Abstract

The long-range Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, in which the second nearest-neighbor hopping is taken into account, exhibits a topological phase diagram that contains winding numbers $w=0,\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}1$, and 2. In the clean system, the change in winding number stems from the band-touching phenomenon. In the presence of disorder, the renormalization of energy band and Fermi level results in the nonzero density of states in the energy gap. These midgap states cause the crossover phenomenon and the divergence of localization length at a critical disorder strength ${U}_{c}$ in the finite SSH system. In this study, we numerically computed the mean winding number and localization length for the disordered SSH system. We find that the disorder is able to drive phase transitions between different mean winding numbers: $w=0\ensuremath{\rightarrow}1$, $0\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2$, $1\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2$, and $2\ensuremath{\rightarrow}1$ in the weak disorder regime. By investigating the wave function distribution and the self-energy, the nonzero mean winding numbers correspond to the so-called topological Anderson insulating (TAI) phases. The finite size scaling for the mean winding number in the TAI phase is shown. For describing the phase transitions in the thermodynamic limit, we apply the criterion of band gap closure resulting from the broadening of energy band and Fermi level to determine the critical disorder strength. The critical disorder strength for self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA) ${U}_{c}^{\mathrm{SCBA}}$ and that for first Born approximation (FBA) ${U}_{c}^{\mathrm{FBA}}$ are numerically calculated. ${U}_{c}^{\mathrm{SCBA}}$ is found to match with ${U}_{c}$ qualitatively. Nonetheless, SCBA indicates the different roles of band shifts and Fermi level broadening near the topological phase transitions. Band shift/Fermi level broadening is more dominant for the transitions from low-to-high/high-to-low winding number. Interestingly, for the transition from bulk insulator to TAI, ${U}_{c}^{\mathrm{FBA}}$ is quantitatively closer to ${U}_{c}$ than ${U}_{c}^{\mathrm{SCBA}}$ as long as the renormalized band gap is zero within FBA.

Topological and dynamical phase transitions in the Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model with quasiperiodic and long-range hoppings

Weijie Zhang, Yi-Piao Wu, Ling-Zhi Tang +1 more

Abstract Disorders and long-range hoppings can induce exotic phenomena in condensed matter and artificial systems. We study the topological and dynamical properties of the quasiperiodic Su–Schrier–Heeger model with long-range hoppings. It is found that the interplay of quasiperiodic disorder and long-range hopping can induce topological Anderson insulator phases with non-zero winding numbers ω = 1 , 2 , and the phase boundaries can be consistently revealed by the divergence of zero-energy mode localization length. We also investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics by ramping the long-range hopping along two different paths. The critical exponents extracted from the dynamical behavior agree with the Kibble–Zurek mechanic prediction for the path with W = 0.90 . In particular, the dynamical exponent of the path crossing the multicritical point is numerical obtained as 1 / 6 ∼ 0.167 , which agrees with the unconventional finding in the previously studied XY spin model. Besides, we discuss the anomalous and non-universal scaling of the defect density dynamics of topological edge states in this disordered system under open boundary condictions.

Critical phase boundary and finite-size fluctuations in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with random intercell couplings

D. S. Shapiro, S. V. Remizov, A. V. Lebedev +4 more

A dimerized fermion chain, described by Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, is a well-known example of a one-dimensional system with a nontrivial band topology. An interplay of disorder and topological ordering in the SSH model is of great interest owing to experimental advancements in synthesized quantum simulators. In this paper, we investigate a special sort of a disorder when intercell hopping amplitudes are random. Using a definition for ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$-topological invariant $\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\in}{0;1}$ in terms of a non-Hermitian part of the total Hamiltonian, we calculate $\ensuremath{\langle}\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\rangle}$ averaged by random realizations. This allows to find: (i) an analytical form of the critical surface that separates phases of distinct topological orders and (ii) finite-size fluctuations of $\ensuremath{\nu}$ for arbitrary disorder strength. Numerical simulations of the edge modes formation and gap suppression at the transition are provided for the finite-size system. In the end, we discuss a band-touching condition derived within the averaged Green's function method for a thermodynamic limit.

