Abstract

We consider one-dimensional chains of two-level quantum systems coupled via tunneling. The chain is driven by the superposition of dc and ac fields in the strong coupling regime. Based on the fundamental principles of electrodynamics and quantum theory, we have developed a generalized model of quantum dynamics for such interactions, free of rotating-wave approximation. The system of equations of motion was studied numerically. We analyzed the dynamics and spectra of the inversion density, dipole current density, and tunneling current density. In the case of resonant interaction with the ac component, the particle dynamics exhibits itself in the oscillatory regime, which may be interpreted as a combination of Rabi and Bloch oscillations with their strong mutual influence. Such scenario for an obliquely incident ac field dramatically differs from the individual picture of both types of oscillations due to the interactions. This effect is counterintuitive because of the existence of markedly different frequency ranges for such two types of oscillations. These dynamics manifest themselves in multiline spectra in different combinations of Rabi and Bloch frequencies. The effect is promising as a framework of a new type of spectroscopy in nanoelectronics and electrical control of nanodevices.

Time-Domain dynamics and spectrums of Rabi-Bloch oscillations in nano-circuits and nano-antennas

Ilay Levie, R. Kästner, Gregory Ya. Slepyan

We consider the numerical modeling of synthesis of Bloch and Rabi-oscillations. Consequently, the effect of combined Rabi-Bloch oscillations (RBO) is created. The inversion in the lattice of two-level fermionic atoms, driven by dc-ac electric field, have been calculated. RBO manifests itself in the non-additive superposition movement of intra-band and inter-band transitions. An experimental implementation and potential applications of RBO in nanoelectronics have been discussed.

Mixed states in Rabi waves and quantum nanoantennas

Gregory Ya. Slepyan, Yauhen Yerchak, С. А. Максименко +2 more

The mixed states of Rabi waves in a one-dimensional chain of two-level quantum dots (QDs) with tunnel coupling between neighbor QDs are theoretically considered. The propagation of Rabi waves is described by a $2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2$ statistical operator depending on two spatial and one temporal variables. For a statistical operator the generalized Bloch equations are derived. The eigenmodes of the statistical operator are considered, the general solution of the initial problem is obtained, and the frequency spectrum of the induced current is investigated. The high-frequency part of the spectrum corresponds to a Mollow triplet, but is distinct from the last one as it is the continuous spectral band located on both sides of the transition frequency. The low-frequency part is caused by tunnel current and includes a dc-component and continuous ac-band in the vicinity of the Rabi oscillation frequency. The application of Rabi waves to the electrically controlled quantum nanoantennas of terahertz range is considered.

Rabi oscillations in a strongly driven semiconductor quantum well

Emmanuel Paspalakis, Margarita Tsaousidou, Andreas Terzis

We study the interaction of an ac electric field with a semiconductor quantum well by using the effective nonlinear Bloch equations. Only the first two electron subbands in the well are considered. We apply the rotating wave approximation and derive analytical solutions for the Bloch equations for two different values of the detuning. At exact resonance we find a critical value of the Rabi frequency around which the dynamics of the system changes abruptly. Above this critical value one obtains electron oscillations with complete inversion in the two-subband system, while below this value we obtain electron oscillations without complete inversion and with the majority of the electron population on average in the lower subband. We also present numerical calculations for a specific quantum well structure and assess the limits of validity of the analytical results.

Quantum Rabi oscillations of a qubit strongly coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide

Ya. S. Greenberg, A. A. Shtygashev, O. A. Chuikin +2 more

We theoretically investigate quantum Rabi oscillations in a system consisting of a two-level atom (qubit) strongly coupled to a one-dimensional open waveguide. In contrast to conventional cavity quantum electrodynamics, the qubit interacts with a continuum of propagating modes, which gives rise to fundamentally different dynamical behavior. Within the rotating-wave approximation, we express the multimode Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian in terms of collective bosonic operators and show that the system possesses two integrals of motion, enabling an exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian in the single-excitation subspace. We show that for a strongly interacting qubit-photon system, the dynamics are captured by a reduced two-level model. In this framework, each level is defined as the product of the atomic excited state and a specific field mode, which takes the form of a multiphoton Fock-like state. In this picture, the Rabi oscillations represent a collective phenomenon corresponding to oscillations between multiphoton states differing by a single photon. We then extend our analysis to multiphoton processes in which the initial field is a coherent state with a continuous spectrum. In this case, the Rabi frequency is shown to be sensitive to the spectral profile of the function that generates the coherent state.

Bloch Oscillations in the Chains of Artificial Atoms Dressed with Photons

Ilay Levie, Gregory Ya. Slepyan

We present a model of one-dimensional chain of two-level artificial atoms driven with DC field and quantum light simultaneously in a strong coupling regime. The interaction of atoms with light leads to electron-photon entanglement (dressing of the atoms with light). The driving via dc field leads to the Bloch oscillations (BO) in the chain of dressed atoms. We consider the mutual influence of dressing and BO and show that scenario of oscillations dramatically differs from predicted by the Jaynes-Cummings and Bloch-Zener models. We study the evolution of the population inversion, tunneling current, photon probability distribution, mean number of photons, and photon number variance, and show the influence of BO on the quantum-statistical characteristics of light. For example, the collapse-revivals picture and vacuum Rabi-oscillations are strongly modulated with Bloch frequency. As a result, quantum properties of light and degree of electron-photon entanglement become controllable via adiabatic dc field turning. On the other hand, the low-frequency tunneling current depends on the quantum light statistics (in particular, for coherent initial state it is modulated accordingly the collapse-revivals picture). The developed model is universal with respect to the physical origin of artificial atom and frequency range of atom-light interaction. The model is adapted to the 2D-heterostructures (THz frequencies), semiconductor quantum dots (optical range), and Josephson junctions (microwaves). The data for numerical simulations are taken from recently published experiments. The obtained results open a new way in quantum state engineering and nano-photonic spectroscopy.

Double Landau-Zener interferometry in a dc-ac–driven Bloch-Zener oscillation

Y. Mizumoto, Yōsuke Kayanuma

The effect of an additional high frequency alternating field on the Bloch-Zener oscillation of a quantum particle is investigated theoretically. The effective magnitude of the band gap is reduced by the ac field, and even collapsed to zero by appropriately tuning the amplitude and the frequency of the oscillation. This results in the enhancement of the Zener tunneling with dramatic changes of the Bloch-Zener oscillation. The temporal behavior of the wave packet is clarified as due to the interplay of the Landau-Zener interference in the repeated level crossings with two different time scales, namely, the period of the Bloch oscillation, and the period of the high frequency ac field.
