Abstract

We describe boundary effects in superconducting systems with Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superconducting instability, using Bogoliubov-de-Gennes and Ginzburg-Landau (GL) formalisms. First, we show that in dimensions larger than one the standard GL functional formalism for FFLO superconductors is unbounded from below. This is demonstrated by finding solutions with zero Laplacian terms near boundaries. We generalize the GL formalism for these systems by retaining higher order terms. Next, we demonstrate that a cuboid sample of a superconductor with imbalanced fermions at a mean-field level has a sequence of the phase transitions. At low temperatures it forms Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in the bulk but has a different modulation pattern close to the boundaries. When temperature is increased the first phase transition occurs when the bulk of the material becomes normal while the faces remain superconducting. The second transition occurs at higher temperature where the system retains superconductivity on the edges. The third transition is associated with the loss of edge superconductivity while retaining superconducting gap in the vertices. We obtain the same sequence of phase transition by numerically solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes model.

Population-imbalanced lattice fermions near the BCS-BEC crossover: Thermal physics of the breached pair and Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phases

Madhuparna Karmakar, Pinaki Majumdar

We study $s$-wave superconductivity in the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model in an applied magnetic field, assume the extreme Pauli limit, and examine the role of spatial fluctuations in the coupling regime corresponding to BCS-BEC crossover. We use a decomposition of the interaction in terms of an auxiliary pairing field, retain the static mode, and sample the pairing field via a Monte Carlo approach. The method requires iterative solution of the Bogoliubov--de-Gennes equations for amplitude- and phase-fluctuating configurations of the pairing field. We establish the full thermal phase diagram of this strong-coupling problem. At low field we observe the magnetized but homogeneous ``breached pair'' superfluid phase. It reveals that ${T}_{c}$ scales an order of magnitude below the mean-field estimate, spontaneous inhomogeneity in the field-induced magnetization, and a strong nonmonotonicity in the temperature dependence of the low-energy density of states. We compare our results to the experimental phase diagram of the imbalanced Fermi gas at unitarity. At higher field we obtain the modulated Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phases. The thermal transition from the FFLO phases to the normal state is strongly first order. We track the fermionic momentum distribution, the density of states, and the pairing structure factor deep into the normal state. The pairing structure factor retains weak signature of finite momentum pairing to a high temperature despite the low ${T}_{c}$ itself, while the spin-resolved density of states changes from the ``pseudogapped'' FFLO character to gapless and pseudogapped again with increasing temperature.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state of two-dimensional imbalanced Fermi gases

Daniel E. Sheehy

The ground-state phase diagram of attractively interacting Fermi gases in two dimensions with a population imbalance is investigated. We find the regime of stability for the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, in which pairing occurs at a finite wave vector, and determine the magnitude of the pairing amplitude $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ and FFLO wave vector $q$ in the ordered phase, finding that $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ can be of the order of the two-body binding energy. Our results rely on a careful analysis of the zero-temperature gap equation for the FFLO state, which possesses nonanalyticities as a function of $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ and $q$, invalidating a Ginzburg-Landau expansion in small $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov oscillations in harmonically trapped optical lattices

M. Iskin, Carl J. Williams

The attractive Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian is solved via the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism to analyze the ground state phases of population imbalanced two-component fermion mixtures in harmonically trapped optical lattices. In the low density limit, the superfluid order parameter has Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type oscillations in the radial direction towards the trap edges to accommodate the unpaired fermions that are pushed away from the trap center with a single peak in their density. However, in the high density limit, while the order parameter has oscillations in the radial direction towards the trap center for low imbalances, it also has oscillations towards the trap edges with increasing imbalance until the superfluid to normal phase transition occurs beyond a critical imbalance. This leads to a single peak in the density of unpaired fermions for low and high imbalances, but leads to double peaks for intermediate imbalances.

Surface Pair-Density-Wave Superconducting and Superfluid States

Mats Barkman, Albert Samoilenka, Egor S. Babaev

Fulde, Ferrell, Larkin, and Ovchinnikov (FFLO) predicted inhomogeneous superconducting and superfluid ground states, spontaneously breaking translation symmetries. In this Letter, we demonstrate that the transition from the FFLO to the normal state as a function of temperature or increased Fermi surface splitting is not a direct one. Instead, the system has an additional phase transition to a different state where pair-density-wave superconductivity (or superfluidity) exists only on the boundaries of the system, while the bulk of the system is normal. The surface pair-density-wave state is very robust and exists for much larger fields and temperatures than the FFLO state.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states and quantum oscillations in mesoscopic superconductors and superfluid ultracold Fermi gases

Alexei V. Samokhvalov, Alexander S. Mel'nikov, A. I. Buzdin

We have studied the distinctive features of the Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) instability and phase transitions in two-dimensional (2D) mesoscopic superconductors placed in magnetic field of arbitrary orientation and rotating superfluid Fermi gases with imbalanced state populations. Using a generalized version of the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory we have shown that the FFLO states are strongly modified by the effect of the trapping potential confining the condensate. The phenomenon of the inhomogeneous state formation is determined by the interplay of three length scales: (i) length scale of the FFLO instability; (ii) 2D system size; (iii) length scale associated with the orbital effect caused either by the Fermi condensate rotation or magnetic field component applied perpendicular to the superconducting disk. We have studied this interplay and resulting quantum oscillation effects in both superconducting and superfluid finite-size systems with FFLO instability and described the hallmarks of the FFLO phenomenon in a restricted geometry. The finite size of the system is shown to affect strongly the conditions of the observability of switching between the states with different vorticities.
