Abstract

We theoretically calculate and experimentally measure the beyond-mean-field (BMF) equation of state in a coherently coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the regime where averaging of the interspecies and intraspecies coupling constants over the hyperfine composition of the single-particle dressed state predicts the exact cancellation of the two-body interaction. We show that with increasing the Rabi-coupling frequency Ω, the BMF energy density crosses over from the nonanalytic Lee-Huang-Yang scaling ∝n^{5/2} to an expansion in integer powers of density, where, in addition to a two-body BMF term ∝n^{2}sqrt[Ω], there emerges a repulsive three-body contribution ∝n^{3}/sqrt[Ω]. We experimentally evidence these two contributions, thanks to their different scaling with Ω, in the expansion of a Rabi-coupled two-component ^{39}K condensate in a waveguide. By studying the expansion with and without Rabi coupling, we reveal an important feature relevant for observing BMF effects and associated phenomena in mixtures with spin-asymmetric losses: Rabi coupling helps preserve the spin composition and thus prevents the system from drifting away from the point of the vanishing mean field.

Interaction control in coherently-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Sara Tiengo

This thesis investigates the response of coherently coupled spin-mixture Bose-Einstein condensates across a broad range of nonlinear regimes, extending from the deep-Rabi regime to the strongly nonlinear regime. On the theoretical side, collision processes induced and enhanced by strong coherent coupling are analyzed within a perturbative framework. Interaction channels arising from both mean-field and beyond-mean-field processes are identified, providing a microscopic description of the mechanisms through which few-body interactions contribute to the energy of the many-body system. On the experimental side, precise control over the interaction landscape is achieved in a 39-K spin mixture through improved stabilization of the magnetic field near 57 G, the operating point of the system. A feedforward compensation circuit is implemented to suppress magnetic-field noise, and Ramsey spectroscopy measurements demonstrate a twelvefold reduction in field fluctuations, corresponding to a residual root-mean-square noise level of a few tens of μG. This enhanced stability enables controlled measurements of the density-dependent equation of state of the coherently driven two-component condensate. As the density is increased, the system exhibits distinct interaction regimes. At low densities, the equation of state is dominated by repulsive two-body interactions. At intermediate densities, three-body contributions emerge and become increasingly relevant. At higher densities, the interaction energy shows an unusual saturation-like behavior. This behaviour reflects the nontrivial interplay between coherent coupling and interactions.

Saturating interaction in coherently coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Eid, R, S. Tiengo, Lévy, M +1 more

Rabi-coupled spinor Bose-Einstein condensates, with competing intra-and interspecies interactions, enable independent control of two-and three-body interactions. We show that coupling can also drive the system into a strongly nonlinear regime of saturating interaction. More precisely, the equation of state interpolates between low-and high-density regimes described by two different two-body scattering lengths. Interestingly, the transition can be determined by the strength of the coupling. We experimentally demonstrate this saturation phenomenon by measurements of the interaction energy of a Bose-Einstein condensate as a function of the detuning and of the strength of the Rabi coupling in spin mixtures of potassium 39.

Tunable Three-Body Interactions in Driven Two-Component Bose-Einstein Condensates

Alfred Hammond, L. Lavoine, Thomas Bourdel

We propose and demonstrate the appearance of an effective attractive three-body interaction in coherently driven two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. It originates from the spinor degree of freedom that is affected by a two-body mean-field shift of the driven transition frequency. Importantly, its strength can be controlled with the Rabi-coupling strength and it does not come with additional losses. In the experiment, the three-body interactions are adjusted to play a predominant role in the equation of state of a cigar-shaped trapped condensate. This is confirmed through two striking observations: a downshift of the radial breathing mode frequency and the radial collapses for positive values of the dressed-state scattering length.

Beyond-mean-field effects in mixtures: few-body and many-body aspects

Dmitry S. Petrov

The discovery of ultracold dilute liquids has significantly elevated our interest in various phenomena which go under the name of beyond-mean-field (BMF) physics. In these lecture notes we give an elementary introduction to the quantum stabilization and liquefaction of a collapsing weakly interacting Bose-Bose mixture. A detailed derivation of the leading BMF correction, also known as the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) term, in this system is presented in a manner suitable for further generalizations and extensions. Although the LHY term is a nonanalytic function of the density $n$, under certain conditions the leading BMF correction becomes analytic and can be expanded in integer powers of $n$, effectively introducing three-body and higher-order interactions. We discuss why and how well the Bogoliubov approach can predict these few-body observables.

Miscibility of dual-species Bose-Einstein condensates

Li He, Tianqi Zhang, Kexin Li +1 more

The miscibility of quantum liquids is an interesting topic in many-body physics, which has been intensively investigated in 3He-4He superfluids and the mixtures of ultracold atoms. In the context of dual species Bose-Einstein condensates, the mean-field description has been well established, according to which, the miscibility condition is density independent and determined only by the ratio of inter- and intra-species interaction strength. Recently, Nadion and Petrov proposed that [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 126 115301 ], in the vicinity of the mixing-demixing threshold, quantum fluctuations play an important role to affect the equilibrium stability, and as a result, the partially miscible state emerges. This new phase of quantum matter opens up new perspectives to explore the beyond mean-field effect in ultracold atomic gases. In this work, according to the equation of state taking the Lee-Huang-Yang correction into consideration, we investigate the ground state phase diagram of repulsive binary Bose mixtures in the interacting regime suffering a weak mean-field instability. Under the thermodynamic balance conditions, the phase boundaries between the immiscible state, partially miscible state and the homogenous state are determined. For the equal-mass case, these phase transitions only take place on condition that intra-species interactions are in an asymmetric form. In terms of interaction parameters, we explicitly derive analytical expressions of the phase boundaries, which are appropriate to describe the transitions in sufficiently dilute atomic gases. At the quantum critical point, where the partially miscible state terminates, the susceptibility tensor of the density response exhibits a divergent behavior. For the unequal-mass case, the beyond-mean-field equation of state cannot be written in a compact form, thus the determination of the phase boundaries is more involved. By expanding the Lee-Huang-Yang energy expression to the terms linear in the concentration of the minority species, we analytically obtain the threshold density for the partially miscible transition. We also propose a discriminant function, from which the configuration of the partially miscible state can be identified for the given mass ratio and interaction strength. Applications of these theoretical results to experimental systems, such as sodium, potassium, and rubidium gases, are presented.
