Abstract

An attempt is made to study the quantum criticality in non-Hermitian system with topological characterization. We use the zero mode solutions to characterize the topological phases and, criticality and also to construct the phase diagram. The Hermitian counterpart of the model Hamiltonian possess quite a few interesting features such as Majorana zero modes (MZMs) at criticality, unique topological phase transition on the critical line and hence these unique features are of an interest to study in the non-Hermitian case also. We observe a unique behavior of critical lines in presence of non-Hermiticity. We study the topological phase transitions in the non-Hermitian case using parametric curves which also reveal the gap closing point through exceptional points. We study bulk and edge properties of the system where at the edge, the stability dependence behavior of MZMs at criticality is studied and at the bulk we study the effect of non-Hermiticity on the topological phases by investigating the behavior of the critical lines. The study of non-Hermiticity on the critical lines revels the rate of receding of the topological phases with respect to the increase in the value of non-Hermiticity. This work gives a new perspective on topological quantum criticality in non-Hermitian quantum system.

Topological Quantum Criticality in non-Hermitian Kitaev chain with Longer Range Interaction

S Rahul, Sujit Sarkar

An Attempt is made to study the non-Hermitian effect on the topological quantum criticality and also in the physics of Majroana zero mode (MZMs). In this work, the effects and modifications done by the non-Hermitian factor $γ$ on the topological phases, criticality and also in the MZMs is studied. We use the zero mode solutions (ZMS) to construct the phase diagram. We find a correspondence between Hermitian and non-Hermitian model Hamiltonian. The MZMs appear at criticality and has a stability dependence on the new passage created because of the introduction of non-Hermiticity. The multicritical points are also studied to understand their nature under the influence of non-Hemiticity. We also study the effect of non-Hermiticity on the topological phases.

Unconventional quantum criticality in a non-Hermitian extended Kitaev chain

S Rahul, Nilanjan Roy, Ravi Kumar +2 more

We investigate the nature of quantum criticality and topological phase transitions near the critical lines obtained for the extended Kitaev chain with next nearest neighbor hopping parameters and non-Hermitian chemical potential. We surprisingly find multiple gap-less points, the locations of which in the momentum space can change along the critical line unlike the Hermitian counterpart. The interesting simultaneous occurrences of vanishing and sign flipping behavior by real and imaginary components, respectively of the lowest excitation is observed near the topological phase transition. Introduction of non-Hermitian factor leads to an isolated critical point instead of a critical line and hence, reduced number of multi-critical points as compared to the Hermitian case. The critical exponents obtained for the multi-critical and critical points show a very distinct behavior from the Hermitian case.

Symmetry and Topology in a Non-Hermitian Kitaev chain

Ayush Raj, Soham Ray, Sai Satyam Samal

We investigate the non-Hermitian Kitaev chain with non-reciprocal hopping amplitudes and asymmetric superconducting pairing. We work out the symmetry structure of the model and show that particle-hole symmetry (PHS) is preserved throughout the entire parameter regime. As a consequence of PHS, the topological phase transition point of a finite open chain coincides with that of the periodic (infinite) system. By explicitly constructing the zero-energy wave functions (Majorana modes), we show that Majorana modes necessarily occur as reciprocal localization pairs accumulating on opposite boundaries, whose combined probability density exhibits an exact cancellation of the non-Hermitian skin effect for the zero energy modes. Excited states, by contrast, generically display skin-effect localization, with particle and hole components accumulating at opposite ends of the system. At the level of bulk topology, we further construct a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant in restricted parameter regimes that correctly distinguishes the topological and trivial phases. Finally, we present the topological phase diagram of the non-Hermitian Kitaev chain across a broad range of complex parameters and delineate the associated phase boundaries.

Majorana Zero Modes and Bulk-Boundary Correspondence at Quantum Criticality

S Rahul, Ravi Kumar, Y R Kartik +1 more

Majorana zero modes are well studied in the gapped phases of topological systems. We investigate Majorana zero modes at the topological quantum criticality in one dimensional topological superconducting model with longer range interaction. We identify stable localized Majorana zero modes appearing at criticality under certain conditions. Topological invariant number for these non-trivial criticalities is obtained from zeros of a complex function associated with the Hamiltonian. Behavior of parametric curve at criticalities validate the invariant obtained and account for the appearance of Majorana zero modes at criticality. Trivial and non-trivial topological nature of criticality due to the presence of multicritical point cause an unusual topological transition along the critical line. We observe and investigate this unique transition in terms of eigenvalue spectrum. Appearance of MZMs at criticality demands integer value of topological invariant number in order to validate the concept of bulk-boundary correspondence. Hence we propose a scheme to separate the invariant number into fractional and integer contribution to establish bulk-boundary correspondence at criticality.

Critical non-Hermitian topology induced quantum sensing

Saubhik Sarkar, Francesco Ciccarello, Angelo C. M. Carollo +1 more

Abstract Non-Hermitian (NH) physics predicts open quantum system dynamics with unique topological features such as exceptional points and the NH skin effect. We show that this new paradigm of topological systems can serve as probes for bulk Hamiltonian parameters with quantum-enhanced sensitivity reaching Heisenberg scaling. Such enhancement occurs close to a spectral topological phase transition, where the entire spectrum undergoes a delocalization transition. We provide an explanation for this enhanced sensitivity based on the closing of point gap, which is a genuinely NH energy gap with no Hermitian counterpart. This establishes a direct connection between energy-gap closing and quantum enhancement in the NH realm. Our findings are demonstrated through several paradigmatic NH topological models in various dimensions and potential experimental implementations.

Universal quantum criticality in static and Floquet-Majorana chains

Paolo Molignini, Wei Chen, R. Chitra

The topological phase transitions in static and periodically driven Kitaev chains are investigated by means of a renormalization group (RG) approach. These transitions, across which the numbers of static or Floquet Majorana edge modes change, are accompanied by divergences of the relevant Berry connections. These divergences at certain high-symmetry points in momentum space form the basis of the RG approach, through which topological phase boundaries are identified as a function of system parameters. We also introduce several aspects to characterize the quantum criticality of the topological phase transitions in both static and Floquet systems: a correlation function that measures the overlap of Majorana-Wannier functions, the decay length of the Majorana edge mode, and a scaling law relating the critical exponents. These indicate a common universal critical behavior for topological phase transitions, in both static and periodically driven chains. For the latter, the RG flows additionally display intriguing features related to gap closures at non-high-symmetry points due to momentarily frozen dynamics.
