Abstract

We present a model of one-dimensional chain of two-level artificial atoms driven with DC field and quantum light simultaneously in a strong coupling regime. The interaction of atoms with light leads to electron-photon entanglement (dressing of the atoms with light). The driving via dc field leads to the Bloch oscillations (BO) in the chain of dressed atoms. We consider the mutual influence of dressing and BO and show that scenario of oscillations dramatically differs from predicted by the Jaynes-Cummings and Bloch-Zener models. We study the evolution of the population inversion, tunneling current, photon probability distribution, mean number of photons, and photon number variance, and show the influence of BO on the quantum-statistical characteristics of light. For example, the collapse-revivals picture and vacuum Rabi-oscillations are strongly modulated with Bloch frequency. As a result, quantum properties of light and degree of electron-photon entanglement become controllable via adiabatic dc field turning. On the other hand, the low-frequency tunneling current depends on the quantum light statistics (in particular, for coherent initial state it is modulated accordingly the collapse-revivals picture). The developed model is universal with respect to the physical origin of artificial atom and frequency range of atom-light interaction. The model is adapted to the 2D-heterostructures (THz frequencies), semiconductor quantum dots (optical range), and Josephson junctions (microwaves). The data for numerical simulations are taken from recently published experiments. The obtained results open a new way in quantum state engineering and nano-photonic spectroscopy.

Electrically Driven Vacuum Rabi Oscillations as a Potential Quantum-Optical Device

Ilay Levie, Gregory Ya. Slepyan

The dynamics of a charge bounded by a chain of coupled artificial atoms, interacting simultaneously with a single mode quantized electromagnetic field inside a cavity, and a constant electrostatic DC field is presented in this work. We develop an extended Jaynes-Cummings model describing this system and solve it both analytically and numerically, with good agreement between the two methods. It is shown that the charge-photon dressed state is modulated with the Bloch frequency due to the interaction with the DC field. This enables to control the quantum state of light by adiabatically changing the DC field. This novel effect might be important for the application of optical modulators, quantum computing and electrically controlled quantum antennas.

Rabi-Bloch oscillations in spatially distributed systems: Temporal dynamics and frequency spectra

Ilay Levie, R. Kästner, Gregory Ya. Slepyan

We consider one-dimensional chains of two-level quantum systems coupled via tunneling. The chain is driven by the superposition of dc and ac fields in the strong coupling regime. Based on the fundamental principles of electrodynamics and quantum theory, we have developed a generalized model of quantum dynamics for such interactions, free of rotating-wave approximation. The system of equations of motion was studied numerically. We analyzed the dynamics and spectra of the inversion density, dipole current density, and tunneling current density. In the case of resonant interaction with the ac component, the particle dynamics exhibits itself in the oscillatory regime, which may be interpreted as a combination of Rabi and Bloch oscillations with their strong mutual influence. Such scenario for an obliquely incident ac field dramatically differs from the individual picture of both types of oscillations due to the interactions. This effect is counterintuitive because of the existence of markedly different frequency ranges for such two types of oscillations. These dynamics manifest themselves in multiline spectra in different combinations of Rabi and Bloch frequencies. The effect is promising as a framework of a new type of spectroscopy in nanoelectronics and electrical control of nanodevices.

Jaynes–Cummings photonic superlattices

Stefano Longhi

A classical realization of the Jaynes-Cummings (JC) model, describing the interaction of a two-level atom with a quantized cavity mode, is proposed based on light transport in engineered waveguide superlattices. The optical setting enables us to visualize in Fock space dynamical regimes not yet accessible in quantum systems, providing new physical insights into the deep strong coupling regime of the JC model. In particular, bouncing of photon number wave packets in Hilbert space and revivals of populations are explained as generalized Bloch oscillations in an inhomogeneous tight-binding lattice.

Strong electron-photon coupling in a one-dimensional quantum dot chain: Rabi waves and Rabi wave packets

Gregory Ya. Slepyan, Yauhen Yerchak, A. Hoffmann +1 more

We predict and theoretically investigate the new coherent effect of nonlinear quantum optics---spatial propagation of Rabi oscillations (Rabi waves) in one-dimensional quantum dot (QD) chain. QD chain is modeled by the set of two-level quantum systems with tunnel coupling between neighboring QDs. The space propagation of Rabi waves in the form of traveling waves and wave packets is considered. It is shown, that traveling Rabi waves are quantum states of QD chain dressed by radiation. The dispersion characteristics of traveling Rabi waves are investigated and their dependence on average number of photons in wave is demonstrated. The propagation of Rabi wave packets is accompanied by the transfer of the inversion and quantum correlations along the QD chain and by the transformation of quantum light statistics. The conditions of experimental observability are analyzed. The effect is potentially useful for quantum computing and quantum informatics.

Single dressed-atom laser: lasing out of a driven Jaynes-Cummings system

Young-Tak Chough, Jung Bog Kim, Kyungwon An

A variant Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM) where the two-state atom coupled to the cavity mode is driven by a strong external field reveals many interesting behaviors. On resonance, a large scale oscillatory behavior of the mean cavity photon number is predicted. It varies sinusoidally with the amplitude of 2(/spl epsi//g)/sup 2/, centered at the same value, where /spl epsi/ is the (real) driving field amplitude and g the vacuum Rabi frequency. The period of the oscillation was found to be exactly twice the "revival time" of the atomic inversion, i.e., T/sub 0/=(4/spl pi//g)(/spl epsi//g). Furthermore, the oscillation then shows another kind of "collapse-and-revival" type behavior as time proceeds. It is very similar to that of the atomic inversion, but the size of oscillation and the time scales are fundamentally different. The "revival" time of the oscillation, for instance, is found to be exactly one half of the so-called "fractional revival" time of the atomic inversion. Our current interest is directed to the radiative behavior of the driven JCM in a more general situation where dissipation as well as detuning is introduced.

Dressed states and exact dynamics of intensity-dependent two-mode two-photon Jaynes-Cummings models

Anna Napoli, ANTONINO MESSINA

We study the two-photon interaction of a two-level atom with a quantized bimodal field of a loss-free cavity. We assume that both the coupling strength and the atom-field detuning may depend on the populations of the two modes. We show that this general nonlinear model is exactly solvable in terms of a dressing unitary operator. Exact expressions for the eigenstates as well as for the Rabi frequencies of the coupled system are given as explicit functions of the nonlinearity terms present in the model. Exploiting the flexibility of these results, we investigate the atomic inversion supposing that at t=0 one mode is coherent, the other is in a Fock state and the atom is excited. We compare the dynamical behaviour of various particular nonlinear models. A common feature is the presence of collapses and revivals of the Rabi oscillations. We find that the atomic inversion manifests exact periodicity when only one specific type of intensity-dependent term (coupling strength or detuning) is present. Such behaviour is physically interpreted in the framework of the dressed atom representation. The simulataneous presence of both nonlinear contributions in the model breaks such regular behaviour in the long-time atomic evolution, in which case competition effects occur which qualitatively modify the quantum dynamics of the system. Other quantum manifestations are brought to light. Their relevance, in connection with the possibility of preparing a cavity mode in an arbitrary Fock state, is briefly discussed.
