Spreading of entanglement and correlations after a quench with intertwined quasiparticles

Abstract

We extend the semiclassical picture for the spreading of entanglement and correlations to quantum quenches with several species of quasiparticles that have non-trivial pair correlations in momentum space. These pair correlations are, for example, relevant in inhomogeneous lattice models with a periodically-modulated Hamiltonian parameter. We provide explicit predictions for the spreading of the entanglement entropy in the space-time scaling limit. We also predict the time evolution of one- and two-point functions of the order parameter for quenches within the ordered phase. We test all our predictions against exact numerical results for quenches in the Ising chain with a modulated transverse field and we find perfect agreement.

Entanglement links and the quasiparticle picture

Silvia N. Santalla, Giovanni Ramírez, Sudipto Singha Roy +2 more

The time evolution of a quantum state with short-range correlations after a quench to a one-dimensional critical Hamiltonian can be understood using the quasiparticle picture, which states that local entanglement spreads as if it was carried by quasiparticles which separate at a fixed speed. We extend the quasiparticle picture using the recently introduced link representation of entanglement, allowing us to apply it to initial states presenting long-range correlations. The entanglement links are current correlators, and therefore follow a wave equation on the appropriate configurational space which allows us to predict the time evolution of the entanglement entropies. Our results are checked numerically for free fermionic chains with different initial entanglement patterns.

Inhomogeneous quantum quenches

Spyros Sotiriadis, John Cardy

We study the problem of a quantum quench in which the initial state is the ground state of an inhomogeneous Hamiltonian, in two different models, conformal field theory and ordinary free field theory, which are known to exhibit thermalization of finite regions in the homogeneous case. We derive general expressions for the evolution of the energy flow and correlation functions, as well as the entanglement entropy in the conformal case. Comparison of the results from the two approaches in the regime of their common validity shows agreement up to a point further discussed. Unlike for the thermal analogue, the evolution in our problem is non-diffusive and can be physically interpreted using an intuitive picture of quasiparticles emitted from the initial time hypersurface and propagating semiclassically.

Correlation and entanglement spreading in nested spin chains

Ranjan Modak, Lorenzo Piroli, Pasquale Calabrese

Abstract The past few years have witnessed the development of a comprehensive theory to describe integrable systems out of equilibrium, in which the Bethe ansatz formalism has been tailored to address specific problems arising in this context. While most of the work initially focused on the study of prototypical models such as the well-known Heisenberg chain, many theoretical results have been recently extended to a class of more complicated nested integrable systems, displaying different species of quasiparticles. Still, in the simplest context of quantum quenches, the vast majority of theoretical predictions have been numerically verified only in systems with an elementary Bethe ansatz description. In this work, we fill this gap and present a direct numerical test of some results presented in the recent literature for nested systems, focusing in particular on the Lai–Sutherland model. Using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization methods, we compute the spreading of both correlation functions and entanglement entropy after a quench from a simple class of product initial states. This allows us to test the validity of the nested version of a conjectured formula, based on the quasiparticle picture, for the growth of the entanglement entropy, and the Bethe ansatz predictions for the ‘light-cone’ velocity of correlation functions.

Entanglement and diagonal entropies after a quench with no pair structure

Bruno Bertini, Elena Tartaglia, Pasquale Calabrese

Abstract A typical working condition in the study of quantum quenches is that the initial state produces a distribution of quasiparticle excitations with an opposite-momentum-pair structure. In this work we investigate the dynamical and stationary properties of the entanglement entropy after a quench from initial states which do not have such structure: instead of pairs of excitations they generate ν -plets of correlated excitations with . Our study is carried out focusing on a system of non-interacting fermions on the lattice. We study the time evolution of the entanglement entropy showing that the standard semiclassical formula is not applicable. We propose a suitable generalisation which correctly describes the entanglement entropy evolution and perfectly matches numerical data. We finally consider the relation between the thermodynamic entropy of the stationary state and the diagonal entropy, showing that when there is no pair structure their ratio depends on the details of the initial state and lies generically between 1/2 and 1.
