Abstract

High fidelity two-qubit gates are fundamental for scaling up the superconducting qubit number. We use two qubits coupled via a frequency-tunable coupler which can adjust the coupling strength, and demonstrate the CZ gate using two different schemes, adiabatic and diabatic methods. The Clifford based randomized benchmarking (RB) method is used to assess and optimize the CZ gate fidelity. The fidelities of adiabatic and diabatic CZ gates are 99.53(8)% and 98.72(2)%, respectively. We also analyze the errors induced by the decoherence. Comparing to 30 ns duration time of adiabatic CZ gate, the duration time of diabatic CZ gate is 19 ns, revealing lower incoherence error rate r ′ incoherent , int = 0.0197 ( 5 ) compared to r incoherent, int = 0.0223(3).

Fast CZ gate via energy-level engineering in superconducting qubits with a tunable coupler

Benzheng Yuan, Chaojie Zhang, Chuanbing Han +8 more

In superconducting quantum circuits, decoherence errors in qubits constitute a critical factor limiting quantum gate performance. To mitigate decoherence-induced gate infidelity, rapid implementation of quantum gates is essential. Here we propose a scheme for rapid controlled-Z (CZ) gate implementation through energy-level engineering, which leverages Rabi oscillations between the $\left|11\right\rangle$ state and the non-computational state in a tunable-coupler architecture. Numerical simulations achieved a $\mathrm{22~ns}$ nonadiabatic CZ gate with fidelity over $99.99\%$. We further investigated the performance of the CZ gate in the presence of anharmonicity offsets. The results demonstrate that a high-fidelity CZ gate with an error rate below $10^{-4}$ remains achievable even with finite anharmonicity variations. Furthermore, the detrimental impact of spectator qubits in different quantum states on the fidelity of CZ gate is effectively suppressed by incorporating a tunable coupler. This scheme exhibits potential for extending the circuit execution depth constrained by coherence time limitations.

Unlocking a fast adiabatic CZ gate and exact residual $ZZ$ cancellation between fixed-frequency transmons using a floating tunable coupler

Angela Q. Chen, Xian Wu, Sarah Strong +1 more

Tunable couplers in superconducting qubit architectures enable strong qubit-qubit interactions for two-qubit gates while suppressing unwanted coupling during single-qubit operations. However, achieving low error rates for fast two-qubit gates remains challenging, as suppressing leakage and non-adiabatic errors typically requires specialized qubit, coupler, or pulse designs, often at the expense of an idling $ZZ=0$ condition. In this work, we demonstrate that a symmetric floating tunable coupler provides a natural platform for fast, high-fidelity adiabatic controlled-Z (CZ) gates. Its favorable energy-level structure eliminates the conventional trade-off between rapid conditional-phase accumulation and adiabatic evolution while preserving exact cancellation of residual $ZZ$ interaction at idling. This architecture exhibits intrinsic robustness to non-adiabatic transitions, even under simple flux modulation waveforms. To push performance at short gate durations, where maintaining adiabaticity becomes more challenging despite the favorable level structure, we introduce pulse-shaping techniques based on the instantaneous adiabatic factor that further suppress non-adiabatic errors. We experimentally realize a 24 ns adiabatic CZ gate with fidelity exceeding 99.9% and stable operation over several hours.

Realization of High-Fidelity Controlled-Phase Gates in Extensible Superconducting Qubits Design with a Tunable Coupler

Yangsen Ye, Sirui Cao, Yulin Wu +20 more

High-fidelity two-qubit gates are essential for the realization of large-scale quantum computation and simulation. Tunable coupler design is used to reduce the problem of parasitic coupling and frequency crowding in many-qubit systems and thus thought to be advantageous. Here we design an extensible 5-qubit system in which center transmon qubit can couple to every four near-neighboring qubits via a capacitive tunable coupler and experimentally demonstrate high-fidelity controlled-phase (CZ) gate by manipulating central qubit and one near-neighboring qubit. Speckle purity benchmarking and cross entropy benchmarking are used to assess the purity fidelity and the fidelity of the CZ gate. The average purity fidelity of the CZ gate is 99.69±0.04% and the average fidelity of the CZ gate is 99.65±0.04%, which means that the control error is about 0.04%. Our work is helpful for resolving many challenges in implementation of large-scale quantum systems.

High-precision pulse calibration of tunable couplers for high-fidelity two-qubit gates in superconducting quantum processors

Tian-Ming Li, Jiachi Zhang, Bing-Jie Chen +23 more

For superconducting quantum processors, stable high-fidelity two-qubit operations depend on precise flux control of the tunable coupler. However, the pulse distortion poses a significant challenge to the control precision. Current calibration methods, which often rely on microwave crosstalk or additional readout resonators for coupler excitation and readout, tend to be cumbersome and inefficient, especially when couplers only have flux control. Here, we introduce and experimentally validate a pulse calibration scheme that exploits the strong coupling between qubits and couplers, eliminating the need for extra coupler readout and excitation. Our method directly measures the short-time and long-time step responses of the coupler flux pulse transient, enabling us to apply predistortion to subsequent signals using fast Fourier transformation and deconvolution. This approach not only simplifies the calibration process, but also significantly improves the precision and stability of the flux control. We demonstrate the efficacy of our method through the implementation of diabatic controlled-$Z$ (cz) and $i$swap gates with fidelities of $99.61\mathrm{%}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04\mathrm{%}$ and $99.82\mathrm{%}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02\mathrm{%}$, respectively, as well as a series of diabatic controlled-phase gates with high fidelities characterized by cross-entropy benchmarking. The consistency and robustness of our technique are further validated by the reduction in pulse distortion and phase error observed across multilayer cz gates. These results underscore the potential of our calibration and predistortion method to enhance the performance of two-qubit gates in superconducting quantum processors.

Above 99.9% Fidelity Single-Qubit Gates, Two-Qubit Gates, and Readout in a Single Superconducting Quantum Device

Fabian Marxer, Jakub Mrożek, Joona Andersson +64 more

Achieving high-fidelity single-qubit gates, two-qubit gates, and qubit readout is critical for building scalable, error-corrected quantum computers. However, device parameters that enhance one operation often degrade the others, making simultaneous optimization challenging. Here, we demonstrate that careful tuning of qubit-coupler coupling strengths in a superconducting circuit with two transmon qubits coupled via a tunable coupler enables high-fidelity single- and two-qubit gates, without compromising readout performance. Furthermore, we introduce a new calibration protocol for diabatic controlled- Z gates, phased-averaged leakage error amplification (PALEA), which enables efficient suppression of coherent gate errors and leakage to noncomputational states. Using PALEA in combination with careful tuning of qubit-coupler coupling strengths, we achieve a 40 h-averaged CZ gate fidelity of 99.93 %, simultaneous single-qubit gate fidelities of 99.98 %, and readout fidelities over 99.94 % in a single device. Our results demonstrate a viable path toward scaling up superconducting quantum processors while maintaining consistently high gate and readout fidelities.

Building a scalable universal high-performance quantum processor is a formidable challenge. In particular, the problem of realizing fast high-perfomance two-qubit gates of high-fidelity remains needful. Here we propose a building block for a scalable quantum processor consisting of two transmons and a tunable three-mode coupler allowing for a ZZ interaction control. We experimentally demonstrate the native CZ gate with the pulse duration of 60 ns achieving the two-qubit gate fidelity above 98%, limited mostly by qubit coherence time. Numerical simulations show that by optimizing the gate duration the fidelity can be pushed over 99.97%.
