Abstract

We analyze, from a quantum information theory perspective, the possibility of realizing an SU(4) entangled Kondo regime in semiconductor double quantum dot devices. We focus our analysis on the ground-state properties and consider the general experimental situation where the coupling parameters of the two quantum dots differ. We model each quantum dot with an Anderson-type Hamiltonian including an interdot Coulomb repulsion and tunnel couplings for each quantum dot to independent fermionic baths. We find that the spin and pseudospin entanglements can be made equal, and the SU(4) symmetry recovered, if the gate voltages are chosen in such a way that the average charge occupancies of the two quantum dots are equal, and the double occupancy on the double quantum dot is suppressed. We present density matrix renormalization group numerical results for the spin and pseudospin entanglement entropies, and analytical results for a simplified model that captures the main physics of the problem.

Quantum Phase Transition in Capacitively Coupled Double Quantum Dots

Martin R. Galpin, David E. Logan, H. R. Krishnamurthy

We investigate two equivalent, capacitively coupled semiconducting quantum dots, each coupled to its own lead, in a regime where there are two electrons on the double dot. With increasing interdot coupling, a rich range of behavior is uncovered: first a crossover from spin- to charge-Kondo physics, via an intermediate SU(4) state with entangled spin and charge degrees of freedom, followed by a quantum phase transition of Kosterlitz-Thouless type to a non-Fermi-liquid "charge-ordered" phase with finite residual entropy and anomalous transport properties. Physical arguments and numerical renormalization group methods are employed to obtain a detailed understanding of the problem.

Out-of-Equilibrium Kondo Effect in Double Quantum Dots

Ramón Aguado, David C. Langreth

The out-of-equilibrium transport properties of a double quantum dot system in the Kondo regime are studied theoretically by means of a two-impurity Anderson Hamiltonian with interimpurity hopping. The Hamiltonian is solved by means of a nonequilibrium generalization of the slave-boson mean-field theory. It is demonstrated that measurements of the differential conductance dI/dV, for appropriate values of voltages and tunneling couplings, can give a direct observation of the coherent superposition between the many-body Kondo states of each dot. For large voltages and arbitrarily large interdot tunneling, there is a critical voltage above which the physical behavior of the system again resembles that of two decoupled quantum dots.

EVOLUTION AND DESTRUCTION OF THE KONDO EFFECT IN A CAPACITIVELY COUPLED DOUBLE DOT SYSTEM

David E. Logan, Martin R. Galpin

We consider the simplest example of a double quantum dot system: two equivalent, capacitively coupled single-level dots, each coupled to its own lead. Focussing on a regime of two electrons on the double dot, a rich range of behaviour is found on increasing the interdot coupling: first a crossover from spin- to charge-Kondo physics, via an intermediate SU(4) state with entangled spin and charge degrees of freedom; followed by a quantum phase transition of Kosterlitz-Thouless type to a non-Fermi liquid 'charge-ordered' phase with finite residual entropy and anomalous transport properties. The numerical renormalization group method, coupled with simple physical arguments, is employed to obtain a detailed understanding of the problem.

Renormalization group study of capacitively coupled double quantum dots

Martin R. Galpin, David E. Logan, Krishnamurthy, HR

Abstract. The numerical renormalization group is employed to study a double quantum (DQD) dot system consisting of two equivalent single-level dots, each coupled to its own lead and with a mutual capacitive coupling embodied in an interdot interaction U ′, in addition to the intradot Coulomb interaction U. We focus on the regime with two electrons on the DQD, and the evolution of the system on increasing U ′/U. The spin-Kondo effect arising for U ′ = 0 (SU(2) × SU(2)) is found to persist robustly with increasing U ′/U, before a rapid but continuous crossover to (a) the SU(4) point U ′ = U where charge and spin degrees of freedom are entangled and the Kondo scale strongly enhanced; and then (b) a charge-Kondo state, in which a charge-pseudospin is quenched on coupling to the leads/conduction channels. A quantum phase transition of Kosterlitz-Thouless type then occurs from this Fermi liquid, strong coupling (SC) phase, to a broken symmetry, non-Fermi liquid charge ordered (CO) phase at a critical U ′ c. Our emphasis in this paper is on the structure, stability and flows between the underlying RG fixed points, on the overall phase diagram in the (U, U ′)-plane and evolution of the characteristic low-energy Kondo scale inherent to the SC phase; and on static physical properties such as spin- and charge-susceptibilities (staggered and uniform), including universality and scaling behaviour in the strongly correlated regime. Some exact results for associated Wilson ratios are also obtained.

Kondo effect and continuous quantum phase transitions in double quantum dots with on-site and interdot repulsion and magnetic field

Wei-zhong Wang

By means of the numerical renormalization group method, I study the Kondo effect and quantum phase transitions in a double quantum dot system with on-site repulsion $U$, interdot repulsion $V,$ and magnetic field $B$. At zero temperature and $B=0$, there is a local spin triplet-singlet transition of the Kosterlitz-Thouless type when $V$ increases to a critical value ${V}_{c}\ensuremath{\approx}U$. With increasing $B$, a singlet-triplet transition of the second order occurs at a critical magnetic field ${B}_{c}\ensuremath{\approx}V\ensuremath{-}U$. The magnetic susceptibility and the first derivatives of the spin correlation and double occupation are expected to diverge at ${B}_{c}$ and to have different critical exponents, which are universal for different parameters. An appropriate magnetic field can restore the Kondo effect.

By means of the numerical renormalization group method, I study the Kondo effect and quantum phase transitions in a double quantum dot system with on-site repulsion UUU, interdot repulsion V,V,V, and magnetic field BBB. At zero temperature and B=0B=0B=0, there is a local spin triplet-singlet transition of the Kosterlitz-Thouless type when VVV increases to a critical value ${V}_{c}\ensuremath{\approx}U$. With increasing BBB, a singlet-triplet transition of the second order occurs at a critical magnetic field ${B}_{c}\ensuremath{\approx}V\ensuremath{-}U$.
