Abstract

Dissimilar notions of quantum correlations have been established, each being motivated through particular applications in quantum information science and each competing for being recognized as the most relevant measure of quantumness. In this contribution, we experimentally realize a form of quantum correlation that exists even in the absence of entanglement and discord. We certify the presence of such quantum correlations via negativities in the regularized two-mode Glauber-Sudarshan function. Our data show compatibility with an incoherent mixture of orthonormal photon-number states, ruling out quantum coherence and other kinds of quantum resources. By construction, the quantumness of our state is robust against dephasing, thus requiring fewer experimental resources to ensure stability. In addition, we theoretically show how multimode entanglement can be activated based on the generated, nonentangled state. Therefore, we implement a robust kind of nonclassical photon-photon correlated state with useful applications in quantum information processing.

Quantifying quantum correlations beyond entanglement via robust photon hopping in an optomechanical system

Y. Lahlou, Bouchra Maroufi, Mohammed Daoud A

Quantum correlations beyond quantum entanglement represent vital resources in quantum information processing as well as in quantum computation. In fact, both quantum entanglement and quantum correlation are the same when the quantum system is described by pure states. However, this is not exactly the case when general mixed states are considered. In order to clarify this, a simple model has been proposed for the production and quantification of these quantum correlations between two mechanical resonators that are macroscopic in two Fabry–Pérot cavities optomechanical coupled by the photon hopping process. In this model, we analyze and investigate the quantification of the quantum correlation beyond the entanglement between the mechanical modes. We determine the global covariance matrix of the model from which we derive the expression of the entropy of formation ([Formula: see text]) as well as the Gaussian quantum discord ([Formula: see text]), which quantify the amount of quantum entanglement and quantum correlations, respectively. The analysis based on these two quantum correlations quantifiers shows that quantum discord is more appropriate to characterize the quantum correlations between the mechanical modes in an optomechanical quantum system in the presence of robust photon hopping.

Experimental determination of tripartite quantum discord

Vaishali Gulati, Shaileyee Bhowmick, Tim Byrnes +2 more

Quantum discord is a measure of nonclassical correlations in quantum systems. While the bipartite version of quantum discord is experimentally well-studied, the multipartite version has never been convincingly measured. In this study, we experimentally investigate tripartite quantum discord using an NMR quantum information processor. Building on a theoretical framework for conditional projective measurements and quantum conditional mutual information, we quantify the tripartite quantum discord and its contributions in different three-qubit states such as the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) and Werner (W) states as well as classical mixtures of biseparable Bell states, and classical mixtures of product states. The experiments employed full quantum state tomography and temporal averaging to prepare mixed states, achieving fidelities exceeding 95%. Our results confirm that quantum discord persists even in the absence of entanglement, highlighting its utility as a broader indicator of quantum correlations. Furthermore, we validate the nonconvexity of discord, confirming that classical mixtures of zero-discord states can exhibit nonzero discord. This experimentally confirms that quantum discord does not fit into the framework of resource theory. This work establishes a robust methodology for measuring quantum discord, illuminating the structure and distribution of quantum correlations in multipartite systems.

Quantumness of correlations in a nondegenerate three-level laser

I. Mouhti, Ahmed Tirbiyine, Mohammed Khenfouch +2 more

In this paper, we analyze, under realistic experimental conditions, entanglement and quantum discord in a two-mode Gaussian state [Formula: see text] coupled to a thermal reservoir. The mode [Formula: see text]([Formula: see text]) is generated during the first(second) transition of a nondegenerate three-level laser. The gain medium of the laser is a set of three-level atoms in a cascade configuration. The atoms are prepared initially in a superposition of the upper and lower levels. In the good cavity-limit, applying the master equation we obtain the covariance matrix of the state [Formula: see text] at steady-state. We use the entanglement of formation and the Gaussian quantum discord to quantify entanglement and quantum correlations beyond entanglement, respectively. The two indicators of nonclassicality are defined by means of the von Neumann entropy, and obtained as functions of the parameters characterizing the physical and environmental parameters of the state [Formula: see text], i.e. atomic coherence, dissipation and thermal photon number. As results, we find that maximum entanglement and discord could be achieved by adjusting the degree of atomic coherence. In contrary to the expectation based on the assumption that entanglement is a part of quantum discord, it is found that the latter can be less than the former. Under thermal noise effect, we find that quantum discord measured when the state [Formula: see text] exhibits entanglement diminishes drastically, while that measured when the [Formula: see text] is separable displays a relatively robust behavior seeming to be captured over a wide range of temperature. Our results assert that nondegenerate three-level lasers may play a crucial role in the implementation of quantum processing tasks, particularly those who do not need entangled states.

Converting Coherence to Quantum Correlations

Jiajun Ma, Benjamin Yadin, Davide Girolami +2 more

Recent results in quantum information theory characterize quantum coherence in the context of resource theories. Here, we study the relation between quantum coherence and quantum discord, a kind of quantum correlation which appears even in nonentangled states. We prove that the creation of quantum discord with multipartite incoherent operations is bounded by the amount of quantum coherence consumed in its subsystems during the process. We show how the interplay between quantum coherence consumption and creation of quantum discord works in the preparation of multipartite quantum correlated states and in the model of deterministic quantum computation with one qubit.

Local quantum uncertainty and non-commutativity measure discord in two-mode photon-added entangled coherent states

L. Jebli, Mohammed Daoud A

Abstract In this paper, we investigate quantum correlations in coherent entangled states with photons added, which are produced by the creation operator acting on Bell entangled coherent states. The non-classical characteristics of the quantum state created by combining two-mode coherent states with any number of photons are also taken into account. We provide explicit expressions fort he pairwise quantum correlations found in superpositions of coherent states with (m; n)-photon addition. A comparison between a non-commutativity discord-like measure and the evaluation of the local quantum uncertainty to measure quantum correlations is also produced. We consider some special superpositions of quasi-Bell entangled coherent photon-added states to be illustrative of our analytical findings. Additionally, investigated is the quantum correlations' evolution in a channel that is dephasing.

Review of quantum discord in bipartite and multipartite systems

Jian-Song Zhang, Aixi Chen

Quantum information and computation, based on quantum correlations of quantum systems, is one of the promising new fields of physics and information science. Entanglement is the key resource of quantum information processing. However, it is shown recently that quantum entanglement is not the only kind of quantum correlations useful for quantum information processing. Quantum systems without any entanglement can still be helpful for quantum information processing since unentangled systems could have another kind of quantum correlations - quantum discord. Thus, quantum discord has drawn much attention in recent years. Here, we briefly review the concepts and properties of quantum discord. Several measures of discord including the original measure of discord, relative entropy-based discord, geometric discord, global discord, Gaussian discord, are reviewed and discussed.
