Abstract

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase was first predicted in two-dimensional superconductors about 50 years ago, but so far unambiguous experimental evidence is still lacking. The recently experimentally realized spin-imbalanced Fermi gases may potentially unveil this elusive state, but they require very stringent experimental conditions. In this Rapid Communication, we show that FFLO phases may be observed even in a three-dimensional (3D) degenerate Fermi gas with spin-orbit coupling and an in-plane Zeeman field. The FFLO phase is driven by the interplay between the asymmetry of the Fermi surface and the superfluid order, instead of the interplay between magnetic and superconducting order in solid materials. The predicted FFLO phase exists in a giant parameter region, possesses a stable long-range superfluid order due to the 3D geometry, and can be observed with an experimentally already achieved temperature ($T\ensuremath{\sim}0.05{E}_{F}$), thus opening a fascinating avenue for exploring FFLO physics.

FFLO Superfluids in 2D Spin-Orbit Coupled Fermi Gases

Zhen Zheng, Ming Gong, Yichao Zhang +3 more

We show that the combination of spin-orbit coupling and in-plane Zeeman field in a two-dimensional degenerate Fermi gas can lead to a larger parameter region for Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phases than that using spin-imbalanced Fermi gases. The resulting FFLO superfluids are also more stable due to the enhanced energy difference between FFLO and conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) excited states. We clarify the crucial role of the symmetry of Fermi surface on the formation of finite momentum pairing. The phase diagram for FFLO superfluids is obtained in the BCS-BEC crossover region and possible experimental observations of FFLO phases are discussed.

Exotic pairing states in a Fermi gas with three-dimensional spin-orbit coupling

Xiang-Fa Zhou, Guang‐Can Guo, Wei Zhang +1 more

We investigate properties of exotic pairing states in a three-dimensional Fermi gas with three-dimensional spin-orbit coupling and an effective Zeeman field. The interplay of spin-orbit coupling, effective Zeeman field, and pairing can lead to first-order phase transitions between different phases, and to interesting nodal superfluid states with gapless surfaces in the momentum space. We then demonstrate that pairing states with zero center-of-mass momentum are unstable against Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states, with a finite center-of-mass momentum opposite to the direction of the effective Zeeman field. Unlike conventional FFLO states, these FFLO states are induced by the coexistence of spin-orbit coupling and Fermi surface deformation, and have intriguing features like first-order transitions between different FFLO states, nodal FFLO states with gapless surfaces in momentum space, and exotic fully gapped FFLO states. With the recent theoretical proposals for realizing three-dimensional spin-orbit coupling in ultracold atomic gases, our work is helpful for future experimental studies and provides valuable information for the general understanding of pairing physics in spin-orbit-coupled fermionic systems.

Competing superfluid orders in spin-orbit-coupled fermionic cold-atom optical lattices

Yong Xu, Chunlei Qu, Ming Gong +1 more

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, a superconducting state with nonzero total momentum Cooper pairs in a large magnetic field, was first predicted about 50 years ago and has since become an important concept in many branches of physics. Despite an intensive search in various materials, unambiguous experimental evidence for the FFLO phase is still lacking in experiments. In this paper we show that both Fulde-Ferrell (FF) (a uniform order parameter with a plane-wave phase) and Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) phases (a spatially varying order parameter amplitude) can be observed using fermionic cold atoms in spin-orbit-coupled optical lattices. The increasing spin-orbit coupling enhances the FF phase over the LO phase. The coexistence of superfluid and magnetic orders is also found in the normal BCS phase. The pairing mechanism for different phases is understood by visualizing superfluid pairing densities in different spin-orbit bands. The possibility of observing similar physics using spin-orbit-coupled superconducting ultrathin films is also discussed.

Feasibility of a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superfluid Fermi atomic gas

Taira Kawamura, Yoji Ohashi

We theoretically explore a promising route to achieve the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in a spin-imbalanced ultracold Fermi gas. In the current stage of cold atom physics, search for this exotic Fermi superfluid is facing two serious difficulties: One is the desperate destruction of the FFLO long-range order by FFLO pairing fluctuations, which precludes entering the phase through a second-order transition, even in three dimension. The other is the fierce competition with the phase separation into the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) state and the spin-polarized normal state. By including strong FFLO pairing fluctuations within the framework of the strong-coupling theory developed by Nozi\`eres and Schmitt-Rink, we show that the anisotropy of Fermi surface introduced by an optical lattice makes the FFLO state stable against the paring fluctuations. This stabilized FFLO state is also found to be able to overcome the competition with the phase separation under a certain condition. Since the realization of unconventional Fermi superfluids is one of the most exciting challenges in cold atom physics, our results would contribute to the further development of this field.

Fulde-Ferrell superfluids without spin-imbalance in three-dimensional driven spinful fermionic optical lattices

Chunlei Qu, Zhen Zheng, Xu‐Bo Zou +1 more

Spin-imbalanced ultra-cold Fermi gases have been widely studied recently as a platform for exploring the long-sought Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superfluid phases, but so far conclusive evidence has not been found. Here we propose to realize an FF superfluid without spin imbalance in a three-dimensional (3D) fermionic cold atom optical lattice, where sand p-orbital bands of the lattice are coupled by another weak moving optical lattice. Such coupling leads to a spin-independent asymmetric Fermi surface, which, together with the s-wave scattering interaction between two spins, yields an FF type of superfluid pairing. Unlike traditional schemes, our proposal does not rely on the spin imbalance (or an equivalent Zeeman field) to induce the Fermi surface mismatch and may provide a completely new route for realizing FF superfluids.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov or Majorana superfluids: The fate of fermionic cold atoms in spin-orbit-coupled optical lattices

Chunlei Qu, Ming Gong, Chuanwei Zhang

The recent experimental realization of spin-orbit (SO) coupling for ultracold atoms opens a completely new avenue for exploring new quantum matters. In experiments, the SO coupling is implemented simultaneously with a Zeeman field. Such SO-coupled Fermi gases are predicted to support Majorana fermions with non-Abelian exchange statistics in one dimension (1D). However, as shown in recent theory and experiments for 1D spin-imbalanced Fermi gases, the Zeeman field can lead to the long-sought Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superfluids with nonzero center-of-mass momentum Cooper pairings, in contrast to the zero center-of-mass momentum pairings in Majorana superfluids. Therefore a natural question to ask is which phase, FFLO or Majorana superfluids, will survive in SO-coupled Fermi gases in the presence of a large out-of-plane Zeeman field. In this paper, we address this question by studying the mean-field quantum phases of 1D (quasi-1D) SO-coupled fermionic cold-atom optical lattices.
