Abstract

This text aims to present and explain quantum machine learning algorithms to a data scientist in an accessible and consistent way. The algorithms and equations presented are not written in rigorous mathematical fashion, instead, the pressure is put on examples and step by step explanation of difficult topics. This contribution gives an overview of selected quantum machine learning algorithms, however there is also a method of scores extraction for quantum PCA algorithm proposed as well as a new cost function in feed-forward quantum neural networks is introduced. The text is divided into four parts: the first part explains the basic quantum theory, then quantum computation and quantum computer architecture are explained in section two. The third part presents quantum algorithms which will be used as subroutines in quantum machine learning algorithms. Finally, the fourth section describes quantum machine learning algorithms with the use of knowledge accumulated in previous parts.

An introduction to quantum machine learning

Maria Schuld, Ilya Sinayskiy, Francesco Petruccione

Machine learning algorithms learn a desired input-output relation from examples in order to interpret new inputs. This is important for tasks such as image and speech recognition or strategy optimisation, with growing applications in the IT industry. In the last couple of years, researchers investigated if quantum computing can help to improve classical machine learning algorithms. Ideas range from running computationally costly algorithms or their subroutines efficiently on a quantum computer to the translation of stochastic methods into the language of quantum theory. This contribution gives a systematic overview of the emerging field of quantum machine learning. It presents the approaches as well as technical details in an accessable way, and discusses the potential of a future theory of quantum learning.

Design and analysis of quantum machine learning: a survey

Linshu Chen, Tao Li, Yuxiang Chen +4 more

Machine learning has demonstrated tremendous potential in solving real-world problems. However, with the exponential growth of data amount and the increase of model complexity, the processing efficiency of machine learning declines rapidly. Meanwhile, the emergence of quantum computing has given rise to quantum machine learning, which relies on superposition and entanglement, exhibiting exponential optimisation compared to traditional machine learning. Therefore, in the paper, we survey the basic concepts, algorithms, applications and challenges of quantum machine learning. Concretely, we first review the basic concepts of quantum computing including qubit, quantum gates, quantum entanglement, etc.. Secondly, we in-depth discuss 5 quantum machine learning algorithms of quantum support vector machine, quantum neural network, quantum k-nearest neighbour, quantum principal component analysis and quantum k-Means algorithm. Thirdly, we conduct discussions on the applications of quantum machine learning in image recognition, drug efficacy prediction and cybersecurity. Finally, we summarise the challenges of quantum machine learning consisting of algorithm design, hardware limitations, data encoding, quantum landscapes, noise and decoherence.

Fundamentals of Quantum Machine Learning, Applications, and Tools

Danish Vasan, Mohammad Ali A. Hammoudeh, Abdulelah S Alghamdi

The integration of quantum computing with machine learning emerged as an approach to solving complex computational problems. This chapter provides an overview of quantum machine learning (QML), exploring the fundamental concepts, algorithms, and applications at the intersection of quantum computing and machine learning. We begin by introducing the basic principles of quantum mechanics relevant to QML, including qubits, quantum gates, and quantum parallelism. Then, we explore key topics such as quantum entanglement, superposition, and their role in quantum algorithms. We then discuss the landscape of QML, contrasting classical and quantum approaches and highlighting the potential of quantum computing to enhance machine learning algorithms. Furthermore, we discuss prominent QML algorithms, such as quantum support vector machines (QSVM) and quantum neural networks (QNN), elucidating their mathematical formulations and differences from classical counterparts. Real-world examples showcasing quantum speedup in machine learning tasks are presented to underscore the transformative potential of quantum computing. Finally, an overview of QML tools and frameworks is provided, enabling researchers to embark on their journey in exploring the exciting field of QML.

Quantum Machine Learning: A Step towards the Hybrid Quantum Classical Approaches

Kailash Thakur, Parveen Sadotra, Shaina Mahajan +2 more

Machine Learning (ML) has changed the way computers work by letting them learn from data and make smart choices. However, traditional ML techniques encounter scalability and efficiency constraints as datasets get larger and computational problems become more complicated[1]. These restrictions could be circumvented by the new paradigms that quantum computing offers by using entanglement and superposition [2], [3]. The combination of the Quantum computing with the Machine Learning is called the Quantum Machine Learning(QML), offers efficiency improvements, new algorithmic opportunities, and speedups in certain linear algebraic operations. So, this review dives deeply into quantum-classical algorithms, with a particular emphasis on the approaches like quantum neural network and quantum support vector machines. We examine computational complexity, architectural design, benchmarking findings, and real-world applications (such as optimization, cryptography, and classification). We also discuss important issues including scalability, data encoding, and noise, and we suggest future paths for error prevention and scalable structures.

Quantum Computing for Data Scientists and Quantum Machine Learning

Bandla Umesh Chandra -

Quantum computation and quantum information have sparked tremendous interest across a wide range of scientific disciplines, from physics to chemistry and engineering, as well as computer science, mathematics, and statistics. Data science is the application of statistical methodologies, computer algorithms, and domain scientific data to extract knowledge and insights from large amounts of data and solve complicated real-world issues. As a result, quantum machine learning has carved itself a distinct niche in the world of computers. When the potential of quantum computing characteristics is employed for machine learning, quantum technology advances to an advanced degree. When quantum computing capabilities are incorporated into standard methods, they give extraordinary parallel computing power for addressing complicated problems. The core of this work is a comparison of the fundamental principles of quantum computing and their superiority over traditional computing. This paper discusses application-based algorithms including QSVM, QPCA, and Q-KNN, as well as Grover's algorithm, the most common and foundational quantum machine learning technique.
