Abstract

We propose a novel optical parametric amplification scheme that combines quasi-phase-matching with a composite pulse approach that involves crystal segments of specific lengths. The presented scheme highly increases the robustness of the frequency conversion against variations of the nonlinear coupling and of the pump, idler, or signal wavelengths, and has therefore the potential to enhance high amplification and broadband operation. Simulation examples applied to LiNbO 3 are given.

Detuning modulated composite segments for robust optical frequency conversion

Yuval Reches, Elazar Elias, Haim Suchowski

Abstract The creation of efficient broadband frequency conversion devices while maintaining robustness to manufacturing and setup errors is crucial for accurate multiphoton spectroscopy, broadband imaging and the design of robust optical sources. Traditionally, nonlinear optical conversion processes are either efficient but narrowband or broadband but with low photon conversion yield. Several methods have been introduced in recent years to obtain both with great success, among them we can find adiabatic frequency conversion and Shaka–Pines composite segmented design. Here, we expand the composite design and introduce the detuning modulated composite segmented (DMCS) scheme in nonlinear optics, which offers a broadband, efficient and robust method for frequency conversion. We also present the constant-length DMCS scheme, which offers multiple efficient and robust wavelength regimes for broadband upconversion. We apply these schemes to a system of quasi-phase-matching crystal for the sum frequency generation process, and demonstrate the high robustness and bandwidth of the composite schemes. We show that these schemes are robust to temperature and crystal length variations and can have a superior conversion bandwidth under length and power constraints compared to other conversion schemes, such as periodically poled and adiabatic chirped crystals. We believe that the new family of DMCS schemes will have many uses in applications of frequency conversion, due to their robustness, low energy demand and compact size.

Broadband optical parametric amplification at the communication band with periodically poled lithium niobate

Oc‐Yeub Jeon, Min-Ji Jin, Hwan Hong Lim +2 more

We report broadband optical parametric generation (OPG) in a single periodically poled lithium niobate crystal with a picosecond pump pulse at a fixed wavelength. We also demonstrate efficient optical parametric amplification of a broadband seed pulse within the quasi-phase-matched OPG band. The broad parametric gain band is attributed to group-velocity matching and degeneracy between the signal and idler, and the broad spectral width of the pumping source.

Broadband optical parametric amplification using PPLN waveguide pumped by detuned second harmonic

Masaki Asobe, Daiki Yagi, Yuki Kawabata +4 more

Optical parametric amplification in the range of 1.3–1.8 µm was demonstrated by using a periodically poled LiNbO3 (PPLN) waveguide as a nonlinear medium by varying the detuning of the pump wavelength. A wide range of detuning was enabled by using a multiple-quasi-phase-matched (M-QPM) LiNbO3 waveguide for pump generation through second harmonic generation (SHG) and temperature control of the PPLN waveguide. Broadband optical amplification and wavelength conversion through difference frequency generation (DFG) are considered useful for widening the bandwidth of optical communication.

Parametric wavelength conversion with bidirectional utilization of a multiple QPM device

Masaki Asobe, Saroeun Punhavan, Kato Masato +4 more

A configuration for wavelength conversion and optical amplification by parametric interaction using a nonlinear optical device is proposed. It enables pump generation through second harmonic generation (SHG), difference frequency generation (DFG), and optical parametric amplification (OPA) using a multiple-quasi-phase-matched (M-QPM) LiNbO3 waveguide in a bidirectional manner. Wavelength conversion for the 1.4–1.6 µm band is experimentally demonstrated. In addition, it is demonstrated that the parametric gain band can be changed using various detunings between the pump and QPM wavelengths used for the DFG/OPA process. The proposed method would be useful for enabling high-capacity optical transmission outside the 1550-nm band.

Parametric optical amplification using a reflective multiple quasi-phase-matched LiNbO 3 waveguide module

Masaki Asobe, Yuki Kawabata, Daiki Yagi +3 more

Optical parametric amplification (OPA) in the S-band with a compact configuration was demonstrated using a reflective multiple quasi-phase-matched (M-QPM) LiNbO 3 waveguide module. The reflective-module-assembled LiNbO 3 waveguide has two QPM peaks and a built-in mirror that reflects only the second harmonic. These features make it possible to perform second harmonic pump generation and OPA under different phase-matching conditions using a single device. The idler light generated in the module retains the phase information from the signal light and is used to evaluate signal quality.

Ultrafast group-velocity control via cascaded quadratic nonlinearities in optical parametric amplification

Bingjie Zhou, Jingui Ma, Jing Wang +3 more

Slow and fast light are ubiquitous in optical amplifiers. In this Letter, we show for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, that optical parametric amplification (OPA) in chirped quasi-phase-matching structures can act as a platform for group-velocity control in the femtosecond regime. The resonant cascaded nonlinear phase underlies the group-velocity control, which manifests an unusual effect that both slow and fast light can be achieved under the normal condition of signal amplification. As numerically demonstrated in the OPA based on the lithium niobate crystal, the signal and idler pulse can be significantly delayed in time comparable to the signal duration and can also keep high fidelity for durations down to 100 fs until the crystal dispersion becomes effective. The broad bandwidth, large group delay, and direct compatibility with integrated optics will make the proposed platform attractive to both fundamental research and applied science.
