Abstract

We examine the quench dynamics of an extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model involving long-range hopping that can hold multiple topological phases. Using winding number diagrams to characterize the system's topological phases geometrically, it is shown that there can be multiple winding number transition paths for a quench between two topological phases. The dependence of the quench dynamics is studied in terms of the survival probability of the fermionic edge modes and postquench transport. For two quench paths between two topological regimes with the same initial and final topological phase, the survival probability of edge states is shown to be strongly dependent on the winding number transition path. This dependence is explained using energy band diagrams corresponding to the paths. Following this, the effect of the winding number transition path on transport is investigated. We find that the velocities of maximum transport channels varied along the winding number transition path. This variation depends on the path we choose, i.e., it increases or decreases depending upon the path. An analysis of the coefficient maps, energy spectrum, and spatial structure of the edge states of the final quench Hamiltonian provides an understanding of the path-dependent velocity variation phenomenon.

Topological characterizations of an extended Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model

Dizhou Xie, Wei Gou, Teng Xiao +2 more

Abstract The Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) model perhaps is the easiest and the most basic model for topological excitations. Many variations and extensions of the SSH model have been proposed and explored to better understand both fundamental and novel aspects of topological physics. The SSH4 model has been proposed theoretically as an extended SSH model with higher dimension (the internal dimension changes from two to four). It has been proposed that the winding number in this system can be determined through a higher-dimensional extension of the mean chiral displacement measurement, however, this has not yet been verified in experiment. Here, we report the realization of this model with ultracold atoms in a momentum lattice. We verify the winding number through measurement of the mean chiral displacement in a system with higher internal dimension, we map out the topological phase transition in this system, and we confirm the topological edge state by observation of the quench dynamics when atoms are initially prepared at the system boundary.

Topological Anderson insulating phases in the long-range Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

Hsiu-Chuan Hsu, Tsung-Wei Chen

The long-range Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, in which the second nearest-neighbor hopping is taken into account, exhibits a topological phase diagram that contains winding numbers $w=0,\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}1$, and 2. In the clean system, the change in winding number stems from the band-touching phenomenon. In the presence of disorder, the renormalization of energy band and Fermi level results in the nonzero density of states in the energy gap. These midgap states cause the crossover phenomenon and the divergence of localization length at a critical disorder strength ${U}_{c}$ in the finite SSH system. In this study, we numerically computed the mean winding number and localization length for the disordered SSH system. We find that the disorder is able to drive phase transitions between different mean winding numbers: $w=0\ensuremath{\rightarrow}1$, $0\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2$, $1\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2$, and $2\ensuremath{\rightarrow}1$ in the weak disorder regime. By investigating the wave function distribution and the self-energy, the nonzero mean winding numbers correspond to the so-called topological Anderson insulating (TAI) phases. The finite size scaling for the mean winding number in the TAI phase is shown. For describing the phase transitions in the thermodynamic limit, we apply the criterion of band gap closure resulting from the broadening of energy band and Fermi level to determine the critical disorder strength. The critical disorder strength for self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA) ${U}_{c}^{\mathrm{SCBA}}$ and that for first Born approximation (FBA) ${U}_{c}^{\mathrm{FBA}}$ are numerically calculated. ${U}_{c}^{\mathrm{SCBA}}$ is found to match with ${U}_{c}$ qualitatively. Nonetheless, SCBA indicates the different roles of band shifts and Fermi level broadening near the topological phase transitions. Band shift/Fermi level broadening is more dominant for the transitions from low-to-high/high-to-low winding number. Interestingly, for the transition from bulk insulator to TAI, ${U}_{c}^{\mathrm{FBA}}$ is quantitatively closer to ${U}_{c}$ than ${U}_{c}^{\mathrm{SCBA}}$ as long as the renormalized band gap is zero within FBA.

Entanglement in quenched extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with anomalous dynamical quantum phase transitions

Cheuk Yiu Wong, Tsz Hin Hui, Pedro D Sacramento +1 more

Research on topological models unveils fascinating physics, especially in the realm of dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs). However, the understanding of entanglement structures and properties near DQPT in models with longer-range hoppings is far from complete. In this work, we study DQPTs in the quenched extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Anomalous DQPTs, where the number of critical momenta exceeds the winding number differences between the prequench and postquench phases, are observed. We find that the entanglement exhibits local maximum (minimum) around the anomalous DQPTs, in line with the level crossings (separations) around the middle of the correlation matrix spectrum. We further categorize the phases in the equilibrium model into two classes and distinctive features in the time evolution of the entanglement involving quenches within and across the two classes are identified. The findings pave the way to a better understanding of topological models with longer-range hoppings in the out-of-equilibrium regime.

Fate of high winding number topological phases in the disordered extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

We use the Lindblad equation approach to investigate topological phases hosting more than one localized state at each side of a disordered Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain with properly tuned long-range hoppings. Inducing a nonequilibrium steady state across the chain, we probe the robustness of each phase and the fate of the edge modes looking at the distribution of electrons along the chain and the corresponding standard deviation in the presence of different kinds of disorder either preserving the symmetries of the Hamiltonian or not.

Exact analytical edge states in the extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

P. A. Grizzi, A. A. Aligia, P. Roura-Bas

We investigate the topology of the different phases of the extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (eSSH) model, which includes hopping processes between translationally inequivalent atoms beyond nearest neighbors. Exact analytical expressions for the edge states of a semi-infinite eSSH chain are derived, with wave functions that decay exponentially from the boundary with a unit-cell decay factor z. From the winding number of the bulk Hamiltonian under periodic boundary conditions, we determine the topological phase diagram and establish the bulk-boundary correspondence: changes in the winding number coincide with bulk gap closings and with the condition |z|=1 for the edge-state solutions. For finite chains, we further obtain analytical, approximate expressions for the low-energy edge states, which are shown to be highly accurate.

Topological phases of extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard model

Pei-Jie Chang, Jinghui Pi, Muxi Zheng +4 more

Despite extensive studies on the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard (SSHH) model, the variant incorporating second-nearest neighbor hopping remains largely unexplored. Here, the topological classification of the extended SSH model is analyzed within the framework of the BDI symmetry class, using the winding number as the corresponding topological invariant. We investigate the ground-state properties of this extended SSHH model using the constrained-path auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (CP-AFQMC) method. We show that this model exhibits rich topological phases, characterized by robust edge states against interaction. We quantify the properties of these edge states by analyzing spin correlation and second-order Rényi entanglement entropy. The system exhibits long-range spin correlation and near-zero Rényi entropy at half-filling. Besides, there is an anti-ferromagnetic order at quarter-filling. Interestingly, an external magnetic field disrupts this anti-ferromagnetic order, restoring long-range spin correlation and near-zero Rényi entropy. Furthermore, our work provides a paradigm for studying topological properties in large interacting systems via the CP-AFQMC algorithm.
