Abstract

A pedagogical introduction to counterdiabatic formalism of shortcuts to adiabaticity is given so that readers can access some of the more specialized articles in the rest of this theme issue without any barriers. A guide to references is given so that this article also serves as a mini-review. This article is part of the theme issue 'Shortcuts to adiabaticity: theoretical, experimental and interdisciplinary perspectives'.

Shortcuts to adiabaticity: theoretical framework, relations between different methods, and versatile approximations

Takuya Hatomura

Abstract Shortcuts to adiabaticity guide given systems to final destinations of adiabatic control via fast tracks. Various methods have been proposed as shortcuts to adiabaticity. The basic theory of shortcuts to adiabaticity was established in the 2010s, but it has still been developing and many fundamental findings have been reported. In this topical review, we give a pedagogical introduction to the theory of shortcuts to adiabaticity and revisit relations between different methods. Some versatile approximations in counterdiabatic driving, which is one of the methods of shortcuts to adiabaticity, will be explained in detail. We also summarize the recent progress in studies of shortcuts to adiabaticity.

Dynamical invariant formalism of shortcuts to adiabaticity

Kazutaka Takahashi

We give a pedagogical introduction to dynamical invariant formalism of shortcuts to adiabaticity. For a given operator form of the Hamiltonian with undetermined coefficients, the dynamical invariant is introduced to design the coefficients. We discuss how the method allows us to mimic adiabatic dynamics and describe a relation to the counterdiabatic formalism. The equation for the dynamical invariant takes a familiar form and is often used in various fields of physics. We introduce examples of Lax pair, quantum brachistochrone and flow equation. Counterdiabatic driving for periodically driven open quantum systems

Kazutaka Takahashi

We discuss dynamics of periodically driven open quantum systems. The time evolution of the quantum state is described by the quantum master equation, and the form of the dissipator is chosen so that the instantaneous stationary state is given by the Gibbs distribution. We find that the correlation between the population part and the coherence part of the density operator is induced by an adiabatic gauge potential. Although the introduction of the counterdiabatic term eliminates the correlation, additional correlations prevent convergence to the Gibbs distribution. We study the performance of the control by the counterdiabatic term. The system has three different scales and the performance strongly depends on the relations between their magnitudes. Experimental demonstration of robustness under scaling errors for superadiabatic population transfer in a superconducting circuit

Shruti Dogra, Antti P. Vepsäläinen, Gheorghe Sorin Paraoanu

We study experimentally and theoretically the transfer of population between the ground state and the second excited state in a transmon circuit by the use of superadiabatic stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (saSTIRAP). We show that the transfer is remarkably resilient against variations in the amplitudes of the pulses (scaling errors), thus demostrating that the superadiabatic process inherits certain robustness features from the adiabatic one. In particular, we provide new evidence of a plateau that appears at high values of the counterdiabatic pulse strength, which goes beyond the usual framework of saSTIRAP.
