Abstract

We define the degree of nonclassicality of a one-mode Gaussian state of the quantum electromagnetic field in terms of the Bures distance between the state and the set of all classical one-mode Gaussian states. We find the closest classical Gaussian state and the degree of nonclassicality using a recently established expression for the Uhlmann fidelity of two single-mode Gaussian states. The decrease of nonclassicality under thermal mapping is carefully analyzed. Along the same lines, we finally present the evolution of nonclassicality during linear amplification.

Distinguishability and nonclassicality of one-mode Gaussian states

Paulina Marian, Tudor A. Marian, Horia Scutaru

We consider the class of the one-mode Gaussian states of the quantum radiation field. The relative entropy of such a state with respect to a similar one is derived. We analyze the entropic amount of nonclassicality of a Gaussian state defined as the minimal relative entropy of any classical Gaussian state with respect to it. A similar quantity built with the Hilbert-Schmidt distance is also calculated. Both nonclassicality measures are then compared with the Bures-metric degree of nonclassicality evaluated previously. The properties of the closest classical Gaussian state, as well as the decrease of the nonclassicality under thermal noise mappings are carefully examined in each case. For mixed states we find that only the Bures-distance amount of nonclassicality is equivalent to the nonclassical depth.

Quantum Chernoff bound as a measure of nonclassicality for one-mode Gaussian states

Mădălina Boca, Iulia Ghiu, Paulina Marian +1 more

We evaluate a Gaussian distance-type degree of nonclassicality for a single-mode Gaussian state of the quantum radiation field by use of the recently discovered quantum Chernoff bound. The general properties of the quantum Chernoff overlap and its relation to the Uhlmann fidelity are interestingly illustrated by our approach.

A new measure of nonclassical distance

Horia Scutaru

We propose a new measure of the nonclassical distance in the case of Gaussian states. Let us consider two Gaussian states one of which is fixed and the other runs through the set of Gaussian classical states. The maximum value of the fidelity between these two states can be used as a nonclassical distance of the fixed state to the set of classical states, in the same extent as the Hillery measure. This measure increases when on the fixed state acts a Gaussian noise map i.e. the selected state becomes closer to the classical states.

On the Measure of Nonclassicality of Field States

J. M. C. Malbouisson, B. Baseia

The degree of nonclassicality of states of a field mode is analysed considering both phase-space and distance-type measures of nonclassicality. By working out some general examples, it is shown explicitly that the phase-space measure is rather sensitive to superposition of states, with finite superpositions possessing maximum nonclassical depth (the highest degree of nonclassicality) irrespective of the nature of the component states. Mixed states are also discussed and examples with nonclassical depth varying between the minimum and the maximum allowed values are exhibited. For pure Gaussian states, it is demonstrated that distance-type measures based on the Hilbert–Schmidt metric are equivalent to the phase-space measure. Analyzing some examples, it is shown that distance-type measures are efficient to quantify the degree of nonclassicality of non-Gaussian pure states.

A geometric measure of non-classicality

Paulina Marian, Tudor A Marian

Abstract This paper aims to stress the role of the Cahill–Glauber quasi-probability densities in defining, detecting, and quantifying the non-classicality of field states in quantum optics. The distance between a given pure state and the set of all pure classical states is called here a geometric degree of non-classicality. As such, we investigate non-classicality of a pure single-mode state of the radiation field by using the coherent states as a reference set of pure classical states. It turns out that any such distance is expressed in terms of the maximal value of the Husimi Q function. As an insightful application we consider the de-Gaussification process produced when preparing a quantum state by adding p photons to a pure Gaussian one. For a coherent-state input, we get an analytic degree of non-classicality which compares interestingly with the previously evaluated entanglement potential. Then we show that addition of a single photon to a squeezed vacuum state causes a considerable enhancement of non-classicality, especially at weak and moderate squeezing of the original state. By contrast, addition of further photons is less effective.

Uhlmann fidelity between two-mode Gaussian states

Paulina Marian, Tudor A. Marian

We analyze the Uhlmann fidelity of a pair of $n$-mode Gaussian states of the quantum radiation field. This quantity is shown to be the product of an exponential function depending on the relative average displacement and a factor fully determined by the symplectic spectrum of the covariance matrix of a specific Gaussian state. However, it is difficult to handle our general formula unless the Gaussian states commute or at least one of them is pure. On the contrary, in the simplest cases $n=1$ and $n=2$, it leads to explicit analytic formulas. Our main result is a calculable expression of the fidelity of two arbitrary two-mode Gaussian states. This can be applied to build reliable measures of quantum correlations between modes in various branches of quantum physics.
