Abstract

Abstract The study of the dynamics of entanglement measures after a quench has become a very active area of research in the last two decades, motivated by the development of experimental techniques. However, exact results in this context are available in only very few cases. In this work, we present the proof of the quasiparticle picture for the dynamics of entanglement entropies for two disjoint blocks in the XY chain after a quantum quench. As a byproduct, we also prove the quasiparticle conjecture for the mutual information in that model. Our calculations generalize those presented in Fagotti and Calabrese (2008 Phys. Rev. A 78 010306 ) to the case where the correlation matrix is a block-Toeplitz matrix, and rely on the multidimensional stationary phase approximation in the scaling limit. We also test the quasiparticle predictions against exact numerical calculations, and find excellent agreement. In the case of three blocks, we show that the tripartite information vanishes when at least two blocks are adjacent.

Entanglement entropy of two disjoint blocks inXYchains

Maurizio Fagotti, Pasquale Calabrese

We study the Rényi entanglement entropies of two disjoint intervals in XY chains. We exploit the exact solution of the model in terms of free Majorana fermions and we show how to construct the reduced density matrix in the spin variables by taking the Jordan–Wigner string between the two blocks properly into account. From this we can evaluate any Rényi entropy of finite integer order. We study in detail critical XX and Ising chains and we show that the asymptotic results for large blocks agree with recent conformal field theory predictions if corrections to the scaling are included in the analysis correctly. We also report results for the gapped phase and after a quantum quench.

Entanglement dynamics of thermofield double states in integrable models

Gianluca Lagnese, Pasquale Calabrese, Lorenzo Piroli

Abstract We study the entanglement dynamics of thermofield double (TFD) states in integrable spin chains and quantum field theories. We show that, for a natural choice of the Hamiltonian eigenbasis, the TFD evolution may be interpreted as a quantum quench from an initial state which is low-entangled in the real-space representation and displays a simple quasiparticle structure. Based on a semiclassical picture analogous to the one developed for standard quantum quenches, we conjecture a formula for the entanglement dynamics, which is valid for both discrete and continuous integrable field theories, and expected to be exact in the scaling limit of large space and time scales. We test our conjecture in two prototypical examples of integrable spin chains, where numerical tests are possible. First, in the XY-model, we compare our predictions with exact results obtained by mapping the system to free fermions, finding excellent agreement. Second, we test our conjecture in the interacting XXZ Heisenberg model, against numerical iTEBD calculations. For the latter, we generally find good agreement, although, for some range of the system parameters and within the accessible simulation times, some small discrepancies are visible, which we attribute to finite-time effects.

Entangled multiplets, asymmetry, and quantum Mpemba effect in dissipative systems

Fabio Caceffo, Sara Murciano, Vincenzo Alba

Abstract Recently, the entanglement asymmetry emerged as an informative tool to understand dynamical symmetry restoration in out-of-equilibrium quantum many-body systems after a quantum quench. For integrable systems the asymmetry can be understood in the space-time scaling limit via the quasiparticle picture, as it was pointed out in Areset al(2023Nat. Commun.142036) . However, a quasiparticle picture for quantum quenches from generic initial states was still lacking. Here we conjecture a full-fledged quasiparticle picture for the charged moments of the reduced density matrix, which are the main ingredients to construct the asymmetry. Our formula works for quenches producing entangled multiplets of an arbitrary number of excitations. We benchmark our results in theXXspin chain. First, by using an elementary approach based on the multidimensional stationary phase approximation we provide anab initiorigorous derivation of the dynamics of the charged moments for the quench treated in Areset al(2023SciPost Phys.15089). Then, we show that the same results can be straightforwardly obtained within our quasiparticle picture. As a byproduct of our analysis, we obtain a general criterion ensuring a vanishing entanglement asymmetry at long times. Next, by using the Lindblad master equation, we study the effect of gain and loss dissipation on the entanglement asymmetry. Specifically, we investigate the fate of the so-called quantum Mpemba effect (QME) in the presence of dissipation. We show that dissipation can induce QME even if unitary dynamics does not show it, and we provide a quasiparticle-based interpretation of the condition for the QME.

Entanglement dynamics after quantum quenches in generic integrable systems

Vincenzo Alba, Pasquale Calabrese

The time evolution of the entanglement entropy in non-equilibrium quantum systems provides crucial information about the structure of the time-dependent state. For quantum quench protocols, by combining a quasiparticle picture for the entanglement spreading with the exact knowledge of the stationary state provided by Bethe ansatz, it is possible to obtain an exact and analytic description of the evolution of the entanglement entropy. Here we discuss the application of these ideas to several integrable models. First we show that for non-interacting systems, both bosonic and fermionic, the exact time-dependence of the entanglement entropy can be derived by elementary techniques and without solving the dynamics. We then provide exact results for interacting spin chains that are carefully tested against numerical simulations. Finally, we apply this method to integrable one-dimensional Bose gases (Lieb-Liniger model) both in the attractive and repulsive regimes. We highlight a peculiar behaviour of the entanglement entropy due to the absence of a maximum velocity of excitations.

Entanglement entropy of two disjoint intervals and spin structures in interacting chains in and out of equilibrium

Vanja Marić, Saverio Bocini, Maurizio Fagotti

A bstract We take the paradigm of interacting spin chains, the Heisenberg spin- $$ \frac{1}{2} $$ 1 2 XXZ model, as a reference system and consider interacting models that are related to it by Jordan-Wigner transformations and restrictions to sub-chains. An example is the fermionic analogue of the gapless XXZ Hamiltonian, which, in a continuum scaling limit, is described by the massless Thirring model. We work out the Rényi- α entropies of disjoint blocks in the ground state and extract the universal scaling functions describing the Rényi- α tripartite information in the limit of infinite lengths. We consider also the von Neumann entropy, but only in the limit of large distance. We show how to use the entropies of spin blocks to unveil the spin structures of the underlying massless Thirring model. Finally, we speculate about the tripartite information after global quenches and conjecture its asymptotic behaviour in the limit of infinite time and small quench. The resulting conjecture for the “residual tripartite information”, which corresponds to the limit in which the intervals’ lengths are infinitely larger than their (large) distance, supports the claim of universality recently made studying noninteracting spin chains. Our mild assumptions imply that the residual tripartite information after a small quench of the anisotropy in the gapless phase of XXZ is equal to − log 2.

Entanglement entropy of two disjoint intervals separated by one spin in a chain of free fermion*

L Brightmore, G P Gehér, Alexander Rudol'fovich Its +4 more

Abstract We calculate the entanglement entropy of a non-contiguous subsystem of a chain of free fermions. The starting point is a formula suggested by Jin and Korepin, arXiv: 1104.1004 , for the reduced density of states of two disjoint intervals with lattice sites P = {1, 2, …, m} ∪ {2m + 1, 2m + 2, …, 3m}, which applies to this model. As a first step in the asymptotic analysis of this system, we consider its simplification to two disjoint intervals separated just by one site, and we rigorously calculate the mutual information between these two blocks and the rest of the chain. In order to compute the entropy we need to study the asymptotic behaviour of an inverse Toeplitz matrix with Fisher–Hartwig symbol using the the Riemann–Hilbert method.
