Abstract

Abstract We study the entanglement dynamics of thermofield double (TFD) states in integrable spin chains and quantum field theories. We show that, for a natural choice of the Hamiltonian eigenbasis, the TFD evolution may be interpreted as a quantum quench from an initial state which is low-entangled in the real-space representation and displays a simple quasiparticle structure. Based on a semiclassical picture analogous to the one developed for standard quantum quenches, we conjecture a formula for the entanglement dynamics, which is valid for both discrete and continuous integrable field theories, and expected to be exact in the scaling limit of large space and time scales. We test our conjecture in two prototypical examples of integrable spin chains, where numerical tests are possible. First, in the XY-model, we compare our predictions with exact results obtained by mapping the system to free fermions, finding excellent agreement. Second, we test our conjecture in the interacting XXZ Heisenberg model, against numerical iTEBD calculations. For the latter, we generally find good agreement, although, for some range of the system parameters and within the accessible simulation times, some small discrepancies are visible, which we attribute to finite-time effects.

Analytical results for the entanglement dynamics of disjoint blocks in the XY spin chain

Gilles Parez, Riccarda Bonsignori

Abstract The study of the dynamics of entanglement measures after a quench has become a very active area of research in the last two decades, motivated by the development of experimental techniques. However, exact results in this context are available in only very few cases. In this work, we present the proof of the quasiparticle picture for the dynamics of entanglement entropies for two disjoint blocks in the XY chain after a quantum quench. As a byproduct, we also prove the quasiparticle conjecture for the mutual information in that model. Our calculations generalize those presented in Fagotti and Calabrese (2008 Phys. Rev. A 78 010306 ) to the case where the correlation matrix is a block-Toeplitz matrix, and rely on the multidimensional stationary phase approximation in the scaling limit. We also test the quasiparticle predictions against exact numerical calculations, and find excellent agreement. In the case of three blocks, we show that the tripartite information vanishes when at least two blocks are adjacent.

Correlation and entanglement dynamics of free fermions in disguise

Dávid Szász-Schagrin, Pablo Bayona-Pena, Lorenzo Piroli +1 more

We study the nonequilibrium dynamics following a quantum quench in spin chains that can be solved via a mapping to free fermions in disguise. These models feature an exponential degeneracy of all energy eigenvalues, raising the question of the validity of the established framework describing the properties of integrable systems out of equilibrium. We present two main results. First, we develop an analytic method to compute the quasi-momentum distribution function characterizing the generalized Gibbs ensemble, and derive an analytic formula to compute the corresponding expectation values for special observables. Second, we adapt the standard formula for the entanglement growth based on the quasi-particle picture, discussing how our constructions do not explicitly make use of the zero-energy auxiliary free fermions responsible of the exponential degeneracies. We test our theoretical predictions against numerical tensor-network computations for different initial states and Hamiltonian parameters. For the local observables, we find excellent agreement. For the entanglement dynamics, we find small deviations suggesting that the standard quasi-particle picture is only approximately correct for the initial state considered. Our results represent a first step towards the extension of the established framework of integrable systems out of equilibrium to models hosting free fermions in disguise.

Entanglement dynamics after quantum quenches in generic integrable systems

Vincenzo Alba, Pasquale Calabrese

The time evolution of the entanglement entropy in non-equilibrium quantum systems provides crucial information about the structure of the time-dependent state. For quantum quench protocols, by combining a quasiparticle picture for the entanglement spreading with the exact knowledge of the stationary state provided by Bethe ansatz, it is possible to obtain an exact and analytic description of the evolution of the entanglement entropy. Here we discuss the application of these ideas to several integrable models. First we show that for non-interacting systems, both bosonic and fermionic, the exact time-dependence of the entanglement entropy can be derived by elementary techniques and without solving the dynamics. We then provide exact results for interacting spin chains that are carefully tested against numerical simulations. Finally, we apply this method to integrable one-dimensional Bose gases (Lieb-Liniger model) both in the attractive and repulsive regimes. We highlight a peculiar behaviour of the entanglement entropy due to the absence of a maximum velocity of excitations.

Quasiparticle dynamics of symmetry-resolved entanglement after a quench: Examples of conformal field theories and free fermions

Gilles Parez, Riccarda Bonsignori, Pasquale Calabrese

The time evolution of the entanglement entropy is a key concept to understand the structure of a nonequilibrium quantum state. In a large class of models, such evolution can be understood in terms of a semiclassical picture of moving quasiparticles spreading the entanglement throughout the system. However, it is not yet known how the entanglement splits between the sectors of an internal local symmetry of a quantum many-body system. Here, guided by the examples of conformal field theories and free-fermion chains, we show that the quasiparticle picture can be adapted to this goal, leading to a general conjecture for the charged entropies whose Fourier transform gives the desired symmetry-resolved entanglement ${S}_{n}(q)$. We point out two physically relevant effects that should be easily observed in atomic experiments: a delay time for the onset of ${S}_{n}(q)$ which grows linearly with $|\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}q|$ (the difference between the charge $q$ and its mean value) and an effective equipartition when $|\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}q|$ is much smaller than the subsystem size.

Spreading of entanglement and correlations after a quench with intertwined quasiparticles

Alvise Bastianello, Pasquale Calabrese

We extend the semiclassical picture for the spreading of entanglement and correlations to quantum quenches with several species of quasiparticles that have non-trivial pair correlations in momentum space. These pair correlations are, for example, relevant in inhomogeneous lattice models with a periodically-modulated Hamiltonian parameter. We provide explicit predictions for the spreading of the entanglement entropy in the space-time scaling limit. We also predict the time evolution of one- and two-point functions of the order parameter for quenches within the ordered phase. We test all our predictions against exact numerical results for quenches in the Ising chain with a modulated transverse field and we find perfect agreement.

Correlation and entanglement spreading in nested spin chains

Ranjan Modak, Lorenzo Piroli, Pasquale Calabrese

Abstract The past few years have witnessed the development of a comprehensive theory to describe integrable systems out of equilibrium, in which the Bethe ansatz formalism has been tailored to address specific problems arising in this context. While most of the work initially focused on the study of prototypical models such as the well-known Heisenberg chain, many theoretical results have been recently extended to a class of more complicated nested integrable systems, displaying different species of quasiparticles. Still, in the simplest context of quantum quenches, the vast majority of theoretical predictions have been numerically verified only in systems with an elementary Bethe ansatz description. In this work, we fill this gap and present a direct numerical test of some results presented in the recent literature for nested systems, focusing in particular on the Lai–Sutherland model. Using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization methods, we compute the spreading of both correlation functions and entanglement entropy after a quench from a simple class of product initial states. This allows us to test the validity of the nested version of a conjectured formula, based on the quasiparticle picture, for the growth of the entanglement entropy, and the Bethe ansatz predictions for the ‘light-cone’ velocity of correlation functions.
