We investigate the condition for the photoinduced enhancement of an excitonic order in a two-orbital Hubbard model, which has been theoretically proposed in our previous work [Phys. Rev. B 97, 115105 (2018)], and analyze it from the viewpoint of the Rabi oscillation. Within the mean-field approximation, we simulate real-time dynamics of an excitonic insulator with a direct gap, where the pair condensation in the initial state is of BEC nature and the photoexcitation is introduced by electric dipole transitions. We first discuss that in the atomic limit our model is reduced to a two-level system that undergoes the Rabi oscillation, so that for single cycle pulses physical quantities after the photoirradiation are essentially determined by the ratio of the Rabi frequency to the pump-light frequency. Then, it is shown that this picture holds even in the case of nonzero transfer integrals where each one-particle state exhibits the Rabi oscillation leading to the enhancement of the excitonic order. We demonstrate that effects of electron-phonon interactions do not alter the results qualitatively. We also examine many-body dynamics by the exact diagonalization method on small clusters, which strongly suggests that our mechanism for the enhancement of the excitonic order survives even when quantum fluctuations are taken into account.
We study the photoinduced dynamics of the excitonic insulator in the two-orbital Hubbard model on the Penrose tiling by means of the time-dependent real-space mean-field approximation. We show that, with a single-cycle electric-field pulse, the bulk (spatially averaged) excitonic order parameter decreases in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) regime, while it increases in the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) regime. This behavior is in common with the excitonic insulator in the square lattice reported previously. To explore the dynamics peculiar to the Penrose tiling, we examine the coordination number dependence of observables and analyze the perpendicular space. In the BEC regime, characteristic oscillations of the electron number at each site are induced by the pulse, which are not observed in normal crystals with single coordination number. On the other hand, the dynamics in the BCS regime is characterized by drastic change in the spatial pattern of the excitonic order parameter. Our results imply that potentially interesting nonequilibrium physics is caused by rich local structural patterns involved in quasicrystals.
The condensation of spin-orbit-induced excitons in
t2g4 electronic systems is attracting considerable attention. At large Hubbard
U, antiferromagnetism was proposed to emerge from the Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) of triplons (
Jeff=1). Here, we show that even at intermediate
U regimes, the spin-orbit exciton condensation is possible leading also to staggered magnetic order. The canonical electron-hole excitations (excitons) transform into local triplon excitations at large
U, and this BEC strong coupling regime is smoothly connected to the intermediate
U excitonic insulator region. We solved the degenerate three-orbital Hubbard model with spin-orbit coupling ($\ensuremath{\lambda}$) in one dimension using the density matrix renormalization group, while in two dimensions we use the Hartree-Fock approximation (HFA). Employing these techniques, we provide the full $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ versus
U phase diagrams for both one- and two-dimensional lattices. Our main result is that at intermediate Hubbard
U, increasing $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ at fixed
U the system transitions from an incommensurate spin-density-wave metal to a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) excitonic insulator, with coherence length
rcoh of
O(a) and
O(10a) in
1d and
2d, respectively, with
a being the lattice spacing. Further increasing $\ensuremath{\lambda}$, the system eventually crosses over to the BEC limit (with ${r}_{\mathrm{coh}}\ensuremath{\ll}a$).
The variational cluster approximation is used to study the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the excitonic insulator (EI) state in the two-orbital Hubbard model defined on the two-dimensional square lattice. Evaluating the order parameter of the EI state, staggered magnetization, and number of particles on each orbital, we obtain the ground-state phase diagram of the model in a wide parameter space of the intra and interorbital Coulomb interactions. We also calculate the single-particle and anomalous Green's functions. We show that the normal metallic phase is unstable to the formation of the EI state and the EI phase appears in a wide parameter region between the band-insulator and Mott-insulator phases.
Using exact numerical techniques, we investigate the nature of excitonic (electron-hole) bound states and the development of exciton coherence in the one-dimensional half-filled extended Falicov-Kimball model. The ground-state phase diagram of the model exhibits, besides band-insulator and staggered orbital ordered phases, an excitonic insulator (EI) with power-law correlations. The criticality of the EI state shows up in the von Neumann entropy. The anomalous spectral function and condensation amplitude provide the binding energy and coherence length of the electron-hole pairs which, on their part, point towards a Coulomb interaction driven crossover from BCS-like electron-hole pairing fluctuations to tightly bound excitons. We show that while a mass imbalance between electrons and holes does not affect the location of the BCS-BEC crossover regime, it favors staggered orbital ordering to the disadvantage of the EI. Within the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) regime, the quasiparticle dispersion develops a flat valence-band top, in accord with the experimental finding for Ta2NiSe5.