Kibble-Zurek behavior in one-dimensional disordered topological insulators

Zhoujian Sun, Menghua Deng, Fuxiang Li

The discovery of nonlocal order parameters in real space provides a feasible scheme for studying dynamical critical behavior in topological systems. We study the critical phenomena in the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model by investigating the inhomogeneities in the local winding number in real space. By slowly quenching the system across the topological phase transition during a finite time interval, we find that the length scale defined through the local winding number satisfies the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. In contrast to the density of excitation, the scaling of this length scale is in full analog to the behavior of traditional continuous phase transitions with local order parameter and spontaneous symmetry breaking. In addition, the critical behavior and Kibble-Zurek mechanism in the generalized SSH with next-nearest-neighbor hopping are also studied. These results extend our understanding to the Kibble-Zurek mechanism and topological phase transition in nonequilibrium.

One-dimensional interacting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model at quarter filling: An exact diagonalization study

Wang, Yan-Xiao, Zhong, Yin

This study explores the ground-state phase diagram and topological properties of the spinless 1D Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with nearest-neighbor (NN) interactions at quarter filling. We analyze key physical quantities such as the local electron density distribution, correlation functions for bond-order-wave (BOW) and charge-density-wave (CDW) -- by integrating twisted boundary conditions with the Lanczos technique and employing high-precision numerical diagonalization methods, complemented by a mean-field approximation (MFA) based on bond-order and charge-density modulation analysis. This approach enables precise identification of phase transition critical points. Our results indicate that the system exhibits a topologically trivial band insulating (BI) phase for strong attractive interactions, with its upper boundary forming a downward-opening curve peaking at $V/t\simeq-2.3$ and extending to $V/t\simeq-2.6$. Within $-2.6 \leq V/t \leq -0.5$, a BOW phase emerges for $\left|δt/t\right| > 0.45$, with its boundaries converging as $\left|δt/t\right|$ decreases, terminating at a single point at $\left|δt/t\right|\simeq0.45$. In other parameter regions, a CDW phase is realized. Through this analysis, we elucidate the topological properties of the interacting spinless SSH model at quarter filling, highlighting the competition among CDW, BOW, and BI phases. By tuning $V$ and $δt$, the system exhibits diverse correlated phenomena, offering new insights into one-dimensional quantum phase transitions and the interplay between topology and order.

Reentrant topological phases and entanglement scalings in moiré-modulated extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Model

Guo-Qing Zhang, L. F. Quezada, Shi-Hai Dong

Recent studies of moiré physics have unveiled a wealth of opportunities for significantly advancing the field of quantum phase transitions. However, properties of reentrant phase transitions driven by moiré strength are poorly understood. Here, we investigate the reentrant sequence of phase transitions and the invariant of universality class in moiré-modulated extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. For the simplified case with intercell hopping $w=0$, we analytically derive renormalization relations of Hamiltonian parameters to explain the reentrant phenomenon. For the general case, numerical phase boundaries are calculated in the thermodynamic limit. The bulk boundary correspondence between zero-energy edge modes and entanglement spectrum is revealed from the degeneracy of both quantities. We also address the correspondence between the central charge obtained from entanglement entropy and the change in winding number during the phase transition. Our results shed light on the understanding of universal characteristics and bulk-boundary correspondence for moiré induced reentrant phase transitions in 1D condensed-matter systems.

Quench dynamics of edge states in a finite extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger system

A. Ghosh, A. Martin, Sonjoy Majumder

We examine the quench dynamics of an extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model involving long-range hopping that can hold multiple topological phases. Using winding number diagrams to characterize the system's topological phases geometrically, it is shown that there can be multiple winding number transition paths for a quench between two topological phases. The dependence of the quench dynamics is studied in terms of the survival probability of the fermionic edge modes and postquench transport. For two quench paths between two topological regimes with the same initial and final topological phase, the survival probability of edge states is shown to be strongly dependent on the winding number transition path. This dependence is explained using energy band diagrams corresponding to the paths. Following this, the effect of the winding number transition path on transport is investigated. We find that the velocities of maximum transport channels varied along the winding number transition path. This variation depends on the path we choose, i.e., it increases or decreases depending upon the path. An analysis of the coefficient maps, energy spectrum, and spatial structure of the edge states of the final quench Hamiltonian provides an understanding of the path-dependent velocity variation phenomenon.
