Quantum critical dynamical response of the twisted Kitaev spin chain

Abstract

The dynamical structure factor of the transverse field Ising model (TFIM) shows universal power-law divergence at its quantum critical point, signatures of which have been arguably observed in inelastic neutron scattering studies of quantum spin chain materials, for example CoNb 2 O 6 . However, it has recently been suggested that its microscopic description is better captured in terms of a twisted Kitaev spin chain (TKSC) with bond-anisotropic couplings. Here, we present exact results for the dynamical structure factor of the TKSC across its quantum critical point, analyzing both the universal low-frequency response and the non-universal high-energy features. In addition, we explore extensions of the model including broken glide symmetry as well as the case of random, and incommensurate magnetic fields. Notably, in the latter case, the fermionic excitations exhibit a localization-delocalization transition, which is manifest in the dynamical response as a distinct signature at finite frequency. We discuss the relevance of these features for the observation of quantum critical response in experiments.

Spin dynamics of the generalized quantum spin compass chain

Pontus Laurell, Gonzalo Álvarez, Elbio R. Dagotto

We calculate the dynamical spin structure factor of the generalized spin-$1/2$ compass spin chain using the density matrix renormalization group. The model, also known as the twisted Kitaev spin chain, was recently proposed to be relevant for the description of the spin chain compound ${\mathrm{CoNb}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$. It features bond-dependent interactions and interpolates between an Ising chain and a one-dimensional variant of Kitaev's honeycomb spin model. The structure factor, in turn, is found to interpolate from gapped and nondispersive in the Ising limit to gapless with nontrivial continua in the Kitaev limit. In particular, the component of the structure factor perpendicular to the Ising directions changes abruptly at the Kitaev point into a dispersionless continuum due to the emergence of an extensive ground-state degeneracy. We show this continuum is consistent with analytical Jordan-Wigner results. We also discuss implications for future inelastic scattering experiments and applications to materials, particularly ${\mathrm{CoNb}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$.

Local dynamics and thermal activation in the transverse-field Ising chain

Jiahao Yang, Weishi Yuan, Takashi Imai +3 more

There has been considerable recent progress in identifying candidate materials for the transverse-field Ising chain (TFIC), a paradigmatic model for quantum criticality. Here, we study the local spin dynamical structure factor of different spin components in the quantum disordered region of the TFIC. We show that the low-frequency local dynamics of the spins in the Ising- and transverse-field directions have strikingly distinctive temperature dependencies. This leads to the thermal-activation gap for the secular term of the nuclear magnetic resonance $1/{T}_{2}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ relaxation rate to be half of that for the $1/{T}_{1}$ relaxation rate. Our findings reveal a surprise in the nonzero-temperature dynamics of the venerable TFIC model and uncover a means to evince the material realization of the TFIC universality.

Shedding Light on Microscopic Details: 2D Spectroscopy of 1D Quantum Ising Magnets

GiBaik Sim, Frank Pollmann, Johannes Knolle

The identification of microscopic models describing the low-energy properties of correlated materials has been a central goal of spectroscopic measurements. We demonstrate how 2D non-linear spectroscopy can be used to distinguish effective spin models whose linear responses show similar behavior. Motivated by recent experiments on the quasi-1D Ising magnet CoNb$_2$O$_6$, we focus on two proposed models, the ferromagnetic twisted Kitaev chain with bond dependent interactions and the transverse field Ising model. The dynamical spin structure factor probed in linear response displays similar broad spectra for both models from their fermionic domain wall excitations. In sharp contrast, the 2D non-linear spectra of the two models show clear qualitative differences: those of the twisted Kitaev model contain off-diagonal peaks originating from the bond dependent interactions and transitions between different fermion bands absent in the transverse field Ising model. We discuss the different signatures of spin fractionalization in integrable and non-integrable regimes of the models and their connection to experiments.

