Modification of polarization through de-Gaussification

Abstract

We analyze the polarization of a quantum radiation field under a de-Gaussification process. Specifically, we consider the addition of photons to a two-mode thermal state to get mixed non-Gaussian and nonclassical states which are still diagonal in the Fock basis. Stokes-operator-based degrees of polarization and two distance-type measures defined with Hilbert-Schmidt and Bures metrics are investigated. For a better insight we here introduce a polarization degree based on the relative entropy. Polarization of the thermal states is fully investigated and simple closed expressions are found for all the defined degrees. The evaluated degrees for photon-added states are then compared to the corresponding ones for the two-mode thermal states they originate from. We present interesting findings which tell us that some popular degrees of polarization are not fully consistent. However, the most solidly defined degrees, which are based on the Bures metric and relative entropy, clearly indicate an enhancement of polarization through de-Gaussification. This conclusion is supported by the behavior of the degrees of polarization of the Fock states, which are finally discussed as a limit case.

Distinguishability and nonclassicality of one-mode Gaussian states

Paulina Marian, Tudor A. Marian, Horia Scutaru

We consider the class of the one-mode Gaussian states of the quantum radiation field. The relative entropy of such a state with respect to a similar one is derived. We analyze the entropic amount of nonclassicality of a Gaussian state defined as the minimal relative entropy of any classical Gaussian state with respect to it. A similar quantity built with the Hilbert-Schmidt distance is also calculated. Both nonclassicality measures are then compared with the Bures-metric degree of nonclassicality evaluated previously. The properties of the closest classical Gaussian state, as well as the decrease of the nonclassicality under thermal noise mappings are carefully examined in each case. For mixed states we find that only the Bures-distance amount of nonclassicality is equivalent to the nonclassical depth.

Probing light polarization with the quantum Chernoff bound

Iulia Ghiu, Gunnar G. Bjork, Paulina Marian +1 more

We recall the framework of a consistent quantum description of polarization of light. Accordingly, the degree of polarization of a two-mode state $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\rho}\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}$ of the quantum radiation field can be defined as a distance of a related state ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\rho}\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}}_{b}$ to the convex set of all SU(2)-invariant two-mode states. We explore a distance-type polarization measure in terms of the quantum Chernoff bound and derive its explicit expression. A comparison between the Chernoff and Bures degrees of polarization leads to interesting conclusions for some particular states chosen as illustrative examples.

Quantifying Nonclassicality of One-Mode Gaussian States of the Radiation Field

Paulina Marian, Tudor A. Marian, Horia Scutaru

We define the degree of nonclassicality of a one-mode Gaussian state of the quantum electromagnetic field in terms of the Bures distance between the state and the set of all classical one-mode Gaussian states. We find the closest classical Gaussian state and the degree of nonclassicality using a recently established expression for the Uhlmann fidelity of two single-mode Gaussian states. The decrease of nonclassicality under thermal mapping is carefully analyzed. Along the same lines, we finally present the evolution of nonclassicality during linear amplification.

Distance-based degrees of polarization for a quantum field

A. B. Klimov, Luis Lorenzo Sánchez-Soto, E. C. Yustas +2 more

It is well established that unpolarized light is invariant with respect to any SU(2) polarization transformation. This requirement fully characterizes the set of density matrices representing unpolarized states. We introduce the degree of polarization of a quantum state as its distance to the set of unpolarized states. We use two different candidates of distance, namely the Hilbert-Schmidt and the Bures metric, showing that they induce fundamentally different degrees of polarization. We apply these notions to relevant field states and we demonstrate that they avoid some of the problems arising with the classical definition.

Gaussification through decoherence

Paulina Marian, Iulia Ghiu, Tudor A. Marian

We investigate the loss of nonclassicality and non-Gaussianity of a single-mode state of the radiation field in contact with a thermal reservoir. The damped density matrix for a Fock-diagonal input is written using the Weyl expansion of the density operator. Analysis of the evolution of the quasiprobability densities reveals the existence of two successive characteristic times of the reservoir which are sufficient to assure the positivity of the Wigner function and, respectively, of the $P$ representation. We examine the time evolution of non-Gaussianity using three recently introduced distance-type measures. They are based on the Hilbert-Schmidt metric, the relative entropy, and the Bures metric. Specifically, for an $M$-photon-added thermal state, we obtain a compact analytic formula of the time-dependent density matrix that is used to evaluate and compare the three non-Gaussianity measures. We find a good consistency of these measures on the sets of damped states. The explicit damped quasiprobability densities are shown to support our general findings regarding the loss of negativities of Wigner and $P$ functions during decoherence. Finally, we point out that Gaussification of the attenuated field mode is accompanied by a nonmonotonic evolution of the von Neumann entropy of its state conditioned by the initial value of the mean photon number.

Measures of non-Gaussianity for one-mode field states

Iulia Ghiu, Paulina Marian, Tudor A. Marian

We introduce and investigate a distance-type measure of non-Gaussianity based on the quantum fidelity. This new measure can readily be evaluated for all pure states and the mixed ones that are diagonal in the Fock basis. In particular, for an M -photon-added thermal state, an analysis of the Bures degree of non-Gaussianity is performed in comparison with two previous measures built with the Hilbert–Schmidt metric and the relative entropy. We obtain a compact analytic formula for the Hilbert–Schmidt measure of non-Gaussianity and find good consistency between the three examined measures.
