Abstract

We study the phase diagram of the ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e}=7/3$ state in the $N=1$ Landau level in the presence of band mass anisotropy. Using the density matrix renormalization group on an infinite cylinder geometry, we find a continuous transition from the topologically ordered Laughlin fractional quantum Hall state to a stripe phase with a period of approximately five and a half magnetic lengths. The transition is driven by the condensation of the magnetoroton mode which becomes gapless at the critical point. We interpret the transition within the composite-boson theory as the onset of stripe order in a superfluid background, resulting from the roton mode going soft.

Continuous transition between fractional quantum Hall and superfluid states

Maissam Barkeshli, John McGreevy

We develop a theory of a direct, continuous quantum phase transition between a bosonic Laughlin fractional quantum Hall state and a superfluid, generalizing the Mott insulator to superfluid phase diagram of bosons to allow for the breaking of time-reversal symmetry. The direct transition can be protected by a spatial symmetry, and the critical theory is a pair of Dirac fermion fields coupled to an emergent Chern-Simons gauge field. The transition may be achieved in optical traps of ultracold atoms by starting with a $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/2$ bosonic Laughlin state and tuning an appropriate periodic potential to change the topology of the composite fermion band structure.

Continuous transition and gapless roton inside fractional quantum anomalous Hall states

Hongyu Lu, Han‐Qing Wu, Bin-Bin Chen +1 more

Collective excitations are crucial for understanding exotic phases and phase transitions in quantum many-body systems. In this work, we numerically demonstrate the microscopic realization of a transition from a translationally invariant fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) state to a spontaneously broken-translation-symmetry FQAH state, driven by softening of the magnetoroton mode via isotropic interactions in a topological flat-band model. At the critical point, the neutral excitation gap closes at finite momentum, while the charge gap remains stable. This transition shares similarities with Landau-level quantum Hall crystals and nematics but exhibits unique features. Criticality analysis shows that this non-trivial transition belongs to the Ising universality class. Such spontaneous translation symmetry breaking within a topologically ordered FQAH state could serve as a universal mechanism across various systems, with potential implications for quantum moiré materials and cold-atom systems.

Phase transitions of bosonic fractional quantum Hall effect in topological flat bands

Tian-Sheng Zeng

We study the phase transitions of bosonic $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/2$ fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect in different topological lattice models under the interplay of onsite periodic potential and Hubbard repulsion. Through exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods, we demonstrate that the many-body ground state undergoes a continuous phase transition between bosonic FQH liquid and a trivial (Mott) insulator induced by the periodic potential, characterized by the smooth crossover of energy and entanglement entropy. When the Hubbard repulsion decreases, we claim that this bosonic FQH liquid would turn into a superfluid state with a direct energy level crossing and a discontinuous leap of off-diagonal long-range order.

Emergent QED$_3$ at the bosonic Laughlin state to superfluid transition

Taige Wang, Xue-Yang Song, Michael P. Zaletel +1 more

Quantum phase transitions between topologically ordered and symmetry-broken phases lie beyond Landau theory. A prime example is the conjectured continuous transition from the bosonic $ν= 1/2$ Laughlin state to a superfluid, proposed to be governed by a QED$_3$--Chern--Simons (CS) critical point whose stability remains uncertain. We study half-filled bosons in the lowest Landau level subject to a lattice potential. Infinite-cylinder DMRG reveals a single continuous Laughlin--to--superfluid transition. Adiabatic flux insertion collapses the many-body gap and exposes massless Dirac quasiparticles, while momentum-resolved correlation lengths show that three lattice-related density modes share the same critical exponent, evidencing an emergent $SO(3)$ symmetry. The joint appearance of Dirac dispersion and symmetry enlargement provides microscopic support for a stable QED$_3$--CS fixed point. Our numerical strategy also offers a blueprint for exploring Landau-forbidden transitions in fractional Chern insulators and composite Fermi liquids realised in moire and cold-atom systems.

Quantum Hall charge density waves under anisotropy: from first-order to continuous transitions

Yuchi He, Kang Yang, M. O. Goerbig +1 more

We investigate the quantum Hall charge density wave states in the $N=2$ Landau level under mass anisotropy. In the absence of anisotropy, there are two first-order phase transitions between the Wigner crystal, the $2$-electron bubble phase, and the stripe phase. By adding mass anisotropy, our analytical and numerical studies show that the $2$-electron bubble phase disappears and the stripe phase significantly enlarges its domain in the phase diagram. Meanwhile, a regime of stripe crystals that may be observed experimentally is unveiled after the bubble phase gets out. Upon increase of the anisotropy, the energy of the phases at the transitions becomes progressively smooth as a function of the filling. We conclude that all first-order phase transitions are replaced by continuous phase transitions, providing a possible realisation of continuous quantum crystalline phase transitions.

Anisotropy-driven transition from the Moore-Read state to quantum Hall stripes

Zheng Zhu, Inti Sodemann, D. N. Sheng +1 more

We investigate the nature of the quantum Hall liquid in a half-filled second Landau level ($n=1$) as a function of band mass anisotropy using numerical exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. We find increasing the mass anisotropy induces a quantum phase transition from the Moore-Read state to a charge density wave state. By analyzing the energy spectrum, guiding center structure factors, and by adding weak pinning potentials, we show that this charge density wave is a unidirectional quantum Hall stripe, which has a periodicity of a few magnetic lengths and survives in the thermodynamic limit. We find smooth profiles for the guiding center occupation function that reveal the strong coupling nature of the array of chiral Luttinger liquids residing at the stripe edges.
