Abstract

We investigate the condition for the photoinduced enhancement of an excitonic order in a two-orbital Hubbard model, which has been theoretically proposed in our previous work [Phys. Rev. B 97, 115105 (2018)], and analyze it from the viewpoint of the Rabi oscillation. Within the mean-field approximation, we simulate real-time dynamics of an excitonic insulator with a direct gap, where the pair condensation in the initial state is of BEC nature and the photoexcitation is introduced by electric dipole transitions. We first discuss that in the atomic limit our model is reduced to a two-level system that undergoes the Rabi oscillation, so that for single cycle pulses physical quantities after the photoirradiation are essentially determined by the ratio of the Rabi frequency to the pump-light frequency. Then, it is shown that this picture holds even in the case of nonzero transfer integrals where each one-particle state exhibits the Rabi oscillation leading to the enhancement of the excitonic order. We demonstrate that effects of electron-phonon interactions do not alter the results qualitatively. We also examine many-body dynamics by the exact diagonalization method on small clusters, which strongly suggests that our mechanism for the enhancement of the excitonic order survives even when quantum fluctuations are taken into account.

Photoinduced enhancement of excitonic order in the two-orbital Hubbard model

Yasuhiro Tanaka, Manabu Daira, Kenji Yonemitsu

Photoinduced dynamics in an excitonic insulator is studied theoretically by using a two-orbital Hubbard model on the square lattice where the excitonic phase in the ground state is characterized by the BCS-BEC crossover as a function of the interorbital Coulomb interaction. We consider the case where the order has a wave vector $\mathbit{Q}=(0,0)$ and photoexcitation is introduced by a dipole transition. Within the mean-field approximation, we show that the excitonic order can be enhanced by the photoexcitation when the system is initially in the BEC regime of the excitonic phase, whereas it is reduced if the system is initially in the BCS regime. The origin of this difference is discussed from behaviors of momentum distribution functions and momentum-dependent excitonic pair condensation. In particular, we show that the phases of the excitonic pair condensation have an important role in determining whether the excitonic order is enhanced or not.

Photoinduced dynamics of a quasicrystalline excitonic insulator

Ken Inayoshi, Yuta Murakami, Akihisa Koga

We study the photoinduced dynamics of the excitonic insulator in the two-orbital Hubbard model on the Penrose tiling by means of the time-dependent real-space mean-field approximation. We show that, with a single-cycle electric-field pulse, the bulk (spatially averaged) excitonic order parameter decreases in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) regime, while it increases in the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) regime. This behavior is in common with the excitonic insulator in the square lattice reported previously. To explore the dynamics peculiar to the Penrose tiling, we examine the coordination number dependence of observables and analyze the perpendicular space. In the BEC regime, characteristic oscillations of the electron number at each site are induced by the pulse, which are not observed in normal crystals with single coordination number. On the other hand, the dynamics in the BCS regime is characterized by drastic change in the spatial pattern of the excitonic order parameter. Our results imply that potentially interesting nonequilibrium physics is caused by rich local structural patterns involved in quasicrystals.

Photoinduced correlated electron dynamics in a two-leg ladder Hubbard system

Hiroshi Hashimoto, Sumio Ishihara

Photoinduced carrier dynamics in a correlated electron system on a coupled two-leg ladder lattice are studied. The two-leg ladder Hubbard model is analyzed utilizing the exact diagonalization method based on the Lanczos algorithm in finite-size clusters. In order to reveal the transient carrier dynamics after photoirradiation, we calculate the low-energy components of the hole kinetic energy, the pair-field correlation function, the optical conductivity spectra, and other characteristics. It is shown that the photoinduced metallic-like state appears in a half-filled Mott insulating state, while the low-energy carrier motion is suppressed by photoirradiation in the case of hole-doped metallic states. These photoinduced changes in the electron dynamics are associated with changes in the carrier-pair coherence; they are not attributed to a naive thermalization, and are associated with a ladder-lattice effect instead. Based on the numerical results, optical control of hole pairs using double-pulse pumping is demonstrated. Implications for recent optical pump-probe experiments are presented.

