Spontaneous Brillouin Scattering in a Few-Mode Optical Fiber

Hikari Kikuchi, Rekishu Yamazaki

We report a comprehensive experimental study of spontaneous Brillouin scattering in a few-mode optical fiber, resolving both forward and backward scattering processes for intra- and inter-modal interactions. Using heterodyne detection, Stokes and anti-Stokes components without external acoustic excitation are observed and quantitatively extracted Brillouin shifts, linewidths, and gain coefficients. Forward scattering is mediated by guided torsional-radial acoustic modes with frequencies ranging from MHz to GHz, while backward scattering involves longitudinal core-guided modes at frequencies of tens of GHz. These results provide calibrated benchmarks for Brillouin interactions in few-mode fibers, offering insights relevant to phonon-based quantum applications and mode-selective optomechanics.

Squeezed states of coupled photons and phonons in nanoscale waveguides

Hashem Zoubi

Abstract We investigate the generation of photon–phonon entangled states by exploiting stimulated Brillouin scattering in nanoscale waveguides. The squeezing type Hamiltonian that represents creation and annihilation of photon–phonon pairs is obtained out of the multimode photon–phonon interaction Hamiltonian in the presence of a pump field. The Bogoliubov eigenstates of the Hamiltonian, which are a coherent mix of propagating photons and phonons, show squeezing properties in the uncertainties of the collective quadrature operators. The measurement of the photonic component can provide a controllable source of single phonons in demand.

Heralded multi-phonon Fock states with forward Brillouin scattering and single-photon detection

Andrew Shepherd, Ryan O. Behunin

We propose a practical scheme for heralding multi-phonon Fock states using the quantum dynamics of forward Brillouin scattering and single-photon detection. This scheme also enables the production of multi-photon states.
