Abstract

We theoretically generalize a systematic language to describe the phase-imprinting technique to investigate the dynamical generation of solitons in a one-dimensional Raman-type spin-orbit-coupled Fermi superfluid. We check our method with the simulation of time-dependent Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations and find that our method not only can generate stable dark and even gray solitons in a conventional Fermi superfluid by controlling the transferred phase jump but also is feasible to create a stable dark soliton in both BCS and topological states of a spin-orbit-coupled Fermi superfluid. We also discuss the physical implication of our method.

Proper phase imprinting method for a dark soliton excitation in a superfluid Fermi mixture

Krzysztof Sacha, Dominique Delande

It is common knowledge that a dark soliton can be excited in an ultra-cold atomic gas by means of the phase imprinting method. We show that, for a superfluid fermionic mixture, the standard phase imprinting procedure applied to both components fails to create a state with symmetry properties identical to those of the dark soliton solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. To produce a dark soliton in the BCS regime, a single component of the Fermi mixture should be phase imprinted only.

Soliton-induced Majorana fermions in a one-dimensional atomic topological superfluid

Xia-Ji Liu

We theoretically investigate the behavior of dark solitons in a one-dimensional spin-orbit coupled atomic Fermi gas in harmonic traps by solving self-consistently the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations. The dark soliton---to be created by phase imprinting in future experiments---is characterized by a real order parameter, which changes sign at a point node and hosts localized Andreev bound states near the node. By considering both cases of a single soliton and multiple solitons, we find that the energy of these bound states decreases to zero when the system is tuned to enter the topological superfluid phase by increasing an external Zeeman field. As a result, two Majorana fermions emerge in the vicinity of each soliton, in addition to the well-known Majorana fermions at the trap edges associated with the nontrivial topology of the superfluid. We propose that the soliton-induced Majorana fermions can be directly observed by using spatially resolved radio-frequency spectroscopy or indirectly probed by measuring the density profile at the point node. For the latter, the deep minimum in the density profile will disappear due to the occupation of the soliton-induced zero-energy Majorana fermion modes. Our prediction could be tested in a resonantly interacting spin-orbit coupled ${}^{40}\text{K}$ Fermi gas confined in a two-dimensional optical lattice.

Traveling Majorana Solitons in a Low-Dimensional Spin-Orbit-Coupled Fermi Superfluid

Peng Zou, Joachim Brand, Xia-Ji Liu +1 more

We investigate traveling solitons of a one- or two-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled Fermi superfluid in both topologically trivial and nontrivial regimes by solving the static and time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We find a critical velocity v_{h} for traveling solitons that is much smaller than the value predicted using the Landau criterion due to spin-orbit coupling. Above v_{h}, our time-dependent simulations in harmonic traps indicate that traveling solitons decay by radiating sound waves. In the topological phase, we predict the existence of peculiar Majorana solitons, which host two Majorana fermions and feature a phase jump of π across the soliton, irrespective of the velocity of travel. These unusual properties of Majorana solitons may open an alternative way to manipulate Majorana fermions for fault-tolerant topological quantum computations.

Solitons in a superfluid Fermi gas

Mauro Antezza

We will discuss recent results on the theoretical and experimental investigations on solitons in a superfluid Fermi gas along the BCS-BEC crossover. On the theory side, by solving the Bogoliubov de Gennes equations and looking for real and odd solutions for the order parameter, it has been shown that a dark soliton at unitarity posses a large density contrast and fermionic bound states. The superfluid gap is found to be significantly quenched by the presence of the soliton due to the occurrence of Andreev fermionic bound states localized near the nodal plane of the order parameter. By solving the time dependent Bogoliubov de Gennes equations, also the decay and collisions of dark solitons has been investigated. Recently, a cascade of Solitonic Excitations in a Superfluid Fermi gas has been experimentally observed.

Traveling dark solitons in superfluid Fermi gases

Renyuan Liao, Joachim Brand

Families of dark solitons exist in superfluid Fermi gases. The energy-velocity dispersion and number of depleted particles completely determine the dynamics of dark solitons on a slowly varying background density. For the unitary Fermi gas, we determine these relations from general scaling arguments and conservation of local particle number. We find solitons to oscillate sinusoidally at the trap frequency reduced by a factor of $1/\sqrt{3}$. Numerical integration of the time-dependent Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation determines spatial profiles and soliton-dispersion relations across the BEC-BCS crossover, and proves consistent with the scaling relations at unitarity.
