Squeezed states of coupled photons and phonons in nanoscale waveguides

Abstract

Abstract We investigate the generation of photon–phonon entangled states by exploiting stimulated Brillouin scattering in nanoscale waveguides. The squeezing type Hamiltonian that represents creation and annihilation of photon–phonon pairs is obtained out of the multimode photon–phonon interaction Hamiltonian in the presence of a pump field. The Bogoliubov eigenstates of the Hamiltonian, which are a coherent mix of propagating photons and phonons, show squeezing properties in the uncertainties of the collective quadrature operators. The measurement of the photonic component can provide a controllable source of single phonons in demand.

Enhanced mechanical squeezing in an optomechanical system via backward stimulated Brillouin scattering

Shan-Shan 珊珊 Chen 陈, Y. G. Xie, Jing-Jing 京京 Zhang 张 +4 more

Abstract We investigate theoretically the enhancement of mechanical squeezing in a multimode optomechanical system by introducing a coherent phonon–photon interaction via the backward stimulated Brillouin scattering (BSBS) process. The coherent photon–phonon interaction where two optical modes couple to a Brillouin acoustic mode with a large decay rate provides an extra channel for the cooling of a Duffing mechanical oscillator. The squeezing degree and the robustness to the thermal noises of the Duffing mechanical mode can be enhanced greatly. When the Duffing nonlinearity is weak, the squeezing degree of the mechanical mode in the presence of BSBS can be improved by more than one order of magnitude compared with that in the absence of BSBS. Our scheme may be extended to other quantum systems to study novel quantum effects.

Quantum Nonlinear Optics in Optomechanical Nanoscale Waveguides

Hashem Zoubi, Klemens Hammerer

We show that strong nonlinearities at the few photon level can be achieved in optomechanical nanoscale waveguides. We consider the propagation of photons in cm-scale one-dimensional nanophotonic structures where stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is strongly enhanced by radiation pressure coupling. We introduce a configuration that allows slowing down photons by several orders of magnitude via SBS from sound waves using two pump fields. Slowly propagating photons can then experience strong nonlinear interactions through virtual off-resonant exchange of dispersionless phonons. As a benchmark we identify requirements for achieving a large cross-phase modulation among two counterpropagating photons applicable for photonic quantum gates. Our results indicate that strongly nonlinear quantum optics is possible in continuum optomechanical systems realized in nanophotonic structures.

Memory Device for Photons by exploiting Brillouin Interactions in Nanowires

Hashem Zoubi

Memory devices for single photons are notable components for quantum information processing and quantum communications. The present study investigates the possibility of achieving storage of light at the level of single photons inside nanofibers by exploiting stimulated Brillouin scattering. We present first the standard approach using a coherent buffer in a nanoscale waveguide by transferring the optical signal coherently to an acoustic wave, and that can be extracted by the reverse process. The life time of the acoustic wave put limitation on the applicability of such approach for single photon signals. We introduce a configuration for achieving a slow signal at the level of single photons without gain or loss. The process utilizes photon-phonon Brillouin interactions involving two counter propagating pump fields. The photon storage is achieved through time delay of significantly slow signal inside nanowires. We address the condition for getting negligible influence due to the scattering off thermal phonons.

Generation of photonic Cooper pairs in nanoscale optomechanical waveguides

Yi Zhang, Lei Zhang, Yong‐yuan Zhu

In this paper we theoretically show that counterpart photonic Cooper pairs can be achieved in nanoscale waveguides with radiation pressure effect. We demonstrate that due to Brillouin scattering a Stokes photon and an anti-Stokes one can exchange virtual phonons, leading to an effective photon-photon interaction. The effective interaction Hamiltonian of the two photons is identical to that for electrons in the BCS theory, and the photonic counterpart of the superconducting energy gap can appear. Quite different from the conventional stimulated Brillouin scattering the number of photon pairs can be amplified. The result could be used as a photon-pair laser and might have a possible application in integrated optics and quantum information processing in the future.

Optomechanically-generated photon–phonon single pairs with both discrete- and continuous-variable entanglements

Cun Yu, Zhenshan S. Yang, Xiang‐Guo Meng +3 more

Abstract By exploiting two mechanical modes in an optomechanical resonator, photon–phonon single pairs with both discrete- and continuous-variable entanglements can be generated in a waveguide that is coupled to the resonator. The discrete- and continuous-variable entanglements in the photon–phonon pair can be independently controlled via adjusting the central frequency and spectral width of the input optical pump, respectively.

Photon and phonon spectral functions for continuum quantum optomechanics

Hashem Zoubi

We study many-particle phenomena of propagating multimode photons and phonons interacting through a Brillouin scattering type Hamiltonian in nanoscale waveguides. We derive photon and phonon retarded Green's functions and extract their spectral functions in applying the factorization approximation of the mean-field theory. The real part of the self-energy provides renormalization energy shifts for the photons and the phonons. Besides the conventional leaks, the imaginary part gives effective photon and phonon damping rates induced due to many-particle phenomena. The results extend the simple spectral functions of quantum optomechanics into continuum quantum optomechanics. We present the influence of thermal phonons on the photon effective damping rates and consider cases of specific photon fields to be excited within the waveguide and which are of importance for phonon cooling scenarios.
