Abstract

We consider the one-dimensional partially asymmetric exclusion model with open boundaries. The model describes a system of hard-core particles that hop stochastically in both directions with different rates. At both boundaries particles are injected and extracted. By means of the method of Derrida et al the stationary probability measure can be expressed as a matrix-product state involving two matrices forming a Fock-like representation of a general quadratic algebra. We obtain the representations of this algebra, which were unknown in the mathematical literature and use the two-dimensional one to derive exact expressions for the density profile and correlation functions. Using the correspondence between the stochastic model and a quantum spin chain, we obtain exact correlation functions for a spin- Heisenberg XXZ chain with non-diagonal boundary terms. Generalizations to other reaction - diffusion models are discussed.

Stochastic Reaction-Diffusion Processes, Operator Algebras and Integrable Quantum Spin Chains

Gunter Markus Schutz

We show that the stochastic dynamics of a large class of one-dimensional interacting particle systems may be presented by integrable quantum spin Hamiltonians. Using the Bethe ansatz and similarity transformations this yields new exact results. In a complementary approach we generalize previous work and present a new description of these and other processes and the related quantum chains in terms of an operator algebra with quadratic relations. The full solution of the master equation of the process is thus turned into the problem of finding representations of this algebra. We find a two-dimensional time-dependent representation of the algebra for the symmetric exclusion process with open boundary conditions. We obtain new results on the dynamics of this system and on the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the corresponding quantum spin chain, which is the isotropic Heisenberg ferromagnet with non-diagonal boundary fields.

N-species stochastic models with boundaries and quadratic algebras

F C Alcaraz, S Dasmahapatra, V Rittenberg

Stationary probability distributions for stochastic processes on linear chains with closed or open ends are obtained using the matrix product ansatz. The matrices are representations of some quadratic algebras. The algebras and the types of representations considered depend on the boundary conditions. In the language of quantum chains we obtain the ground state of N -state quantum chains with free boundary conditions or with non-diagonal boundary terms at one or both ends. In contrast to problems involving the Bethe ansatz, we do not have a general framework for arbitrary N , which when specialized, gives the known results for N = 2; in fact, the N = 2 and N>2 cases appear to be very different.

Dynamic Matrix Ansatz for Integrable Reaction-Diffusion Processes

Gunter Markus Schutz

We show that the stochastic dynamics of a large class of one-dimensional interacting particle systems may be presented by integrable quantum spin Hamiltonians. Generalizing earlier work [1, 2] we present an alternative description of these processes in terms of a time-dependent operator algebra with quadratic relations. These relations generate the Bethe ansatz equations for the spectrum and turn the calculation of time-dependent expectation values into the problem of either finding representations of this algebra or of solving functional equations for the initial values of the operators. We use both strategies for the study of two specific models: (i) We construct a two-dimensional time-dependent representation of the algebra for the symmetric exclusion process with open boundary conditions. In this way we obtain new results on the dynamics of this system and on the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the corresponding quantum spin chain, which is the isotropic Heisenberg ferromagnet with non-diagonal, symmetry-breaking boundary fields. (ii) We consider the non-equilibrium spin relaxation of Ising spins with zero-temperature Glauber dynamics and an additional coupling to an infinite-temperature heat bath

On matrix product ground states for reaction - diffusion models

Haye Hinrichsen B, Sven Sandow, Ingo Peschel

We discuss a new mechanism leading to a matrix product form for the stationary state of one-dimensional stochastic models. The corresponding algebra is quadratic and involves four different matrices. For the example of a coagulation - decoagulation model explicit four-dimensional representations are given and exact expressions for various physical quantities are recovered. We also find the general structure of n-point correlation functions at the phase transition.

Exact results for a fully asymmetric exclusion process with sequential dynamics and open boundaries

J.G. Brankov, Nina Pesheva, Nikola Valkov

An exact and rigorous calculation of the current and density profile in the steady state of the one-dimensional fully asymmetric simple-exclusion process with open boundaries and forward-ordered sequential dynamics is presented. The method is based on a matrix product representation of the steady-state probability distribution. The main idea is to choose a suitable representation in which the scalar products describing the current and local density profile for a chain of arbitrary finite size depend only on the elements in a finite number of rows and columns. This makes possible the use of a truncated finite-dimensional representation of the matrices and vectors involved. After performing the calculations, we lift the truncation by letting its dimensionality go to infinity. In this limit the results become exact for any size of the chain. By rescaling one of the infinite-dimensional matrix representations found in the work of Derrida et al. [J. Phys. A 26, 1493 (1993)] for their algebra, we obtain a symmetric ``propagator'' matrix. Its truncated version is diagonalized by orthogonal transformation for easy calculation of the relevant scalar products. An interpretation of the phase transitions between the different phases is given in terms of eigenvalue splitting from a bounded quasicontinuous spectrum. A precise description of the local density profiles is given for all values of the parameters. It is shown that the leading-order asymptotic form of the position-dependent terms in the local density changes within the low- and high-density phases, signaling the presence of a higher-order transition.

Operator Algebra for Stochastic Dynamics and the Heisenberg Chain

Robin B. Stinchcombe, Gunter Markus Schutz

The operator algebra C ( S − ) = CD − DC = ( S + ) C , D + D = DS − SD is shown to represent the stochastic dynamics of symmetric hopping of hard-core particles in one dimension and to describe the Heisenberg quantum chain. The particle or spin state is specified by strings of the operators C and D , and S is related to a current. Recursive reductions and matrix representations are used to obtain stationary and time-dependent properties, including the evolving profile for a system driven by a density gradient between open boundaries. Generalizations to other models are outlined.
