Abstract

Regarding microwave frequency standards based on trapped ions, we report on the determination of the hyperfine splittings and the Land\'e ${g}_{J}$ factors of $^{111,113}\mathrm{Cd}^{+}$. The hyperfine splittings and Land\'e ${g}_{J}$ factors of the $5s{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{2}{S}_{1/2}$ and $5p{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{2}{P}_{1/2,3/2}$ states of $^{111,113}\mathrm{Cd}^{+}$ are calculated using the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock scheme. Furthermore, the hyperfine splittings of the $5p{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{2}{P}_{3/2}$ state of $^{111,113}\mathrm{Cd}^{+}$ are derived based on the laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy. The ${\mathrm{Cd}}^{+}$ ions are confined in a linear Paul trap and sympathetically cooled by laser-cooled ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{+}$ ions. The calculated values and the derived values are cross-checked, thereby guaranteeing the reliability of our results. The results provided in this paper can improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the clock transition and the accuracy of the second-order Zeeman shift correction, thus further improving the stability and accuracy of the microwave frequency standards based on trapped $^{111,113}\mathrm{Cd}^{+}$ ions.

Determination of the Landé g J factor and Zeeman coefficients in ground-state 171 Yb + and their applications to quantum frequency standards

J. Z. Han, Benquan Lu, Yanmei Yu +5 more

We report the determination of the Land\'e ${g}_{J}$ factor and Zeeman coefficients for the ground-state of ${}^{171}{\mathrm{Yb}}^{+}$, relevant to microwave quantum frequency standards (QFSs). The ${g}_{J}$ factor is obtained by using two independent methods, the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock and multireference configuration-interaction methods, yielding a consistent value of $2.002\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}615(70)$. The first- and second-order Zeeman coefficients are determined as $14\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}010.78(49)\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{Hz}/\textmu{}\mathrm{T}$ and $31.0869(22)\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{mHz}/\textmu{}{\mathrm{T}}^{2}$, respectively, based on the calculated ${g}_{J}$ factor. These coefficients enable reduced magnetic-field-induced uncertainties, improving the accuracy of the ${}^{171}{\mathrm{Yb}}^{+}$ microwave QFSs. The results reported in this work also offer potential for improved constraints on variations in fundamental constants through frequency comparisons and advancing trapped-ion quantum computers based on the ground-state hyperfine splitting of ${}^{171}{\mathrm{Yb}}^{+}$.

Precision Determination of the Ground-State Hyperfine Splitting in a 113Cd+ Microwave Clock

S. N. Miao, Y. H. Zheng, Yiting Chen +3 more

As a candidate for the next generation microwave clock, microwave atomic clocks based on trapped ions are currently studied worldwide. Since 2010, our team at Tsinghua University has been committed to developing a high-performance$^{113}\text{Cd}^{+}$microwave ion clock. In 2021, the laser-cooled cadmium-ion microwave clock constructed in our laboratory demonstrated remarkable performance, with a short-term instability of$4.2\times 10^{-13}/\sqrt{\tau}$and a relative frequency uncertainty of$1.8\times 10^{-14}$, improving nearly three orders of magnitude compared to the result from JPL. The ground-state hyperfine splitting of$^{113}\text{Cd}^{+}$was determined to be 15199862855.02799(27) Hz, currently the most accurate measurement result for this transition frequency. Apart from that, we introduced the sympathetic cooling technology into the experiment of cadmium-ion microwave clock. Using$^{40}\text{Ca}^{+}$as the coolant ion, we obtained Ramsey patterns with a free evolution time of up to 100 seconds, ultimately improving the short-term instability of the system to$3.48\times 10^{-13}/\sqrt{\tau}$.

Radio-frequency-spectroscopy measurement of the Landé gJ factor of the 5D5/2 state of Ba + with a single trapped ion

Matthew Hoffman, Thomas W. Noel, Carolyn Auchter +4 more

We report an improved measurement of the Land\'e ${g}_{J}$ factor of the $5{D}_{5/2}$ state of singly ionized barium. Measurements were performed on single Doppler-cooled ${}^{138}$Ba${}^{+}$ ions in linear Paul traps using two similar, independent apparatuses. Transitions between Zeeman sublevels of the $6{S}_{1/2}$ and $5{D}_{5/2}$ states were driven with two independent, stabilized radio-frequency synthesizers using a dedicated electrode within each ion trap chamber. State detection within each Zeeman manifold was achieved with a frequency-stabilized fiber laser operating at 1.76 $\ensuremath{\mu}$m. By calculating the ratio of the two Zeeman splittings, and using the measured Land\'e ${g}_{J}$ factor of the $6{S}_{1/2}$ state, we find a value of 1.200 372$({4}_{\mathrm{stat}})({7}_{\mathrm{sys}})$ for ${g}_{{D}_{5/2}}$.

High-accuracy measurement of the ^113Cd^+ ground-state hyperfine splitting at the milli-Hertz level

Shiguang Wang, Jianwei Zhang, K. Miao +2 more

We have developed a microwave frequency standard based on the 15.2 GHz ground-stated hyperfine transition of (113)C(+) ions. Using a laser-cooled ion cloud trapped in a linear quadrupole Paul trap, the clock transition frequency is measured to be 15 199 862 855.0125(87) Hz, with an accuracy at the 10(-13) level. The main errors are from the microwave frequency reference used in the experiment. The precision is improved by nearly two orders of magnitude than that reported before.

Observation of the hyperfine structure of the 2S1/2−2D5/2 transition in 87Sr+

G. P. Barwood, K. Gao, Patrick Robert Gill +2 more

The hyperfine structure of the ${}^{2}{S}_{1/2}{\ensuremath{-}}^{2}{D}_{5/2}$ quadrupole transition at 674 nm in ${}^{87}{\mathrm{Sr}}^{+}$ has been observed. The ion was confined in a Paul trap and cooled using laser radiation at 422 and 1092 nm. The quadrupole transition was observed by monitoring quantum jumps in the 422-nm fluorescence. The odd isotope of strontium has ``clock'' transitions independent of the first-order Zeeman shift and the ${}^{2}{D}_{5/2}$ state hyperfine structure constants have been determined as ${A}_{{D}_{5/2}}=2.1743(14)\mathrm{MHz}$ and ${B}_{{D}_{5/2}}=49.11(6)\mathrm{MHz}.$ Standard uncertainties have been added in parentheses. These values allow the second-order Zeeman shifts to be calculated. The ${}^{88}{\mathrm{Sr}}^{+}{\ensuremath{-}}^{87}{\mathrm{Sr}}^{+}$ isotope shift for the 674-nm quadrupole transition has been measured to be 247.99(4) MHz.
