Abstract

We calculate the dynamical spin structure factor of the generalized spin-$1/2$ compass spin chain using the density matrix renormalization group. The model, also known as the twisted Kitaev spin chain, was recently proposed to be relevant for the description of the spin chain compound ${\mathrm{CoNb}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$. It features bond-dependent interactions and interpolates between an Ising chain and a one-dimensional variant of Kitaev's honeycomb spin model. The structure factor, in turn, is found to interpolate from gapped and nondispersive in the Ising limit to gapless with nontrivial continua in the Kitaev limit. In particular, the component of the structure factor perpendicular to the Ising directions changes abruptly at the Kitaev point into a dispersionless continuum due to the emergence of an extensive ground-state degeneracy. We show this continuum is consistent with analytical Jordan-Wigner results. We also discuss implications for future inelastic scattering experiments and applications to materials, particularly ${\mathrm{CoNb}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$.

Quantum critical dynamical response of the twisted Kitaev spin chain

Uliana E. Khodaeva, Dmitry L. Kovrizhin, Johannes Knolle

The dynamical structure factor of the transverse field Ising model (TFIM) shows universal power-law divergence at its quantum critical point, signatures of which have been arguably observed in inelastic neutron scattering studies of quantum spin chain materials, for example CoNb 2 O 6 . However, it has recently been suggested that its microscopic description is better captured in terms of a twisted Kitaev spin chain (TKSC) with bond-anisotropic couplings. Here, we present exact results for the dynamical structure factor of the TKSC across its quantum critical point, analyzing both the universal low-frequency response and the non-universal high-energy features. In addition, we explore extensions of the model including broken glide symmetry as well as the case of random, and incommensurate magnetic fields. Notably, in the latter case, the fermionic excitations exhibit a localization-delocalization transition, which is manifest in the dynamical response as a distinct signature at finite frequency. We discuss the relevance of these features for the observation of quantum critical response in experiments.

Transforming from Kitaev to Disguised Ising Chain: Application to CoNb 2 O 6

Derek Churchill, Hae‐Young Kee

For many years, CoNb_{2}O_{6} has served as an exemplar of the one-dimensional Ising model. However, recent experimental and theoretical analyses challenge its applicability to this material. Prior to that, a tailored spin model for 3d^{7} systems such as Co^{2+}, known as the JKΓ model, has emerged, featuring Heisenberg (J), Kitaev (K), and Gamma (Γ) interactions. While these interactions are permitted by the symmetry of the system, their role in CoNb_{2}O_{6} remains enigmatic. We present a microscopic theory based on spin-orbit entangled J_{eff}=1/2 states, aimed at elucidating the roles of Kitaev and Gamma interactions in shaping Ising anisotropy. Leveraging strong coupling theory, we identify a dominant ferromagnetic Kitaev interaction. Furthermore, by comparing dynamical structure factors obtained via exact diagonalization with those from inelastic neutron scattering experiments, we find an antiferromagnetic Γ interaction, which dictates the Ising axis and explains the mechanism behind moment pinning. Our theory provides a microscopic origin for Ising behavior in spin-orbit coupled one-dimensional chains and posits CoNb_{2}O_{6} as a rare Kitaev chain.

A continuum of compass spin models on the honeycomb lattice

Haiyuan Zou, Bo Liu, Erhai Zhao +1 more

Quantum spin models with spatially dependent interactions, known as compass models, play an important role in the study of frustrated quantum magnetism. One example is the Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice with spin-liquid (SL) ground states and anyonic excitations. Another example is the geometrically frustrated quantum 120° model on the same lattice whose ground state has not been unambiguously established. To generalize the Kitaev model beyond the exactly solvable limit and connect it with other compass models, we propose a new model, dubbed 'the tripod model', which contains a continuum of compass-type models. It smoothly interpolates the Ising model, the Kitaev model, and the quantum 120° model by tuning a single parameter , the angle between the three legs of a tripod in the spin space. Hence it not only unifies three paradigmatic spin models, but also enables the study of their quantum phase transitions. We obtain the phase diagram of the tripod model numerically by tensor networks in the thermodynamic limit. We show that the ground state of the quantum 120° model has long-range dimer order. Moreover, we find an extended spin-disordered (SL) phase between the dimer phase and an antiferromagnetic phase. The unification and solution of a continuum of frustrated spin models as outline here may be useful to exploring new domains of other quantum spin or orbital models.