Photoinduced electron-electron pairing in the extended Falicov-Kimball model

Ryo Fujiuchi, Tatsuya Kaneko, Y. Ohta +1 more

By employing the time-dependent exact diagonalization method, we investigate the photoexcited states of the excitonic insulator in the extended Falicov-Kimball model (EFKM). We here show that the pulse irradiation can induce the interband electron-electron pair correlation in the photoexcited states, while the excitonic electron-hole pair correlation in the initial ground state is strongly suppressed. We also show that the photoexcited states contain the eigenstates of the EFKM with a finite number of interband electron-electron pairs, which are responsible for the enhancement of the electron-electron pair correlation. The mechanism found here is due to the presence of the internal SU(2) pairing structure in the EFKM and thus it is essentially the same as that for the photoinduced $\ensuremath{\eta}$ pairing in the repulsive Hubbard model reported recently [T. Kaneko et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 077002 (2019)]. This also explains why the nonlinear optical response is effective to induce the electron-electron pairs in the photoexcited states of the EFKM. Furthermore, we show that, unlike the $\ensuremath{\eta}$ pairing in the Hubbard model, the internal SU(2) structure is preserved even for a nonbipartite lattice when the EFKM has the direct-type band structure, in which the pulse irradiation can induce the electron-electron pair correlation with momentum $\mathbit{q}=\mathbit{0}$ in the photoexcited states. We also discuss briefly the effect of a perturbation that breaks the internal SU(2) structure.

Photoenhanced excitonic correlations in a Mott insulator with nonlocal interactions

Nikolaj Bittner, Denis Golež, Martin Eckstein +1 more

We investigate the effect of nonlocal interactions on the photodoped Mott insulating state of the two-dimensional Hubbard model using a nonequilibrium generalization of the dynamical cluster approximation. In particular, we compare the situation where the excitonic states are lying within the continuum of doublon-holon excitations to a setup where the excitons appear within the Mott gap. In the first case, the creation of nearest-neighbor doublon-holon pairs by excitations across the Mott gap results in enhanced excitonic correlations, but these excitons quickly decay into uncorrelated doublons and holons. In the second case, photoexcitation results in long-lived excitonic states. While in a low-temperature equilibrium state, excitonic features are usually not evident in single-particle observables such as the photoemission spectrum, we show that the photoexcited nonequilibrium system can exhibit in-gap states associated with the excitons. The comparison with exact-diagonalization results for small clusters allows us to identify the signatures of the excitons in the photoemission spectrum.

Photoinduced melting dynamics and collective mode in a correlated charge-ordered system

Yasuhiro Tanaka, Hitoshi Seo

We theoretically investigate the transient spectral function during the photoinduced melting of charge order in a correlated electron system, to unravel the dynamical processes triggered by different initial excitations. We employ a one-dimensional interacting spinless fermion model introducing a pulsed laser light, and perform a comparative study by the Hartree-Fock approximation and by the exact diagonalization method to numerically solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. We find characteristic behavior in the transient spectral function, whose features strongly depend on the pump light frequency $ω_p$. When $ω_p$ is resonant with the collective phase mode of frequency $Ω_c\simeq Δ_{\rm CO}/2$, where $Δ_{\rm CO}$ is the charge gap, the transient spectral function exhibits a photoinduced in-gap weight which triggers large responses. With increasing the laser intensity, the development of in-gap weight directly turns into the collapse of the gap. This charge-order destabilization process is in sharp contrast to the case of $ω_p>Δ_{\rm CO}$, where the photoirradiation induces interband electron-hole excitations giving rise to a shrinkage of the gap. The impact of quantum fluctuations and spatial inhomogeneity on the photoinduced dynamics is also discussed.
