Abstract

Abstract The momentum distribution and dynamical structure factor in a weakly interacting Bose gas with a time-dependent periodic modulation in terms of the Bogoliubov treatment are investigated. The evolution equation related to the Bogoliubov weights happens to be a solvable Mathieu equation when the coupling strength is periodically modulated. An exact relation between the time derivatives of momentum distribution and dynamical structure factor is derived, which indicates that the single-particle property is strongly related to the two-body property in the evolutions of Bose–Einstein condensates. It is found that the momentum distribution and dynamical structure factor cannot display periodical behavior. For stable dynamics, some particular peaks in the curves of momentum distribution and dynamical structure factor appear synchronously, which is consistent with the derivative relation.

Momentum distribution and coherence of a weakly interacting Bose gas after a quench

Giovanni Italo Martone, Pierre-Élie Larré, Alessandro Fabbri +1 more

The time evolution of a weakly interacting uniform atomic Bose gas with a time-dependent nonlinear coupling constant is investigated with a Bogoliubov treatment. The evolution of Bogoliubov modes in different momentum regimes, the existence of exact solutions, and the coherence property of the system in one spatial dimension are discussed.

Universal Dynamics of a Degenerate Bose Gas Quenched to Unitarity

Chao Gao, Mingyuan Sun, Peng Zhang +1 more

Motivated by an unexpected experimental observation from the Cambridge group, [Eigen et al., Nature 563, 221 (2018)], we study the evolution of the momentum distribution of a degenerate Bose gas quenched from the weakly interacting regime to the unitary regime. For the two-body problem, we establish a relation that connects the momentum distribution at a long time to a subleading term in the initial wave function. For the many-body problem, we employ the time-dependent Bogoliubov variational wave function and find that, in certain momentum regimes, the momentum distribution at long times displays the same exponential behavior found by the experiment. Moreover, we find that this behavior is universal and is independent of the short-range details of the interaction potential. Consistent with the relation found in the two-body problem, we also numerically show that this exponential form is hidden in the same subleading term of the Bogoliubov wave function in the initial stages. Conceptually, our results show that, for quench to the universal regime and coherent quantum dynamics afterward, the universal longtime behavior is hidden in the initial state.

Dynamic structure factor and momentum distribution of a trapped Bose gas

Francesca Zambelli, Лев П. Питаевский, Dan Stamper-Kurn +1 more

The dynamic structure factor of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensed gas is investigated at zero temperature in the framework of Bogoliubov theory. Different values of momentum transfer are considered, ranging from the phonon to the single-particle regime. Various approximate schemes are discussed, including the local density approximation, where the system is locally described as a uniform gas, and the impulse approximation, in which the response is fixed by the momentum distribution of the condensate. A comprehensive approach, based on the eikonal expansion, is presented. The predictions of theory are successfully compared with the results of recent two-photon Bragg scattering experiments, at both low and high momentum transfer. Relevant features of the dynamic structure factor are also discussed using the formalism of sum rules and the concept of scaling. Particular emphasis is given to the regime of high momentum transfer, in which the dynamic structure factor is sensitive to the behavior of the order parameter in momentum space, and some instructive examples showing the consequence of long-range coherence are presented.

Collective Excitation and Quantum Depletion of a Bose—Einstein Condensate in a Periodic Array of Quantum Wells

Rui Xue, Weidong Li, Zhaoxin Liang

With the help of a set of exact closed-form solutions to the stationary Gross—Pitaevskii (GP) equation, we calculate the collective excitation and quantum depletion of a weakly interacting Bose gas in the presence of a periodic array of quantum wells. The excitation spectrum (Bogoliubov spectrum) is obtained from the solution of the linearized time-dependent GP equation, which develops energy bands ħω j ( p ) periodic in quasi-momentum space. Moreover, we calculate the excitation strengths Z j ( p ) relative to the density operator and then the dynamic structure factor S ( p , ω). Accordingly, the analytical expressions of quantum depletion of the system are obtained. We find that the quantum depletion is enhanced when the interatomic interactions become larger and the potential is sufficiently deep. The conditions for the possible experimental realization of our scenario are also proposed.

Superfluid dynamics of a Bose–Einstein condensate in a periodic potential

C Menotti, A Smerzi, A Trombettoni

We investigate the superfluid properties of a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in a one-dimensional periodic potential. We study, both analytically (in the tight binding limit) and numerically, the Bloch chemical potential, the Bloch energy and the Bogoliubov dispersion relation, and we introduce two different, density dependent, effective masses and group velocities. The Bogoliubov spectrum predicts the existence of sound waves, and the arising of energetic and dynamical instabilities at critical values of the BEC quasi-momentum which dramatically affect its coherence properties. We investigate the dependence of the dipole and Bloch oscillation frequencies in terms of an effective mass averaged over the density of the condensate. We illustrate our results with several animations obtained solving numerically the time-dependent Gross–Pitaevskii equation.

Effects of three-body interaction on dynamic and static structure factors of an optically-trapped Bose gas

Wei Qi, Zhaoxin Liang, Zhang Zhi-dong

We investigate how three-body interactions affect the elementary excitations and dynamic structure factor of a Bose—Einstein condensate trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice. To this end, we numerically solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and then the corresponding Bogoliubov equations. Our results show that three-body interactions can change both the Bogoliubov band structure and the dynamical structure factor dramatically, especially in the case of the two-body interaction being relatively small. Furthermore, when the optical lattice is strong enough, the analytical results, combined with the sum-rule approach, help us to understand that: the effects of three-body interactions on the static structure factor can be significantly amplified by an optical lattice. Our predictions should be observable within the current Bragg spectroscopy experiment.