Dynamical structure factor in the non-Abelian phase of the Kitaev honeycomb model in the presence of quenched disorder

Daniel Otten, Ananda Roy, Fabian Hassler

Kitaev's model of spins interacting on a honeycomb lattice describes a quantum spin liquid, where an emergent static ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge field is coupled to Majorana fermions. In the presence of an external magnetic field and for a range of interaction strengths, the system behaves as a gapped, non-Abelian quantum spin liquid. In this phase, the vortex excitations of the emergent ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge field have Majorana zero modes bound to them. Motivated by recent experimental progress in measuring and characterizing real materials that could exhibit spin-liquid behavior, we analytically calculate the dynamical spin structure factor in the non-Abelian phase of the Kitaev's honeycomb model. In particular, we treat the case of quenched disorder in the vortex configurations. Our calculations reveal a peak in the low-energy dynamical structure factor that is a signature of the spin-liquid behavior. We map the effective Hamiltonian to that of a chiral $p$-wave superconductor by using the Jordan-Wigner transformation. Subsequently, we analytically calculate the wave functions of the Majorana zero modes, the energy splitting for finite separation of the vortices and, finally, the dynamical structure factor in presence of quenched disorder.

A continuum compass model on the honeycomb lattice: phase diagram from tensor networks

Haiyuan Zou, Bo Liu, Erhai Zhao +1 more

Quantum spin models with spatially dependent interactions, known as compass models, play an important role in study of frustrated quantum magnetism and Mott insulators with orbital degrees of freedom. One example is Kitaev model on honeycomb lattice with spin liquid ground states and anyonic excitations. It is highly desirable to go beyond this exactly solvable limit by generalizing Kitaev model to connect with specific materials or other known models. A conventional way to achieve this is through hybridization with other models. For example, Kitaev-Heisenberg model was proposed to describe iridates. Here we pursue an alternative direction and propose a new dubbed the tripod model, which contains a continuum of compass-type models. It smoothly interpolates Ising Kitaev and quantum $120^\circ$ model by tuning a single parameter $\theta'$, angle between three legs of a tripod in spin space. Not only does tripod model establish a natural connection between three paradigmatic models, but it also enables study of quantum phase transitions between them. We solve this model numerically by tensor networks in thermodynamic limit and find a spin-disordered (spin liquid) phase between an antiferromagnetic phase and a dimer phase. Our results unambiguously establish long-range order of geometrically frustrated $120^\circ$ model and provide an intuitive picture for phase transition between spin-liquid phase and dimer phase. The tripod model proposed here could be realized in cold atoms experiments by introducing non-Abelian artificial gauge fields for fermionic Hubbard model.

Kitaev-like honeycomb magnets: Global phase behavior and emergent effective models

Juraj Rusnačko, Dorota Gotfryd, Jiří Chaloupka

Compounds of transition metal ions with strong spin-orbit coupling recently attracted attention due to the possibility to host frustrated bond-dependent anisotropic magnetic interactions. In general, such interactions lead to complex phase diagrams that may include exotic phases, e.g., the Kitaev spin liquid. Here we report on our comprehensive analysis of the global phase diagram of the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model relevant to honeycomb lattice compounds ${\mathrm{Na}}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{3}$ and $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{RuCl}}_{3}$. We have utilized recently developed method based on spin coherent states that enabled us to resolve arbitrary spin patterns in the cluster ground states obtained by exact diagonalization. Global trends in the phase diagram are understood in combination with the analytical mappings of the Hamiltonian that uncover peculiar links to known models---Heisenberg, Ising, Kitaev, or compass models on the honeycomb lattice---or reveal entire manifolds of exact fluctuation-free ground states. Finally, our study can serve as a methodological example that can be applied to other spin models with complex bond-dependent non-Heisenberg interactions.