Glide symmetry breaking and Ising criticality in the quasi-1D magnet CoNb 2 O 6

Michele Fava, R. Coldea, S. A. Parameswaran

We construct a microscopic spin-exchange Hamiltonian for the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) Ising magnet [Formula: see text] that captures detailed and hitherto-unexplained aspects of its dynamic spin structure factor. We perform a symmetry analysis that recalls that an individual Ising chain in this material is buckled, with two sites in each unit cell related by a glide symmetry. Combining this with numerical simulations benchmarked against neutron scattering experiments, we argue that the single-chain Hamiltonian contains a staggered spin-exchange term. We further argue that the transverse-field-tuned quantum critical point in [Formula: see text] corresponds to breaking this glide symmetry, rather than an on-site Ising symmetry as previously believed. This gives a unified microscopic explanation of the dispersion of confined states in the ordered phase and quasiparticle breakdown in the polarized phase at high transverse field.

Quantum Critical Dynamics of the Random Transverse Field Ising Spin Chain

H. Rieger, Ferenc Iglói

Dynamical correlations of the spin and the energy density are investigated in the critical region of the random transverse-field Ising chain by numerically exact calculations in large finite systems (L ≤ 128). The spin-spin autocorrelation function is found to decay proportional to (log t) −2xm and (log t) −2xs m in the bulk and on the surface, respectively, with xm and x s m the bulk and surface magnetization exponents, respectively. On the other hand the critical energy-energy autocorrelation functions have a power law decay, which are characterized by novel critical exponents ηe ≈ 2.2 in the bulk and η s e ≈ 2.5 at the surface, respectively. The numerical results are compared with the predictions of a scaling theory. 05.50.+q, 64.60.Ak, 68.35.Rh Typeset using REVTEX 1 The asymptotic behavior of the time-dependent correlation functions for interacting many-body systems turned out a very difficult subject of theoretical research. Exact results in this field are scarce, one can mention the one-dimensional spin 1/2 XY-model [1] and the Ising chain in a transverse-field [2]. Both models can be mapped onto a system of non-interacting fermions, where the equal-position correlation functions are calculated by the Pfaffian method utilizing the theory of Töplitz determinants. In this Letter we consider- at the first time- the critical dynamical correlations of an interacting quantum system in the presence of quenched (i.e. time-dependent) disorder. It has recently become clear that quenched disorder has rather different effects on phase transitions in quantum systems [3] than on those thermally driven phase transitions. For example, in the Griffiths phase, which is situated at the disordered side of the critical point, the susceptibility has an essential singularity in classical systems, whereas in a quantum system the corresponding singularity is stronger, it is in a power law form. Here we consider the prototype of random quantum systems the one-dimensional random transverse-field Ising model defined by the Hamiltonian:

Anisotropic heisenberg quantum spin chains: excitations and neutron-scattering cross sections

Leonard Patrick English

The research presented here focuses on the theoretical investigation of spinons in quasi one-dimensional quantum spin chains from the perspective of neutron scattering, with emphasis placed on the calculation of dynamic spin structure factors for both unpolarised and polarised incident neutrons. Two anisotropic versions of the Heisenberg spin chain are considered for such an examination: the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic $XXZ$ model and the spin-$1/2$ ferromagnetic $XYZ$ model. The $XYZ$ model supports spinon scattering (modelled at finite temperature) and is related to the so-called Villain mode. The introduction of a perturbation in the form of an external transverse magnetic field or Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) leads to the emergence of incommensurability in the system; such a result is a signature of fractional excitations. The presence of these interactions also give rise to a chiral response associated with the spinons in the polarised term of the scattering cross section. The inelastic scattering cross section is computed for both unpolarised and polarised neutrons. In relation to the antiferromagnetic $XXZ$ model, emphasis is on spinon pair creation (modelled at $T = 0 {rm K}$). Motivated by the presence of a chiral response in the case of the $XYZ$ model mentioned above, a new technique is developed in order to incorporate DMI and the transverse magnetic field so that one can determine if there is a chiral property associated with the two-spinon system. This technique is numerical in nature and is based on Green function methods. Using the results produced by the Green function approach, the inelastic cross section in the presence of an external transverse magnetic field is computed for the first time. The result is compared with experimental neutron scattering data; good agreement is demonstrated between theory and experiments on ${rm CsCoBr}_3$.Finally, the Green function approach is generalised to account for the interactions between spin chains in magnetic compounds described by a staggered field. Various dynamic structure factors are computed for this scenario with results compared to experiment; good agreement between the theory and experiments on ${rm RbCoCl}_3$ is shown.
