An introduction to quantum machine learning

Maria Schuld, Ilya Sinayskiy, Francesco Petruccione

Published Jan 1, 2014• 384 citations
OpenAlex

Abstract

Machine learning algorithms learn a desired input-output relation from examples in order to interpret new inputs. This is important for tasks such as image and speech recognition or strategy optimisation, with growing applications in the IT industry. In the last couple of years, researchers investigated if quantum computing can help to improve classical machine learning algorithms. Ideas range from running computationally costly algorithms or their subroutines efficiently on a quantum computer to the translation of stochastic methods into the language of quantum theory. This contribution gives a systematic overview of the emerging field of quantum machine learning. It presents the approaches as well as technical details in an accessable way, and discusses the potential of a future theory of quantum learning.

Conceptualization Of Quantum Computing with Machine Learning

S.Saranya Devi, K.Shandhini, R.Kalai Selvi +2 more

Machine-learning algorithms infer a target relationship between inputs and outputs by studying example data, enabling them to interpret previously unseen inputs. This capability is essential for tasks like image and speech recognition, as well as strategy optimization, and it is increasingly important across the IT industry. In recent years, researchers have explored whether quantum computing can enhance classical machine-learning methods. Proposed ideas include accelerating computationally expensive algorithms or their subroutines using quantum hardware, and reformulating stochastic techniques within a quantum-theoretic framework.

Quantum Machine Learning: A Review

Soumyadip Sarkar

Abstract: Quantum machine learning is an emerging field that aims to leverage the unique properties of quantum computing to accelerate machine learning tasks. In this paper, we review recent advances in quantum machine learning and discuss the potential applications and challenges associated with this technology. Specifically, we examine the current state of quantum machine learning algorithms, including variational quantum algorithms, quantum neural networks, and quantum generative models. We also discuss the challenges associated with practical quantum computing resources, algorithm design, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Furthermore, we highlight the potential applications of quantum machine learning in areas such as drug discovery, speech and image recognition, financial modeling, and many others. We also examine the ethical and societal implications of this technology, including the potential impact on privacy and security. Finally, we discuss future prospects for quantum machine learning, including the potential for quantum-inspired classical algorithms and the development of error correction techniques. We conclude by emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in the continued advancement of this field.

A Detailed Overview of Quantum Computing Machine Learning Techniques

Ada Aggarwal, S Vikram Singh, Saloni Bansal +1 more

The computing sector has undergone radical changes in the last few decades. Conventional computers use binary (1s and 0s) numbers to perform tasks that are specified by the user. Using the concepts of quantum physics, a unique method known as “quantum computing” addresses problems that are too complicated for conventional computing devices. Two of the scientific fields with the fastest growth rates in today's time are machine learning and quantum computing. Researchers have recently initiated investigations into the ways in which conventional machine learning methods can be improved by quantum computing. Quantum machine learning comprises hybrid approaches that combine quantum and classical algorithms, using quantum methods to evaluate quantum states rather than traditional data. Current data science techniques could be significantly improved by quantum algorithms. In this work, we summarize the contributions made by different researchers in the domain of Quantum Learning and then look at some of the methods related to its real-world uses.

Machine Learning: Quantum vs Classical

Tariq Mahmood Khan, Antonio Robles‐Kelly

Encouraged by growing computing power and algorithmic development, machine learning technologies have become powerful tools for a wide variety of application areas, spanning from agriculture to chemistry and natural language processing. The use of quantum systems to process classical data using machine learning algorithms has given rise to an emerging research area, i.e. quantum machine learning. Despite its origins in the processing of classical data, quantum machine learning also explores the use of quantum phenomena for learning systems, the use of quantum computers for learning on quantum data and how machine learning algorithms and software can be formulated and implemented on quantum computers. Quantum machine learning can have a transformational effect on computer science. It may speed up the processing of information well beyond the existing classical speeds. Recent work has seen the development of quantum algorithms that could serve as foundations for machine learning applications. Despite its great promise, there are still significant hardware and software challenges that need to be resolved before quantum machine learning becomes practical. In this paper, we present an overview of quantum machine learning in the light of classical approaches. Departing from foundational concepts of machine learning and quantum computing, we discuss various technical contributions, strengths and similarities of the research work in this domain. We also elaborate upon the recent progress of different quantum machine learning approaches, their complexity, and applications in various fields such as physics, chemistry and natural language processing.

QUANTUM MACHINE LEARNING

Amrit Raj, Jayakumar. Vaithiyashankar, Vishal Kaushik, Sathyaprakash Palaniyappan

Quantum machine learning, a cutting-edge topic of study, brings together the frontiers of quantum computing with classical machine learning. Quantum computing and machine learning may be able to help solve problems in each other's fields of expertise. Due to the surge of new data, there is growing fear that current machine learning algorithms may be exceeding their computational constraints. Thus, in certain machine learning tasks, quantum computing can be an advantage. Quantum machine learning research focuses on the creation and deployment of quantum software that could speed up machine learning in comparison to standard computing systems. Because of improvements in computing power and algorithmic innovation, machine learning approaches have emerged as powerful tools for detecting patterns in data. Because quantum systems exhibit unusual patterns that classical systems are unable to produce efficiently, it is plausible to assume that quantum computers will outperform classical computers on machine learning tasks. The following is a summary of the current state of quantum machine learning research.
