Abstract

We investigate the nature of the quantum Hall liquid in a half-filled second Landau level ($n=1$) as a function of band mass anisotropy using numerical exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. We find increasing the mass anisotropy induces a quantum phase transition from the Moore-Read state to a charge density wave state. By analyzing the energy spectrum, guiding center structure factors, and by adding weak pinning potentials, we show that this charge density wave is a unidirectional quantum Hall stripe, which has a periodicity of a few magnetic lengths and survives in the thermodynamic limit. We find smooth profiles for the guiding center occupation function that reveal the strong coupling nature of the array of chiral Luttinger liquids residing at the stripe edges.

Role of disorder in half-filled high Landau levels

D. N. Sheng, Ziqiang Wang, Barry Friedman

We study the effects of disorder on the quantum Hall stripe phases in half-filled high Landau levels using exact numerical diagonalization. We show that, in the presence of weak disorder, a compressible, striped charge-density wave, becomes the true ground state. The projected electron-density profile resembles that of a smectic liquid. With increasing disorder strength W, we find that there exists a critical value, ${W}_{c}\ensuremath{\sim}{0.12e}^{2}/\ensuremath{\epsilon}\mathcal{l},$ where a transition/crossover to an isotropic phase with strong local electron-density fluctuations takes place. The many-body density of states are qualitatively distinguishable in these two phases and help elucidate the nature of the transition.

Quantum Hall charge density waves under anisotropy: from first-order to continuous transitions

Yuchi He, Kang Yang, M. O. Goerbig +1 more

We investigate the quantum Hall charge density wave states in the $N=2$ Landau level under mass anisotropy. In the absence of anisotropy, there are two first-order phase transitions between the Wigner crystal, the $2$-electron bubble phase, and the stripe phase. By adding mass anisotropy, our analytical and numerical studies show that the $2$-electron bubble phase disappears and the stripe phase significantly enlarges its domain in the phase diagram. Meanwhile, a regime of stripe crystals that may be observed experimentally is unveiled after the bubble phase gets out. Upon increase of the anisotropy, the energy of the phases at the transitions becomes progressively smooth as a function of the filling. We conclude that all first-order phase transitions are replaced by continuous phase transitions, providing a possible realisation of continuous quantum crystalline phase transitions.

Charge density waves and their transitions in anisotropic quantum Hall systems

Abstract In recent experiments, external anisotropy has been a useful tool to tune different phases and study their competitions. In this paper, we look at the quantum Hall charge density wave states in the N = 2 Landau level. ‘One-dimensional’ theory of the quantum Hall system

Emil J. Bergholtz, A. Karlhede

We consider the lowest Landau level on a torus as a function of its circumference L 1 . When L 1 → 0, the ground state at general rational filling fraction is a crystal with a gap—a Tao–Thouless state. For filling fractions ν = p /(2 pm + 1), these states are the limits of Laughlin's or Jain's wavefunctions describing the gapped quantum Hall states when L 1 → ∞ . For the half-filled Landau level, there is a transition to a Fermi sea of non-interacting neutral fermions (dipoles), or rather to a Luttinger liquid modification thereof, at L 1 ∼ 5 magnetic lengths. Using exact diagonalization we identify this state as a version of the Rezayi–Read state, and find that it develops continuously into the state that is believed to describe the observed metallic phase as L 1 → ∞ . Furthermore, the effective Landau level structure that emerges within the lowest Landau level is found to be a consequence of the magnetic symmetries.

Possible continuous transition from fractional quantum Hall to stripe phase at νe=7/3

Prashant Kumar, R. N. Bhatt

We study the phase diagram of the ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e}=7/3$ state in the $N=1$ Landau level in the presence of band mass anisotropy. Using the density matrix renormalization group on an infinite cylinder geometry, we find a continuous transition from the topologically ordered Laughlin fractional quantum Hall state to a stripe phase with a period of approximately five and a half magnetic lengths. The transition is driven by the condensation of the magnetoroton mode which becomes gapless at the critical point. We interpret the transition within the composite-boson theory as the onset of stripe order in a superfluid background, resulting from the roton mode going soft.

Non-Abelian ν=12 quantum Hall state in Γ8 valence band hole liquid

George Simion, Yuli B. Lyanda-Geller

In the search for states with non-Abelian statistics, we explore the fractional quantum Hall effect in a system of two-dimensional (2D) charge carrier holes. We propose a method of mapping states of holes confined to a finite width quantum well in a perpendicular magnetic field to states in a spherical shell geometry. We take into account strong coupling between the spin and motion of charge parallel and perpendicular to the 2D layer. This method gives the single-particle hole states used in the exact diagonalization of systems with a small number of holes in the presence of Coulomb interactions, density matrix renormalization group, and topological entanglement entropy calculations. The hole quantum Hall state at half filling of the ground state in a magnetic field near the crossing of single-hole states is likely the Moore-Read Pfaffian state.
