Abstract

This paper studies the nonlinear periodic patterns generated by a moving impurity in an ultracold Bose gas, also called cnoidal waves, and shows that they possess typical supersolid features in both their static and dynamic behavior.

Dynamics of Stripe Patterns in Supersolid Spin-Orbit-Coupled Bose Gases

Kevin T. Geier, Giovanni Italo Martone, Philipp Hauke +2 more

Despite ground-breaking observations of supersolidity in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, until now the dynamics of the emerging spatially periodic density modulations has been vastly unexplored. Here, we demonstrate the nonrigidity of the density stripes in such a supersolid condensate and explore their dynamic behavior subject to spin perturbations. We show both analytically in infinite systems and numerically in the presence of a harmonic trap how spin waves affect the supersolid's density profile in the form of crystal waves, inducing oscillations of the periodicity as well as the orientation of the fringes. Both these features are well within reach of present-day experiments. Our results show that this system is a paradigmatic supersolid, featuring superfluidity in conjunction with a fully dynamic crystalline structure.

Mean-field phases of an ultracold gas in a quasicrystalline potential

Dean Johnstone, Patrik Öhberg, Callum W. Duncan

The ground-state properties of an ultracold Bose gas in an eightfold symmetric lattice are studied. Mott-insulator, density wave, and supersolid phases are identified. A density wave phase that spontaneously breaks rotational symmetry appears for strong long-range interactions.

Supersolid behavior in one-dimensional self-trapped Bose–Einstein condensate

Mithilesh K. Parit, Gargi Tyagi, Dheerendra Singh +1 more

Abstract Supersolid is an exotic state of matter, showing crystalline order with a superfluid background, observed recently in dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate in a trap. Here, we present exact Bloch wave function of the self-trapped supersolid phase, in the presence of mean-field and beyond mean-field interaction. Our general solutions of the amended nonlinear Schrödinger equation are obtained through Möbius transform, connecting a wide class of supersolid solutions to the ubiquitous cnoidal waves. The solutions yield the supersolid phase in the self-trapped quantum matter, where an array of quantum droplets exist, accompanied by a constant condensate. For the supersolid phase, the chemical potential for one class of solutions is the same as that of self-trapped quantum droplets, and is lower for the general non-perturbative solution. Due to the destabilizing effects of fluctuations on long range order in one dimension, the realization of the supersolid phase may be possible in a finite system.

Bose polarons in superfluids and supersolids

Laurent H. A. Simons

Bose-Einstein condensation is a macroscopic quantum phenomenon where cooling down a gas of bosonic particles to ultracold temperatures results in the macroscopic occupation of the lowest energy state. This new state of matter has been used as a quantum simulator of many-body phenomena and theories due to its extreme tunability and controllability. An important example of such a many-body system is the polaron which, in its most general form, describes an impurity interacting with a bosonic bath. In the case of ultracold Bose gases, the impurity interacts with and is dressed by the Bogoliubov excitations of the gas. A supersolid is a state of matter that exhibits both superfluidity and crystalline order, which are seemingly irreconcilable properties. It has recently been observed in dipolar ultracold Bose gases, where it arises from the long-range anisotropic dipole-dipole interactions, and also other systems. The breaking of both translational symmetry and gauge symmetry results in multiple excitation modes in the supersolid. In this thesis, the charged Bose polaron and an impurity in a dipolar ultracold Bose gas exhibiting supersolidity (the supersolid Bose polaron) are studied. The ground-state properties of the charged Bose polaron are discussed using a variational path-integral approach. Absorption spectroscopy is proposed as a probe of the charged Bose polaron, and the optical response is studied for weak impurity-boson interactions. Next, the one-dimensional dipolar supersolid Bose polaron is investigated where multiple approaches are used for the derivation of the ground-state properties. The study of the polaron problem with a supersolid background is of particular interest because of the rich excitation spectrum of the supersolid. Interesting phenomena, such as possible localization of the polaron to a single droplet for strong interactions, are observed. The absorption spectrum of a charged impurity in the supersolid is also derived, which, because of the different excitation modes of the supersolid, shows multiple peaks from which information such as the superfluid fraction may be obtained.

Optical lattices as a tool to study the ground-state supersolidity

G. E. Astrakharchik, Konstantin V. Krutitsky, Maciej Lewenstein +2 more

We study the superfluid response, the energetic and structural properties of a one-dimensional ultracold Bose gas in an optical lattice of arbitrary strength. We use the Bose-Fermi mapping in the limit of infinitely large repulsive interaction and the diffusion Monte Carlo method in the case of finite interaction. For slightly incommensurate fillings we find a supersolid behavior which is discussed in terms of vacancies and interstitials. It is shown that both the excitation spectrum and static structure factor are different for the cases of microscopic and macroscopic fractions of defects.

Stationary wave patterns generated by an impurity moving with supersonic velocity through a Bose-Einstein condensate

Tzyy‐Leng Horng, Shih-Chuan Gou, Tai‐Chia Lin +3 more

Formation of stationary three-dimensional (3D) wave patterns generated by a small pointlike impurity moving through a Bose-Einstein condensate with supersonic velocity is studied. Asymptotic formulae for a stationary far-field density distribution are obtained. Comparison with the three-dimensional numerical simulations demonstrates that these formulae are accurate enough already at the distances from the obstacle equal to a few wavelengths.
