Efficient linear-optical generation of a multipartite W state

Abstract

A scheme is presented for generation of a multipartite $W$ state for an arbitrary number of qubits. Based on a recent proposal of entanglement without touching, it serves to demonstrate the potential of particle indistinguishability as a useful resource of entanglement for practical applications. The devised scheme is efficient in design, meaning that it is built with linear optics without the need for auxiliary particles nor measurements. Yet, the success probability is shown to be highly competitive compared with the existing proposals (i.e., decreases polynomially with the number of qubits) and remains insensitive to particle statistics (i.e., has the same efficiency for bosons and fermions).

Arbitrary entanglement of three qubits via linear optics

Paweł Błasiak, Ewa Borsuk, Marcin Markiewicz

We present a linear-optical scheme for generating an arbitrary state of three qubits. It requires only three independent particles in the input and post-selection of the coincidence type at the output. The success probability of the protocol is equal for any desired state. Furthermore, the optical design remains insensitive to particle statistics (bosons, fermions or anyons). This approach builds upon the no-touching paradigm, which demonstrates the utility of particle indistinguishability as a resource of entanglement for practical applications.

Entangling three qubits without ever touching

Paweł Błasiak, Marcin Markiewicz

All identical particles are inherently correlated from the outset, regardless of how far apart their creation took place. In this paper, this fact is used for extraction of entanglement from independent particles unaffected by any interactions. Specifically, we are concerned with operational schemes for generation of all tripartite entangled states, essentially the GHZ state and the W state, which prevent the particles from touching one another over the entire evolution. The protocols discussed in the paper require only three particles in linear optical setups with equal efficiency for boson, fermion or anyon statistics. Within this framework indistinguishability of particles presents itself as a useful resource of entanglement accessible for practical applications.

Efficient linear optical generation of a multipartite W state via a quantum eraser

Yong‐Su Kim, Young‐Wook Cho, Hyang‐Tag Lim +1 more

Entanglement among multiple particles is a keystone for not only fundamental research on quantum information but also various practical quantum information applications. In particular, the $W$ state has attracted a lot of attention due to the robustness against particle loss and the applications in multiparty quantum communication. However, it is challenging to generate a photonic $W$ state with a large number of photons, since the $N$-photon $W$ state requires superposition among $N$ probability amplitudes. In this paper, we propose an efficient linear optical scheme to generate $N$-photon $W$ states via quantum erasure. The success probability of our protocol polynomially decreases as the number of photons increases. We also discuss the experimental feasibility of our protocol and anticipate that one can efficiently generate tens of photonic $W$ states with our scheme using currently available quantum photonics technologies.

Linear Optical Schemes to Postselect High-Dimensional Dicke States

Daniel Bhatti, William J. Munro, Seungbeom Chin

Multipartite entanglement is an essential quantum resource for various distributed quantum applications. One promising method for preparing multipartite entanglement is to interfere independent photons at linear optical interference setups. While heralding the successful interference and thereby the state generation is often costly, postselecting entangled states provides an achievable alternative in this framework. We introduce a family of interference schemes for postselecting symmetric qudit Dicke states, useful resources in quantum communication and variational quantum computing. We present schemes with and without ancillary photons and show that using ancillary photons can exceed the upper bound on the success probability of schemes without ancillary photons. Our results accommodate a wide range of linear optical schemes, providing multiple viable approaches for postselecting Dicke states.

Generation of Genuine Multipartite Entangled States via Indistinguishability of Identical Particles

Kobra Mahdavipour, Farzam Nosrati, Stefania Sciara +2 more

Indistinguishability of identical particles is a resource for quantum information processing and has been utilized to generate entanglement from independent particles that spatially overlap only at the detection stage. Here, we introduce a controllable scheme capable of generating via three steps, i.e., initialization, deformation, and postselection, different classes of multipartite entangled states starting from a product state of N spatially distinguishable identical qubits. While our scheme is generalizable to any class of entangled bosonic and fermionic systems, we provide an explicit recipe for the generation of W , Dicke, GHZ, and cluster states, which are resource states for quantum information processing. Using graph-based representations within the framework of spatially localized operations and classical communication (sLOCC), we mathematically demonstrate a direct translation of the generation schemes of specific entangled states into colored, complex, and weighted digraphs, each corresponding to a given experimental setup. We also show that this graph-theoretical approach allows for the optimization of the generation efficiency of specific multipartite entangled states by exploring a variety of generation schemes. The presented theoretical approach, while already implementable with current linear optics architectures, has the potential to bring clear advantages over existing technologies, such as in quantum computing search algorithms and in the design of new experiments in quantum optics or other platforms. N identical particles and one particle to entangle them all

Bruno Bellomo, Rosario Lo Franco, Giuseppe Compagno

In quantum information, $W$ states are a central class of multipartite entangled states because of their robustness against noise and their use in many quantum processes. Their generation, however, remains a demanding task whose difficulty increases with the number of particles. We report a simple scalable conceptual scheme where a single particle in an ancilla mode works as an entanglement catalyst of the $W$ state for other $N$ separated identical particles. A crucial aspect of the scheme, which exploits basically spatial indistinguishability, is its universality, being applicable without essential changes to both bosons and fermions. Our proposal represents a paradigm within the experimental preparation of many-particle entanglement based on quantum indistinguishability.
