Abstract

In superconducting quantum circuits, decoherence errors in qubits constitute a critical factor limiting quantum gate performance. To mitigate decoherence-induced gate infidelity, rapid implementation of quantum gates is essential. Here we propose a scheme for rapid controlled-Z (CZ) gate implementation through energy-level engineering, which leverages Rabi oscillations between the $\left|11\right\rangle$ state and the non-computational state in a tunable-coupler architecture. Numerical simulations achieved a $\mathrm{22~ns}$ nonadiabatic CZ gate with fidelity over $99.99\%$. We further investigated the performance of the CZ gate in the presence of anharmonicity offsets. The results demonstrate that a high-fidelity CZ gate with an error rate below $10^{-4}$ remains achievable even with finite anharmonicity variations. Furthermore, the detrimental impact of spectator qubits in different quantum states on the fidelity of CZ gate is effectively suppressed by incorporating a tunable coupler. This scheme exhibits potential for extending the circuit execution depth constrained by coherence time limitations.

Fast CZ gate in hybrid fluxonium-transmon systems with tunable couplers

Peng Xu, Yunlong Wang, Yuechen Mu +4 more

Hybrid superconducting architectures combining different types of qubits offer a promising platform for exploiting their complementary advantages, yet high-fidelity entangling gates remain challenging because of strong nonlinearities and residual qubit-qubit interactions. Here, we propose a high-fidelity controlled-Z (CZ) gate for a hybrid circuit comprising a fluxonium qubit, a fixed-frequency transmon qubit, and a flux-tunable transmon coupler. By modulating only the external magnetic flux applied to the coupler, the qubit-qubit interaction is dynamically engineered for conditional-phase accumulation while the residual interaction is suppressed at idle, mitigating spectator-induced errors. We employ a low-dimensional Fourier-cosine pulse parameterization and a physically motivated cost function to independently suppress conditional-phase errors and leakage from the computational subspace. Numerical simulations demonstrate that a microwave-free CZ gate can be realized within $25 \mathrm{ns}$, with an average gate fidelity exceeding $99.99\%$ and leakage below $10^{-5}$. Using experimentally relevant superconducting-qubit parameters and accounting for decoherence, the proposed scheme maintains a CZ-gate fidelity of approximately $99.9\%$. We further extend the analysis to larger coupled architectures and find that the CZ-gate infidelity remains below $10^{-4}$ in the presence of spectator qubits. These results establish single-parameter flux control as a simple and robust approach for realizing high-fidelity entangling gates in heterogeneous superconducting quantum architectures.

Unlocking a fast adiabatic CZ gate and exact residual $ZZ$ cancellation between fixed-frequency transmons using a floating tunable coupler

Angela Q. Chen, Xian Wu, Sarah Strong +1 more

Tunable couplers in superconducting qubit architectures enable strong qubit-qubit interactions for two-qubit gates while suppressing unwanted coupling during single-qubit operations. However, achieving low error rates for fast two-qubit gates remains challenging, as suppressing leakage and non-adiabatic errors typically requires specialized qubit, coupler, or pulse designs, often at the expense of an idling $ZZ=0$ condition. In this work, we demonstrate that a symmetric floating tunable coupler provides a natural platform for fast, high-fidelity adiabatic controlled-Z (CZ) gates. Its favorable energy-level structure eliminates the conventional trade-off between rapid conditional-phase accumulation and adiabatic evolution while preserving exact cancellation of residual $ZZ$ interaction at idling. This architecture exhibits intrinsic robustness to non-adiabatic transitions, even under simple flux modulation waveforms. To push performance at short gate durations, where maintaining adiabaticity becomes more challenging despite the favorable level structure, we introduce pulse-shaping techniques based on the instantaneous adiabatic factor that further suppress non-adiabatic errors. We experimentally realize a 24 ns adiabatic CZ gate with fidelity exceeding 99.9% and stable operation over several hours.

