Abstract

With the help of a set of exact closed-form solutions to the stationary Gross—Pitaevskii (GP) equation, we calculate the collective excitation and quantum depletion of a weakly interacting Bose gas in the presence of a periodic array of quantum wells. The excitation spectrum (Bogoliubov spectrum) is obtained from the solution of the linearized time-dependent GP equation, which develops energy bands ħω j ( p ) periodic in quasi-momentum space. Moreover, we calculate the excitation strengths Z j ( p ) relative to the density operator and then the dynamic structure factor S ( p , ω). Accordingly, the analytical expressions of quantum depletion of the system are obtained. We find that the quantum depletion is enhanced when the interatomic interactions become larger and the potential is sufficiently deep. The conditions for the possible experimental realization of our scenario are also proposed.

Exact nonlinear Bloch-state solutions for Bose–Einstein condensates in a periodic array of quantum wells

Rui Xue, Zhaoxin Liang, Weidong Li

A set of exact closed-form Bloch-state solutions to the stationary Gross-Pitaevskii equation are obtained for a Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional periodic array of quantum wells, i.e. a square-well periodic potential. We use these exact solutions to comprehensively study the Bloch band, the compressibility, effective mass and the speed of sound as functions of both the potential depth and interatomic interaction. According to our study, a periodic array of quantum wells is more analytically tractable than the sinusoidal potential and allows an easier experimental realization than the Krönig-Penney potential, therefore providing a useful theoretical model for understanding Bose-Einstein condensates in a periodic potential.

Stability Diagrams of a Bose–Einstein Condensate in a Periodic Array of Quantum Wells

Xue Rui, Liang Zhao-Xin, Weidong Li

With the help of a set of exact closed-form solutions to the stationary Gross–Pitaevskii equation, we comprehensively investigate Landau and dynamical instabilities of a Bose–Einstein condensate in a periodic array of quantum wells. In the tight-binding limit, the analytical expressions for both Landau and dynamical instabilities are obtained in terms of the compressibility and effective mass of the BEC system. Then the stability phase diagrams are shown to be similar to the one in the case of the sinusoidal optical lattice.

Quantum Fluctuations and Gross-Pitaevskii Theory

S. Stringari

Abstract Using the linearized version of the time dependent Gross–Pitaevskii equation, we calculate the dynamic response of a Bose–Einstein condensed gas to periodic density and particle perturbations. The zero temperature limit of the fluctuation—dissipation theorem is used to evaluate the corresponding quantum fluctuations induced by the elementary excitations in the ground state. In uniform conditions the predictions of Bogoliubov theory, including the infrared divergency of the particle distribution function and the quantum depletion of the condensate, are exactly reproduced by Gross–Pitaevskii theory. Results are also given for the crossed particle-density response function and the extension of the formalism to nonuniform systems is discussed. The generalization of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation to include beyond mean field effects is finally considered and an explicit result for the chemical potential is found, in agreement with the prediction of Lee–Huang–Yang theory.

Many-body effects in the excitation spectrum of weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates in one-dimensional optical lattices

Raphael Beinke, Shachar Klaiman, Lorenz S. Cederbaum +2 more

In this work, we study many-body excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in periodic one-dimensional optical lattices. In particular, we investigate the impact of quantum depletion onto the structure of the low-energy spectrum and contrast the findings to the mean-field predictions of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) equations. Accurate results for the many-body excited states are obtained by applying a linear-response theory atop the multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree method for bosons equations of motion. We demonstrate for condensates in a triple well that even weak ground-state depletion of around $1%$ leads to visible many-body effects in the low-energy spectrum, which deviates substantially from the corresponding BdG spectrum. We further show that these effects also appear in larger systems with more lattice sites and particles, indicating the general necessity of a full many-body treatment.

Bose-Einstein condensates and the spectrum of excitations in a two-dimensional channel

I. V. Shunyaev, Andrei A. Elistratov, Yu. E. Lozovik

The transverse spatial distribution of weakly interacting Bose gas in a narrow channel is found. The corresponding analytical solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation has the form of a cnoidal wave. The possible physical realization of the model is a system of cold atoms or quasiparticles, e.g., excitons, cavity photons, exciton polaritons. The obtained formula is used for the numerical calculation of the spectrum of excitations and the critical velocity of the condensate. These numerical results do not coincide with the Bogoliubov spectrum, and we show that the strongly inhomogeneous condensate density leads to larger values of the critical velocity. We also make numerical estimation of the critical velocity for various types of considered particles or quasiparticles.

Compressibility, Bloch bands and elementary excitations

Meret Krämer, S. Stringari

We discuss the Bloch-state solutions of the stationary Gross-Pitaevskii equation and of the Bogoliubov equations for a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a one-dimensional optical lattice. The results for the compressibility, effective mass and velocity of sound are analysed as a function of the lattice depth and of the strength of the two-body interaction. The band structure of the spectrum of elementary excitations is compared with the one exhibited by the stationary solutions (Bloch bands). Moreover, the numerical calculations are compared with the analytic predictions of the tight binding approximation. We also discuss the role of quantum fluctuations and show that the condensate exhibits 3D, 2D or 1D features depending on the lattice depth and on the number of particles occupying each potential well. We finally show how, using a local density approximation, our results can be applied to study the behaviour of the gas in the presence of harmonic trapping.
