Matrix product representation of the stationary state of the open zero range process

Abstract

Abstract Many one-dimensional lattice particle models with open boundaries, like the paradigmatic asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP), have their stationary states represented in the form of a matrix product, with matrices that do not explicitly depend on the lattice site. In contrast, the stationary state of the open 1D zero-range process (ZRP) takes an inhomogeneous factorized form, with site-dependent probability weights. We show that in spite of the absence of correlations, the stationary state of the open ZRP can also be represented in a matrix product form, where the matrices are site-independent, non-commuting and determined from algebraic relations resulting from the master equation. We recover the known distribution of the open ZRP in two different ways: first, using an explicit representation of the matrices and boundary vectors; second, from the sole knowledge of the algebraic relations satisfied by these matrices and vectors. Finally, an interpretation of the relation between the matrix product form and the inhomogeneous factorized form is proposed within the framework of hidden Markov chains.

Spatial correlations in exclusion models corresponding to the zero-range process

Urna Basu, P. K. Mohanty

We show that the steady state weights of all one-dimensional exclusion models which are mapped to the zero-range process (ZRP) can be written in a matrix product form, where the required matrices depend only on the steady state weights of the ZRP. An infinite-dimensional representation of these matrices which works for generic systems has also been provided. This is in contrast to the case for the usual matrix product ansatz which does not always guarantee a solution for the dynamics dependent algebra that the matrices need to satisfy. The formulation helps us study the spatial correlations of these exclusion processes which are unfeasibly difficult to obtain directly from their ZRP correspondence. To illustrate this method we reproduce certain known results, and then investigate unexplored correlations in some other model systems.

One-dimensional partially asymmetric simple exclusion process with open boundaries: orthogonal polynomials approach

Tomohiro Sasamoto

The stationary state of the partially asymmetric simple exclusion process with open boundaries is reconsidered. The so-called matrix product ansatz is employed. This enables us to construct the stationary state in the form of the product of the matrices D and E . Noticing the fact that the matrix C ( = D + E ) for the model is related to certain q -orthogonal polynomials, the model is analysed for a wide range of parameters. The current and the correlation length are evaluated in the thermodynamic limit. It turns out that the phase diagram for the correlation length is richer than that for the totally asymmetric case.

Derivation of a matrix product representation for the asymmetric exclusion process from the algebraic Bethe ansatz

O. Golinelli, Kirone Mallick

We derive, using the algebraic Bethe ansatz, a generalized matrix product ansatz for the asymmetric exclusion process (ASEP) on a one-dimensional periodic lattice. In this matrix product ansatz, the components of the eigenvectors of the ASEP Markov matrix can be expressed as traces of products of non-commuting operators. We derive the relations between the operators involved and show that they generate a quadratic algebra. Our construction provides explicit finite-dimensional representations for the generators of this algebra.

Matrix product states for interacting particles without hardcore constraints

Amit Kumar Chatterjee, P. K. Mohanty

Abstract We construct matrix product steady states for a class of interacting particle systems where particles do not obey hardcore exclusion, meaning each site can occupy any number of particles subjected to the global conservation of the total number of particles in the system. To represent the arbitrary occupancy of the sites, the matrix product ansatz here requires an infinite set of matrices which in turn leads to an algebra involving an infinite number of matrix equations. We show that these matrix equations, in fact, can be reduced to a single functional relation when the matrices are parametric functions of the representative occupation number. We demonstrate this matrix formulation in a class of stochastic particle hopping processes on a one dimensional periodic lattice where hop rates depend on the occupation numbers of the departure site and its neighbors within a finite range; this includes some well known stochastic processes like, the totally or partially asymmetric zero range process, misanthrope process and finite range process.

Representations of the quadratic algebra and partially asymmetric diffusion with open boundaries

Fabian H. L. Eßler, V. Rittenberg

We consider the one-dimensional partially asymmetric exclusion model with open boundaries. The model describes a system of hard-core particles that hop stochastically in both directions with different rates. At both boundaries particles are injected and extracted. By means of the method of Derrida et al the stationary probability measure can be expressed as a matrix-product state involving two matrices forming a Fock-like representation of a general quadratic algebra. We obtain the representations of this algebra, which were unknown in the mathematical literature and use the two-dimensional one to derive exact expressions for the density profile and correlation functions. Using the correspondence between the stochastic model and a quantum spin chain, we obtain exact correlation functions for a spin- Heisenberg XXZ chain with non-diagonal boundary terms. Generalizations to other reaction - diffusion models are discussed.

Transfer matrices for the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process

Marko Woelki, Kirone Mallick

We consider the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on a finite lattice with open boundaries. We show, using the recursive structure of the Markov matrix that encodes the dynamics, that there exist two transfer matrices T L − 1, L and that intertwine the Markov matrices of consecutive system sizes: . This semi-conjugation property of the dynamics provides an algebraic counterpart for the matrix-product representation of the steady state of the process.
