Phase transitions of bosonic fractional quantum Hall effect in topological flat bands

Abstract

We study the phase transitions of bosonic $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/2$ fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect in different topological lattice models under the interplay of onsite periodic potential and Hubbard repulsion. Through exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods, we demonstrate that the many-body ground state undergoes a continuous phase transition between bosonic FQH liquid and a trivial (Mott) insulator induced by the periodic potential, characterized by the smooth crossover of energy and entanglement entropy. When the Hubbard repulsion decreases, we claim that this bosonic FQH liquid would turn into a superfluid state with a direct energy level crossing and a discontinuous leap of off-diagonal long-range order.

Three-component fractional quantum Hall effect in topological flat bands

Tian-Sheng Zeng

We study the many-body ground states of three-component quantum particles in two prototypical topological lattice models under strong intercomponent and intracomponent repulsions. At band filling $\ensuremath{\nu}=3/4$ for hard-core bosons, we demonstrate the emergence of the three-component fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect characterized by the $\mathbf{K}$ matrix, through an exact diagonalization study of fourfold quasidegenerate ground states with a robust spectrum gap and the combined density-matrix renormalization group calculation of fractional drag charge pumping. Further, we formulate the topological characterization of FQH states of three-component Bose-Fermi mixtures at various fillings by the $\mathbf{K}$ matrix. Finally, we discuss the possible generalization of our approach to identify non-Abelian three-component spin-singlet FQH states.

SU(N) fractional quantum Hall effect in topological flat bands

Tian-Sheng Zeng, D. N. Sheng

We study $N$-component interacting particles (hardcore bosons and fermions) loaded in topological lattice models with $\mathrm{SU}(N)$-invariant interactions based on exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group method. By tuning the interplay of interspecies and intraspecies interactions, we demonstrate that a class of $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ fractional quantum Hall states can emerge at fractional filling factors $\ensuremath{\nu}=N/(N+1)$ for bosons [$\ensuremath{\nu}=N/(2N+1)$ for fermions] in the lowest Chern band, characterized by the nontrivial fractional Hall responses and the fractional charge pumping. Moreover, we establish a topological characterization based on the $\mathbf{K}$ matrix and discuss the close relationship to the fractional quantum Hall physics in topological flat bands with Chern number $N$.

Disorder-driven phase transitions in bosonic fractional quantum Hall liquids

Chao Han, Zhao Liu

We investigate the disorder-driven phase transitions in bosonic fractional quantum Hall liquids at filling factors $f=1/2$ and $f=1$ in the lowest Landau level. We use the evolution of ground-state entanglement entropy, fidelity susceptibility, and Hall conductance with increasing disorder strength to identify the underlying phase transitions. The critical disorder strengths obtained from these different quantities are consistent with each other, validating the reliability of our numerical calculations based on exact diagonalization. At $f=1/2$, we observe a clear transition from the bosonic Laughlin state to a trivial insulating phase. At $f=1$, we identify a direct phase transition from the non-Abelian bosonic Moore-Read state to a trivial insulating phase, although some signs of a disorder-induced intermediate fractional quantum Hall phase were recently reported for the $f=5/2$ fermionic cousin.

Weyl-type topological phase transitions in fractional quantum Hall like systems

We develop a method to characterize topological phase transitions for strongly correlated Hamiltonians defined on two-dimensional lattices based on the many-body Berry curvature. Our goal is to identify a class of quantum critical points between topologically nontrivial phases with fractionally quantized Hall (FQH) conductivity and topologically trivial gapped phases through the discontinuities of the many-body Berry curvature in the so-called flux Brillouin zone (fBZ), the latter being defined by imposing all possible twisted boundary conditions. For this purpose, we study the finite-size signatures of several quantum phase transitions between fractional Chern insulators and charge-ordered phases for two-dimensional lattices by evaluating the many-body Berry curvature numerically using exact diagonalization. We observe degeneracy points (nodes) of many-body energy levels at high-symmetry points in the fBZ, accompanied by diverging Berry curvature. We find a correspondence between the number and order of these nodal points, and the change of the topological invariants of the many-body ground states across the transition, in close analogy with Weyl nodes in noninteracting band structures. This motivates us to apply a scaling procedure, originally developed for noninteracting systems, for the Berry curvature at the nodal points. This procedure offers a useful tool for the classification of topological phase transitions in interacting systems harboring FQH like topological order.

Continuous phase transition between bosonic integer quantum Hall liquid and a trivial insulator: Evidence for deconfined quantum criticality

Tian-Sheng Zeng, D. N. Sheng, W. Zhu

The deconfined quantum critical point, a prototype Landau-forbidden transition, could exist, in principle, in the phase transitions involving a symmetry-protected topological phase; however, examples of such kinds of transitions in physical systems are rare beyond one-dimensional systems. Here, using a density-matrix renormalization-group calculation, we unveil a bosonic integer quantum Hall phase in a two-dimensional correlated honeycomb lattice, by full identification of its internal structure from the topological $\mathbf{K}$ matrix. Moreover, we demonstrate that imbalanced periodic chemical potentials can destroy the bosonic integer quantum Hall state and drive it into a featureless trivial (Mott) insulator, where all physical observables evolve smoothly across the critical point. At the critical point, the entanglement entropy reveals a characteristic scaling behavior, which is consistent with the critical field theory as an emergent ${\mathrm{QED}}_{3}$ with two flavors of Dirac fermions.

Fractional quantum Hall states of dipolar gases in Chern bands

Tian-Sheng Zeng, Lan Yin

We study fermions and hard-core bosons with long-range dipolar interactions at fractional fillings in a topological checkerboard lattice with short-range hoppings up to next-next-nearest neighbors [T. Neupert, L. Santos, C. Chamon, and C. Mudry, Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 236804 (2011)]. We consider the case that the dipoles are aligned in the perpendicular direction by an external field without the complication of anisotropic interaction. Using exact diagonalization, we find clear signatures of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states at filling factors 1/3 and 1/5 for fermions (1/2 and 1/4 for bosons) in the lowest Chern band with a robust spectrum gap at moderate dipolar interaction strength. The robustness of these FQH states against a long-range interaction tail and band flatness is investigated. When the dipolar interaction decreases, the fermionic FQH states turn into normal states, and the bosonic 1/4 FQH state turns into a superfluid state. The bosonic 1/2 FQH state survives even in the absence of the dipolar interaction, but vanishes when the hard core becomes a soft core with a critical on-site repulsion. In the thin torus limit, the static density structure factors indicate that the FQH state turns into a commensurate charge density wave state.
