show the stability region in time. This work reveals the interplay between the pair creation and annihilation pairing processes.

Topological phases in a Kitaev chain with imbalanced pairing

C. Li, X. Z. Zhang, Gang Zhang +1 more

We systematically study a Kitaev chain with imbalanced pair creation and annihilation, which is introduced by non-Hermitian pairing terms. An exact phase diagram shows that the topological phase is still robust under the influence of the conditional imbalance. The gapped phases are characterized by a topological invariant, the extended Zak phase, which is defined by the biorthonormal inner product. Such phases are destroyed at the points where the coalescence of ground states occurs, associated with the time-reversal symmetry breaking. We find that the Majorana edge modes also exist in an open chain in the time-reversal symmetry-unbroken region, demonstrating the bulk-edge correspondence in such a non-Hermitian system.

Symmetry and Topology in a Non-Hermitian Kitaev chain

Ayush Raj, Soham Ray, Sai Satyam Samal

We investigate the non-Hermitian Kitaev chain with non-reciprocal hopping amplitudes and asymmetric superconducting pairing. We work out the symmetry structure of the model and show that particle-hole symmetry (PHS) is preserved throughout the entire parameter regime. As a consequence of PHS, the topological phase transition point of a finite open chain coincides with that of the periodic (infinite) system. By explicitly constructing the zero-energy wave functions (Majorana modes), we show that Majorana modes necessarily occur as reciprocal localization pairs accumulating on opposite boundaries, whose combined probability density exhibits an exact cancellation of the non-Hermitian skin effect for the zero energy modes. Excited states, by contrast, generically display skin-effect localization, with particle and hole components accumulating at opposite ends of the system. At the level of bulk topology, we further construct a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant in restricted parameter regimes that correctly distinguishes the topological and trivial phases. Finally, we present the topological phase diagram of the non-Hermitian Kitaev chain across a broad range of complex parameters and delineate the associated phase boundaries.

Topological quantum criticality in non-Hermitian extended Kitaev chain

S Rahul, Sujit Sarkar

An attempt is made to study the quantum criticality in non-Hermitian system with topological characterization. We use the zero mode solutions to characterize the topological phases and, criticality and also to construct the phase diagram. The Hermitian counterpart of the model Hamiltonian possess quite a few interesting features such as Majorana zero modes (MZMs) at criticality, unique topological phase transition on the critical line and hence these unique features are of an interest to study in the non-Hermitian case also. We observe a unique behavior of critical lines in presence of non-Hermiticity. We study the topological phase transitions in the non-Hermitian case using parametric curves which also reveal the gap closing point through exceptional points. We study bulk and edge properties of the system where at the edge, the stability dependence behavior of MZMs at criticality is studied and at the bulk we study the effect of non-Hermiticity on the topological phases by investigating the behavior of the critical lines. The study of non-Hermiticity on the critical lines revels the rate of receding of the topological phases with respect to the increase in the value of non-Hermiticity. This work gives a new perspective on topological quantum criticality in non-Hermitian quantum system.

Resonant generation of a p -wave Cooper pair in a non-Hermitian Kitaev chain at the exceptional point

X. M. Yang, Z. Song

We investigate a non-Hermitian extension of a Kitaev chain by considering imaginary $p$-wave pairing amplitudes. The exact solution shows that the phase diagram consists of two phases with real and complex Bogoliubov--de Gennes spectra, associated with the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking, which is separated by a hyperbolic exceptional line. The exceptional points (EPs) correspond to a specific Cooper pair state $(1+{c}_{k}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}{c}_{\ensuremath{-}k}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}})\left|0\right\ensuremath{\rangle}$ with movable $k$ when the parameters vary along the exceptional line. The non-Hermiticity around EP supports resonant generation of such a pair state from the vacuum state $\left|0\right\ensuremath{\rangle}$ of fermions via the critical dynamic process. In addition, we propose a scheme to generate a superconducting state through a dynamic method.

Deconstructing effective non-Hermitian dynamics in quadratic bosonic Hamiltonians

Vincent P Flynn, Emilio Cobanera, Lorenza Viola

Abstract Unlike their fermionic counterparts, the dynamics of Hermitian quadratic bosonic Hamiltonians are governed by a generally non-Hermitian Bogoliubov-de Gennes effective Hamiltonian. This underlying non-Hermiticity gives rise to a dynamically stable regime, whereby all observables undergo bounded evolution in time, and a dynamically unstable one, whereby evolution is unbounded for at least some observables. We show that stability-to-instability transitions may be classified in terms of a suitably generalized P T symmetry , which can be broken when diagonalizability is lost at exceptional points in parameter space, but also when degenerate real eigenvalues split off the real axis while the system remains diagonalizable. By leveraging tools from Krein stability theory in indefinite inner-product spaces, we introduce an indicator of stability phase transitions, which naturally extends the notion of phase rigidity from non-Hermitian quantum mechanics to the bosonic setting. As a paradigmatic example, we fully characterize the stability phase diagram of a bosonic analogue to the Kitaev–Majorana chain under a wide class of boundary conditions. In particular, we establish a connection between phase-dependent transport properties and the onset of instability, and argue that stable regions in parameter space become of measure zero in the thermodynamic limit. Our analysis also reveals that boundary conditions that support Majorana zero modes in the fermionic Kitaev chain are precisely the same that support stability in the bosonic chain.

Extended Kitaev chain with longer-range hopping and pairing

Antonio Alecce, Luca Dell’Anna

We consider the Kitaev chain model with finite and infinite range in the hopping and pairing parameters, looking in particular at the appearance of Majorana zero-energy modes and massive edge modes. We study the system both in the presence and in the absence of time-reversal symmetry, by means of topological invariants and exact diagonalization, disclosing very rich phase diagrams. In particular, for extended hopping and pairing terms, we can get as many Majorana modes at each end of the chain as the neighbors involved in the couplings. Finally, we generalize the transfer matrix approach useful to calculate the zero-energy Majorana states at the edges for a generic number of coupled neighbors.
