Surface Pair-Density-Wave Superconducting and Superfluid States

Abstract

Fulde, Ferrell, Larkin, and Ovchinnikov (FFLO) predicted inhomogeneous superconducting and superfluid ground states, spontaneously breaking translation symmetries. In this Letter, we demonstrate that the transition from the FFLO to the normal state as a function of temperature or increased Fermi surface splitting is not a direct one. Instead, the system has an additional phase transition to a different state where pair-density-wave superconductivity (or superfluidity) exists only on the boundaries of the system, while the bulk of the system is normal. The surface pair-density-wave state is very robust and exists for much larger fields and temperatures than the FFLO state.

Pair-density-wave superconductivity of faces, edges, and vertices in systems with imbalanced fermions

Albert Samoilenka, Mats Barkman, Andrea Benfenati +1 more

We describe boundary effects in superconducting systems with Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superconducting instability, using Bogoliubov-de-Gennes and Ginzburg-Landau (GL) formalisms. First, we show that in dimensions larger than one the standard GL functional formalism for FFLO superconductors is unbounded from below. This is demonstrated by finding solutions with zero Laplacian terms near boundaries. We generalize the GL formalism for these systems by retaining higher order terms. Next, we demonstrate that a cuboid sample of a superconductor with imbalanced fermions at a mean-field level has a sequence of the phase transitions. At low temperatures it forms Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in the bulk but has a different modulation pattern close to the boundaries. When temperature is increased the first phase transition occurs when the bulk of the material becomes normal while the faces remain superconducting. The second transition occurs at higher temperature where the system retains superconductivity on the edges. The third transition is associated with the loss of edge superconductivity while retaining superconducting gap in the vertices. We obtain the same sequence of phase transition by numerically solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes model.

Fate of a strongly correlated d -wave superconductor in a Zeeman field: The Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov perspective

Anushree Datta, Kun Yang, Amit Ghosal

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase is an unconventional superconducting state found under the influence of a strong Zeeman field. This phase is identified by finite center-of-mass momenta in the Cooper pairs, causing the pairing amplitude to oscillate in real space. Repulsive correlations, on the other hand, smear out spatial inhomogeneities in $d$-wave superconductors. We investigate the FFLO state in a strongly correlated $d$-wave superconductor within a consolidated framework of Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory and the Gutzwiller approximation. We find that the crucial effects of strong correlations lie in shifting the BCS-FFLO phase boundary towards a lower Zeeman field and thereby enlarging the window of the FFLO phase. In the FFLO state, our calculation features a sharp midgap peak in the density of states, indicating the formation of strongly localized Andreev bound states. We also find that the signatures of the FFLO phase survive even in the presence of an additional translational-symmetry-breaking competing order in the ground state. This is demonstrated by considering a broken-symmetry ground state with a simultaneous presence of the $d$-wave superconducting order and a spin-density wave order, often found in unconventional superconductors.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states and topological Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces in altermagnets: An analytical study

Zhao Liu, Hui Hu, Xia-Ji Liu

We present an analytical study of the ground-state phase diagram for dilute two-dimensional spin-1/2 Fermi gases exhibiting $d$-wave altermagnetic spin splitting under $s$-wave pairing. Within the Bogoliubov-de Gennes mean-field framework, four distinct phases are identified: a Bardeen-Schrieffer-Cooper-type superfluid, a normal metallic phase, a nodal superfluid with topological Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces (TBFSs), and Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states with finite center-of-mass momentum. Among these, the FFLO states and TBFSs exemplify two unconventional forms of superconductivity. Considering the simplicity of this model, with only one band, zero net magnetization, and $s$-wave paring, the emergence of both unconventional phases underscores the pivotal role of altermagnetic spin splitting in enabling exotic pairing phenomena. This analytical study not only offers a valuable benchmark for future numerical simulations, but also provides a concrete experimental roadmap for realizing FFLO states and TBFSs in altermagnets.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov Superfluids with $P$-wave Symmetry in Spinless Fermionic Optical Lattices

Zhen-Fei Zheng, Zhen Zheng, Xu‐Bo Zou +1 more

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, whose Cooper pairing hosts a non-zero center-of-mass momentum, is predicted and well studied in spin-singlet superfluids in past decades. Different from previous works that engineer FFLO superfluids in spinful cold atoms, we show that the FFLO superfluids, with $p$-wave symmetry, can emerge in a spinless environment associated with nearest-neighbor-site interactions. The novel mechanism of the FFLO superfluids lies on the split Fermi surfaces at low filling factor, which naturally gives rise to Cooper pairings with finite momentum. The phase transition is accompanied by changed Chern numbers, in which, different from the conventional picture, the band gap does not close. The exotic topological transition can be explained by the spontaneously-broken translational invariance of order parameters. Finally, we investigate the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition temperature of the FFLO state, and show its possibility to be observed at finite temperature.

Route to observable Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phases in three-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled degenerate Fermi gases

Zhen Zheng, Ming Gong, Xu‐Bo Zou +2 more

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase was first predicted in two-dimensional superconductors about 50 years ago, but so far unambiguous experimental evidence is still lacking. The recently experimentally realized spin-imbalanced Fermi gases may potentially unveil this elusive state, but they require very stringent experimental conditions. In this Rapid Communication, we show that FFLO phases may be observed even in a three-dimensional (3D) degenerate Fermi gas with spin-orbit coupling and an in-plane Zeeman field. The FFLO phase is driven by the interplay between the asymmetry of the Fermi surface and the superfluid order, instead of the interplay between magnetic and superconducting order in solid materials. The predicted FFLO phase exists in a giant parameter region, possesses a stable long-range superfluid order due to the 3D geometry, and can be observed with an experimentally already achieved temperature ($T\ensuremath{\sim}0.05{E}_{F}$), thus opening a fascinating avenue for exploring FFLO physics.
