Abstract

We investigate the local moment formation in the half-filled $\mathrm{SU}(N$) Hubbard model under a staggered ionic potential. As the Hubbard $U$ increases, the charge fluctuations are suppressed and eventually frozen when $U$ is above a critical value ${U}_{c}$, marking the development of well-defined local moment with integer $m$ fermions on the A sublattice and $(N\ensuremath{-}m)$ fermions on the B sublattice, respectively. We obtain an analytical solution for ${U}_{c}$ for the paramagnetic ground state within the variational Gutzwiller approximation and renormalized mean field theory. For large $N$, ${U}_{c}$ is found to depend on $N$ linearly with fixed $m/N$, but sublinearly with fixed $m$. The local moment formation is accompanied by a peculiar phase transition from the band insulator to the Mott insulator, where the ionic potential and quasiparticle weight are renormalized to zero simultaneously. Inside the Mott phase, the low-energy physics is described by the $\mathrm{SU}(N$) Heisenberg model with conjugate representations, which is widely studied in the literature.

Electronic phase transitions in the half-filled ionic Hubbard model

L. Craco, P. Lombardo, R. Hayn +2 more

A detailed study of electronic phase transitions in the ionic Hubbard model at half filling is presented. Within the dynamical mean field approximation a series of transitions from the band insulator via a metallic state to a Mott--Hubbard insulating phase is found at intermediate values of the one-body potential $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ with increasing the Coulomb interaction $U$. We obtain a critical region in which the metallic phase disappears and a coexistence phase between the band and the Mott insulating state sets in. Our results are consistent with those obtained at low dimensions, thus they provide a concrete description for the charge degrees of freedom of the ionic Hubbard model.

PHASE TRANSITION IN THE HALF-FILLED IONIC HUBBARD MODEL: MEAN-FIELD SLAVE BOSON STUDY

Duc‐Anh Le, Anh-Tuan Hoang

We study electronic phase transitions in the half-filled ionic Hubbard model with an on-site Coulomb repulsion U and an ionic energy Δ by using the Kotliar–Ruckenstein slave-boson theory. Assuming a paramagnetic solution, we show that for any non-zero values of Δ, with increasing U the system undergoes a transition from band-insulator to Mott-insulator. Our results have implied the absence of a metallic phase between the band and the Mott insulator phases.

Phase diagram of the half-filled ionic Hubbard model in the limit of strong correlations

Anwesha Chattopadhyay, Soumen Bag, H. R. Krishnamurthy +1 more

We investigate the ionic Hubbard model (IHM) at half-filling in the limit of strong correlations and large ionic potential. The low-energy effective Hamiltonian in this limit, obtained by a similarity transformation, is a modified $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model with effective second-neighbor hopping terms. We explore the possibilities of $d$-wave pairing and extended $s$-wave pairing superconducting (SC) phases on a two-dimensional square lattice at zero temperature within a Gutzwiller projected renormalized mean-field theory. In the sector of solutions that forbid spin-ordering, the system shows a finite nonzero $d$-wave as well as extended $s$-wave pairing amplitude for $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}\ensuremath{\sim}U\ensuremath{\gg}t$. The width of the superconducting phase in $U\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ regime shrinks with increase in $U$ and $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$, though the extended $s$-wave pairing phase is higher in energy than the $d$-wave pairing superconducting phase. But in a spin-resolved renormalized mean-field calculation, which allows for an antiferromagnetic (AF) order along with the $d$-wave or extended $s$-wave pairing, the SC phase is no longer viable and the system shows a direct transition from an AF ordered phase to a paramagnetic band insulator. Except for a thin sliver of a half-metallic AF phase close to the AF transition point, most of the AF ordered phase is a Mott insulator. We benchmarked the AF Mott insulator to band insulator transition within the Gutzwiller projected renormalized mean-field theory against the dynamical mean-field theory solved using continuous time quantum Monte Carlo. Our work suggests that the ground-state phase diagram of the IHM at half-filling in the limit of extreme correlations does not have any SC phase. The SC phase seen in the paramagnetic sector is a metastable phase, being higher in energy than the AF Mott insulator phase.

Phase transitions and spectral properties of the ionic Hubbard model in one dimension

Ara Go, Gun Sang Jeon

The ionic Hubbard model is investigated at half filling at zero temperature. We apply the cellular dynamical mean-field theory to the one-dimensional ionic Hubbard model to compute local quantities such as double occupancy and staggered charge density. Both quantities provide general transition behavior of the model from a band insulating phase to a Mott insulating phase. The renormalized band gap is introduced as an efficient order parameter for the transition from a band insulator. We also present the spectral properties of the ionic Hubbard model, which exhibit characteristic features for both weak and strong interactions.

Band-insulator–metal–Mott-insulator transition in the half-filled t−t′ ionic Hubbard chain

G. I. Japaridze, R. Hayn, P. Lombardo +1 more

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the half-filled $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}{t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ repulsive Hubbard model in the presence of a staggered ionic potential $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ using the continuum-limit bosonization approach. We find that with increasing on-site repulsion $U$, depending on the value of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping amplitude ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$, the model shows three different versions of the ground-state phase diagram. For ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}<{t}_{c}^{{*}^{\ensuremath{'}}}$, the ground-state phase diagram consists of the following three insulating phases: band insulator at $U<{U}_{c}$, ferroelectric insulator at ${U}_{c}<U<{U}_{s}$, and correlated (Mott) insulator at $U>{U}_{c}$. For ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}>{t}_{c}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ there is only one transition from a spin-gapped metallic phase at $U<{U}_{c}$ to a ferroelectric insulator at $U>{U}_{c}$. Finally, for intermediate values of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping amplitude ${t}_{c}^{{*}^{\ensuremath{'}}}<{t}^{\ensuremath{'}}<{t}_{c}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ we find that with increasing on-site repulsion, at ${U}_{c1}$ the model undergoes a second-order commensurate-incommensurate-type transition from a band insulator into a metallic state and at larger ${U}_{c2}$ there is a Kosterlitz-Thouless-type transition from a metal to a ferroelectric insulator.

Mott Transition in the Mass Imbalanced Ionic Hubbard Model at Half Filling

Nguyen Thi Hai Yen, Le Duc Anh, Hoàng Anh Tuấn +2 more

The Mott - Hubbard metal - insulator transition in the half-filled mass imbalanced ionic Hubbard model is investigated using the two-site dynamical mean field theory. We find that for a fixed mass imbalanced parameter r the critical interaction Uc increases when the ionic energy \(\Delta\) is increased. In the other hand, for a fixed \(\Delta\), \(U_c\) decreases with increasing the mass imbalance. We also show the existence of BI phase in the system for the case \(\Delta \ne 0\), \(U=0\) and calculate the staggered charge density \(n_B − n_A\) as a function of the interaction for different values of the mass imbalance. Our results in the limiting cases (\(r = 1\); \(\Delta \ne 0\) or/and \(\Delta = 0\); \(r\ne 1\)) are in good agreement with those obtained from full dynamical mean field theory.