Realization of Fast All-Microwave Controlled-Z Gates with a Tunable Coupler

Shaowei Li, Daojin Fan, Ming Gong +29 more

The development of high-fidelity two-qubit quantum gates is essential for digital quantum computing. Here, we propose and realize an all-microwave parametric controlled-Z (CZ) gates by coupling strength modulation in a superconducting Transmon qubit system with tunable couplers. After optimizing the design of the tunable coupler together with the control pulse numerically, we experimentally realized a 100 ns CZ gate with high fidelity of 99.38% ± 0.34% and the control error being 0.1%. We note that our CZ gates are not affected by pulse distortion and do not need pulse correction, providing a solution for the real-time pulse generation in a dynamic quantum feedback circuit. With the expectation of utilizing our all-microwave control scheme to reduce the number of control lines through frequency multiplexing in the future, our scheme draws a blueprint for the high-integrable quantum hardware design.

Realization of High-Fidelity CZ and Z Z -Free iSWAP Gates with a Tunable Coupler

Youngkyu Sung, Leon Ding, Jochen Braumüller +14 more

High-fidelity two-qubit gates at scale are a key requirement to realize the full promise of quantum computation and simulation. The advent and use of coupler elements to tunably control two-qubit interactions has improved operational fidelity in many-qubit systems by reducing parasitic coupling and frequency crowding issues. Nonetheless, two-qubit gate errors still limit the capability of near-term quantum applications. The reason, in part, is the existing framework for tunable couplers based on the dispersive approximation does not fully incorporate three-body multi-level dynamics, which is essential for addressing coherent leakage to the coupler and parasitic longitudinal ($ZZ$) interactions during two-qubit gates. Here, we present a systematic approach that goes beyond the dispersive approximation to exploit the engineered level structure of the coupler and optimize its control. Using this approach, we experimentally demonstrate CZ and $ZZ$-free iSWAP gates with two-qubit interaction fidelities of $99.76 \pm 0.07$% and $99.87 \pm 0.23$%, respectively, which are close to their $T_1$ limits.

Tunable Coupler for Realizing a Controlled-Phase Gate with Dynamically Decoupled Regime in a Superconducting Circuit

X. Li, T. Cai, H. Yan +13 more

Controllable interaction between superconducting qubits is desirable for large-scale quantum computation and simulation. Here, based on a theoretical proposal by Yan et al. [Phys. Rev. Appl. 10, 054061 (2018)] we experimentally demonstrate a simply designed and flux-controlled tunable coupler with a continuous tunability by adjusting the coupler frequency, which can completely turn off adjacent superconducting qubit coupling. Utilizing the tunable interaction between two qubits via the coupler, we implement a different type of controlled-phase (cz) gate with ``dynamically decoupled regime,'' which allows the qubit-qubit coupling to be only ``on'' at the usual operating point while dynamically ``off'' during the tuning process of one qubit frequency into and out of the operating point. This scheme not only efficiently suppresses the leakage out of the computational subspace, but also allows for the acquired two-qubit phase being geometric at the operating point. We achieve an average cz gate fidelity of $98.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6\mathrm{%}$, which is dominantly limited by qubit decoherence. The demonstrated tunable coupler provides a desirable tool to suppress adjacent qubit coupling and is suitable for large-scale quantum computation and simulation.

Remote Adiabatic Controlled-Z Gate between Distant Superconducting Qubits

Si-Yu Xu, Yi-Rong Jin, Wen-Gang Zhang +1 more

Direct entangling gates between spatially separated qubits are a key capability for modular quantum computing. They enable nonlocal quantum circuits to be executed across different processor modules, thereby alleviating single-chip scaling constraints and expanding the effective connectivity of the system. Here, we propose and numerically investigate a remote adiabatic controlled-Z gate between two frequency-tunable superconducting qubits connected by a multi-mode coaxial cable. The cable-mediated interaction enables the gate to be implemented without additional tunable couplers, preserving a simple circuit architecture. For a 30-cm cable, simulations incorporating ten standing-wave modes yield an optimized gate infidelity of $4.71\times10^{-7}$ with a duration of 376.7 ns in the absence of decoherence. The gate maintains high fidelity under qubit-frequency fluctuations and millimeter-scale cable-length variations. Calculations for 50- and 100-cm cable situations demonstrate its potential for even larger cryogenic systems. These results provide a promising approach to extending high-fidelity quantum operations beyond individual chips and toward scalable, interconnected superconducting quantum processors.
